I got banned from Mastodon for posting my very first post, which makes no sense. There is no free speech there. Good luck, developers.

Im sure you have been corrected earlier but mastadon is a federated service. Each one has its own rules and moderators totally independent. You can start one just for yourself and your friends, and you can all use the tweetbot client app (well, ivory). Then you can ban yourself and post about it here.

I don’t think Elon has to worry.

Mastodon is a hugbox just like Truth Social or Parler. I’m aware of the “oh it’s federated and totally unique!” argument, but in practice it’s just for people to create their own little ideological ghettos where nothing that challenges them is allowed.
Yeah because having 150 mil people in one room all screaming at each other is better...

Mastodon is great for tech circles. It just hasn't had much uptake in media or political circles. It is a good place to follow various creators.

I'm a big fan of Mastodon's moderation policy. Every community gets to set their own moderation rules.

Ice Cubes is another great Mastodon client. There are some bugs, but it is great for a 1 week old client. The iPad version works decent on Mac.

I may be interested in subscribing to Ivory when the Mac version is released.
yet do we all NEED yet another 'space' to follow developers on?

IG, FaceBook, Patreon, Twitter, Youtube, etc etc. It's getting a bit much is it not?

Very happy with Ivory. It immediately feels like Tweetbot. I first was a bit ‘meh’ about Mastodon, but Ivory makes it feel a very big leap forward. So I decided to pay the 18 EUR a year. The guys deserve it.
Therein lies the ISSUE I've had with Tweetbot.
IF you upgraded iOS, and even restored from iCloud seemed that you had to repurchase an updated Tweetbot client that you previously paid for less than a year earlier. I noticed this years ago and said nope.

almost like developers need to make a living in order to continue iterating on the apps they make for one of the most popular phones on the market
Do developers REALLY need to be paid more than they're already getting (typically $100K US)? That said with huge layoffs from Amazon, Microsoft yet to spin up yet again after November '22's layoff round maybe they do need a few cups of coffee while working remote on a Caribbean beach /s

lol kinda sounds like those in office in any scale in any room. At least the voices get to be spoken even if what is said may not be desirable at you least you know whom is saying what and THAT it has been said. Silence can be just as deadly a pen not used on paper as a sword used on a battlefield.

Edit: or better put 'The devil you know vs The devil you don't'
aka The greatest trick the devil ever played was making people think he never existed.

Open-plan office seems to be common in the US.
Well, no thanks, I’m not a cow, I need and want my space and privacy.

This is popular though. People don’t want to hear someone else’s opinion. They just want to have their own opinion confirmed. It’s human nature and not related to any political or social group.

I haven’t messed with mastodon because it just seems like more trouble than it’s worth. I don’t really go on Twitter that much other than just to follow a few Apple people.

There was something about Tweetbot that I never liked, but what was it? Something about the UI or how they handled tweets... hmmm.

I've signed up with Mastodon, and it's just as confusing to me as Twitter was in the beginning. Once I get the grasp of it, I'm sure it will be great. But I don't see companies jumping on board with it like they have with Twitter. I use Twitter to engage with companies, and less to socialize.

Well, if you have a more weighted interest like e.g Gamedev, Sports, etc. you can join a server focused on that topic, but this doesn’t mean you can’t follow other topics and users from other servers.

Generic important news should be read from different sources anyway, and not just from the sites offered by Twitter & Co. Anybody doing it differently is prone to live in a bubble.

lol, indie third-party app devs are not devs working for a Big Tech company. they’re on their own unless they have another product generating a ton of revenue (like Epic licensing one of the most-used game engines and running a massive online video game, and yet they’ve ironically become the symbol of b*tching about the 70/30 cut). otherwise, the revenue from the app they make is what they’re living on—plain and simple.

What makes Ivory so much better than something like Ice Cubes? It’s another subscription vs free (or tip the guy if you’re nice). I’m thinking there’s a little hero worship going on here just because it’s tapbots. I tried both, and don’t see a lot of difference for the money.

I haven’t participated in the MR forums for years and I don’t remember it being as openly hostile as it is now. Not everyone, of course.
It went darker here a few years ago. This is why every other post has a political warning and only lets people with more than 100 posts comment... Luckily there still enough helpful people to make it worth while.

crazy, almost like developers should build a finished product and sell other versions of said product letting the user decide if it’s worth upgrading.

You know like how it’s always been done in the past.

There is nothing “ongoing” this isn’t like Dropbox or a streaming platform. It’s an app with an api to the service. If there are worthy updates I’d pay. But subscription for a tweet app? Get out of here.
1) are you one of those people who thinks this was whipped up in a few days after their Twitter app got banned?

2) do you have any idea the amount of work that actually goes into developing an app that isn’t utter s—t?

Developers are only making $100k?! Heck yes they need to make more than $100k/year. That’s not a lot of money these days.
