Doesn’t everyone have to be verified on Facebook? Do they charge for that?
They don't verify on FB unless they suspect there is a problem or you need an ad account (even then you can put in whatever credit card you want to whatever name you want).

FB absolutely has a bot problem too...just not as bad as Twitter.

Yeah, power to the people. Sure.

The Truth: he's trying to figure out how to pay $11B in debt, held mostly the Saudi’s, with a company that’s been unprofitable for the last 8 of 10 years.

These billionaires pretending they care about us or any social good is pathetic. (With the notable exception of—and I cannot believe I am typing this—Bill Gates)
Bill Gates the V-pusher doesn’t give an F about us. What an insane comment.

Buy paying you are using your real identity. That real name should be your Twitter name.
There's been zero confirmation that's the case at this time and MANY won't want that.

Fake credit cards and stolen ones make it simple enough to fake an identity. Heck, buy a $8 Visa gift card, register it with any name you like, then use it to pay for your Twitter Blue membership and you've got a card name that matches any name you'd like to register.

That’s how it currently works. Doesn’t mean how it will work in the future. You have to prove identity as well as use your name in your Twitter handle if verified.

I really dislike Twitter. Such a disorganized mess, free or otherwise. As someone said above, it is handy sometimes to use direct messaging to contact a support staff. But good luck getting someone to reply to a message about a tech issue that isn't a direct message.

The whole point of the checkmark is so people know they’re talking with the real person…what’s the checkmark for if literally anyone can have it now?
They probably still make you prove you're who you say you are.

half as many ads? I would never subscribe to this if it meant seeing ads at all.

I have yet to see where he's saying ('ANYONE') can get the blue check. Maybe there's still going to be a "verification" process where you actually gotta have a little social cred to actually get it ... but if you do ... then you're also paying for it. So I don't know, sounds like everyone's getting hot and bothered before any real details are out there....

Remember Elon's intention to have twitter become a "digital town square". Verifying every member is a no brainer to accomplish this. It solves so many issues. The problem is how to incentivize people to get verified, and how to make money. Charging a steep fixed monthly fee just to have the check does not seem viable to me. I wonder if they could charge based on a scale of how many followers you have, and allow variable amounts of included promotional services as part of the deal. That way the average Joe may only have to pay $1 or something, while the top accounts might pay $100 a month but receive some free advertising built-in.
I think the problem for me, is that I don't want a town square. Half the internet is a fire pit of trolls. I'd rather avoid the trump rally online.

It doesn’t defeat it all. Should only “special people” be able to get passports or driver licenses?
The point of a verified user are for known public figures, and was implemented because people like Kayne (lol) complained and Tony La Russa sued due to impersonators on Twitter.

Now anyone can have a blue check that appeals to some form of authority because they paid for it, and they can probably impersonate or claim to be a news figure and spread some BS that will leach on to a bunch of people with no media literacy.

So...defeats the purpose.

That’s the entire purpose of being verified currently. You have to prove you are you, and your handle needs to correctly identify you by name.
If a user with a famous name has a blue check mark we can assume that it is them. The purpose of the blue check mark now will be to push non-bot accounts above bot and throwaway accounts in the conversation. And additional perks, of course. And for Twitter it will help drive revenue, which obviously needs to happen for the sake of company sustainability, given the fact that Twitter current isn’t making much, and probably losing money.

LULz, Elon will never require that. That'd absolutely kill the platform.

Do you really think those that look to spread misinformation want to use their real identity? Of course not. And Elon doesn't want to turn them away. He wants that. It's why he's reinstating many that have been previously banned. Heck, they un-banned a convicted child molester as part of one of the first moves Elon made Day 1.

Just a thought... Maybe so that you know you're talking to the real person regardless of whether it's a celebrity or not.

This is could be a good move given the huge amount of bot traffic that is supposedly on the site. OfferUp has a similar type of verification to try and limit getting scammed.
