This is probably one of the DUMBEST things I have seen from Elon, The whole point of the check marks is that is validated the identity of that person. You hear from Youtubers all the time how their viewers are being scammed by fake accounts, so now all a scammer has to do is just pay $8 a month and create a fake account and people are going to by it because it has the check mark!

Edit: To the 2 that disagreed with me, how do you feel now? 3 Major companies have already fell victim of this which caused their stocks to crash and Twitter to disable Blue for the time being.

The disinformation in the comments here is off the charts. There will be an additional verification system for public figures.

Get used to it. I figure sooner or later all the “free” services will be asking for a subscription of some kind. Facebook, Instagram, the TickToks, Google. The era of the “free” service is quickly coming to an end.
If Zuck ever decides to charge for FB and Insta, I’ll actually delete my accounts instead of just saying that I’ll do it whenever FB screwed up in the past. I just hope there’s a free alternative available by that time that millions have signed up to, maybe BlueSky or something else. Maybe Dorsey’s ultimate plans are to make BlueSky more than a Twitter alternative?

The whole point of the checkmark is so people know they’re talking with the real person…what’s the checkmark for if literally anyone can have it now?
It covers the cost of verifying the person...If you want a blue checkmark you need to verify who you are to twitter. For example, you'll need to show ID. This should help to get rid of bots.

I was kinda interested to see where he might take the company but selling blue checks to anyone with $8/month to spend being one of his first acts is incredibly stupid. I thought the whole point was to verify someone's identity, hence the name.
This was a thing for quite some time before Elon even took ownership.

Has everyone not realised that just because anyone can buy a blue checkmark doesn’t mean they don’t have to jump through all the verification hoops?

It’s effectively what he talked about proving your identity with your ID to use twitter.

So stupid. Verification means nothing if you can just buy in. But idiots will pay it to feel special.

So now, that Russian account spamming disinformation can get "verified", while the legitimate well-known business has to pay for the same. Really makes verification meaningless. While previously, it let you know you were following the real account, rather than a fake, now it'll mean nothing more than the faker paid $8.
Prove you’re not Russian.

Never used Twitter in the past and do not plan to in the future. I will do everything I can to keep any of this Bovine by Product off any of my electronics and those of my family.

Much ado about nothing. Hope it fails and drags the "boss" down too. He has gotten too big for his britches.

I think the problem for me, is that I don't want a town square. Half the internet is a fire pit of trolls. I'd rather avoid the trump rally online.
I see your point, but the internet is full of trolls mainly because of anonymity and abstraction, not because it's reflective of real life. Trump rallies aren't as big as he would want you to believe. Verification completely tears down the wall of anonymity, and inverts the issue of abstraction, especially in today's age of "cancel culture" or whatever you want to call it. In other words, people stop spewing ideas that they themselves don't even fully espouse, and instead learn to filter what they say through the lens of their own future personal reputation (because if they don't, others will do it for them).

Fabulous. Power to the people. The hint he gives that blue check counts will be heavily weighted in the search / trend results so bot/troll farms will have to spend big to influence. These farms will also have a lot more arduous issues creating new blue tick accounts as the previous payment methods will be blocked.

Yeah, power to the people. Sure.

The Truth: he's trying to figure out how to pay $11B in debt, held mostly the Saudi’s, with a company that’s been unprofitable for the last 8 of 10 years.

These billionaires pretending they care about us or any social good is pathetic. (With the notable exception of—and I cannot believe I am typing this—Bill Gates)
Bill Gates always been about good causes. It’s only those “certain people” that hate him for whatever crazy conspiracy theories they have in their head

Ya’ll acting like getting verified wasn’t a sacred cow, or like your politics had nothing to do with it. I’m really enjoying all this reee.

I thought you could just make a twitter handle like Tim.Cook. And then pay for it and just like that u are verified Tim Cook
No, that seems highly unlikely. One assumes ID will need to be uploaded.

Twitter should have done this 10 years ago, but the last regime cared more about pushing left-wing politics than making money. It still amazes me that Musk paid almost $50 billion for a platform that is still in the red after 10+ years of existence.

So anyone can just pay and get verified? Kind of defeats the purpose of VERIFIED, no? Like I’d like to see news handles being verified to check a source but if anyone can just be verified?

Having a blue checkmark gave you zero ability to know if a source was legit or not.

I mean... The WASHINGTON POST has a blue checkmark.

Right. How many blue checkmarks insisted the Covid jabs stopped transmission? Almost all of them?

But having a blue checkmark meant never apologizing. They'd just move on to the next lie, with Twitter's protection.

He transferred engineers from Tesla (a publicly held company) to his private company. That is, he asked Tesla engineers to mow the lawn at his house. His lawyers should be working overtime to make this legal.

You know Elon wanted $20 and someone at Twitter had to convince him that $8 is the maximum that wouldn't make him look super greedy. It's still a +60% increase amidst a global recession.

What do you mean? Non celebrities, all of us, are real people too. As long you can verify and use your official name and title, there shouldn’t be confusion who is who.
