You know Elon wanted $20 and someone at Twitter had to convince him that $8 is the maximum that wouldn't make him look super greedy. It's still a +60% increase amidst a global recession.
Or the $20 leak was fake in the first place. Elon doesn't seem like the type of person who would be easily convinced of something that easily and that fast by an underling.

Also possible Elon leaked the $20 so that $8 would sound "cheap" in comparison.

The whole point of the checkmark is so people know they’re talking with the real person…what’s the checkmark for if literally anyone can have it now?

Are...they not...also people? I think the real point is that the verification system has to work basically perfectly for this to be effective. Otherwise bot prices just rise with inflation and it's business as usual.

Everyone should delete their Twitter account. It sounds like if you do decide to keep it you are going to emptying your wallets.
I tried going back after a 5 year hiatus and I just couldn’t get into it. The same exact people were there saying the same things they did 5+ years ago.

You’re either there for the RTs while spewing word vomit, complaining to companies/services, a political war, or you’re so into famous people you have to follow them on every platform.

Just my $0.02. Don’t find it appealing.

I'd say it's highly likely. It's definitely the kind of thing he does.

If you follow specific, professional and the right personal accounts it can be extremely educational. Just like YouTube.

A lot more political than YouTube, but also more timely. I get why people can like it, it can be useful, it's just used mostly for people yelling extreme things at each other.

But there is also real time information from informed sources. Just sad that Twitter became the de facto place for announcements.

Like so many things on the internet it fell backwards into success by being just good enough at the right time and now we're stuck with it. Like email, but worse.

I'd follow you on Twitter any day, blue checkmark or not.

That’s what I said. Simply paying for it doesn’t make sense if that’s the only hurdle for “verification”.

I am sure Twitter is doing more work than just automating the process behind the scenes to dish out checks because I've seen well known people not get their check for a long time.

What do you mean? Non celebrities, all of us, are real people too. As long you can verify and use your official name and title, there shouldn’t be confusion who is who.

Simply paying for the service should not guarantee a blue check is my point. And no, I don’t think regular people need a check at all.

There's no quality on twitter today, it's a rabbit hole.
Most people that I followed, have left the place including myself.
I check it off less often, as time goes.

The winners are those who sold Twitter to this dumb-a-s-s.

i might pay for that.
honestly people who shout opinions all day but can't afford $8, i would rather not see their replies, bots, schoolkids, unemployed or underemployed, etc.

i would first like a way to keep my feed private so people don't go digging through things i thought 13 years ago without making my account fully private that hides new tweets, replies, etc.

Sounds like a positive change that would add some value for those who are interested in that type of thing. Based on the statement "would offer subscribers a blue checkmark for verification purposes," it'll be a vast improvement over the rather opaque system that was in place where people had to be "notable" (by what standard?) but people would gain or lose verification in a seemingly arbitrary fashion.

Seems like this will make the verification system more reliable and have a transparent, published process and standards, which is a major improvement.

Read today that apparently multi-millionaire Stephen King is very upset with the price increase...
Bill Gates always been about good causes. It’s only those “certain people” that hate him for whatever crazy conspiracy theories they have in their head

Agreed. My disbelief was more around he was such a villain as a CEO, as was Microsoft, back in the day. The Apple community never forgets.

But he has earned every bit of accolaids since then. As Steve himself said, Bill’s not trying to be the richest guy in the graveyard and is doing something with his wealth.

He thought Twitter should pay him and I agree. Celebrity involvement with Twitter benefits Twitter far more than the other way around.
"Celebrities" make more than enough money for offering very little to the world, entertainment, so wonderful. Twitter helps promote most of these people/entities, it's been free publicity thanks to retweets of the useful idiots we call humans.
I was hoping when Elon bought it, he would gut the platform and integrate it into his Tesla, Starlink, and other offering networks, maybe later on he will. I do not own any of his products, but I think it would be hilarious to watch the meltdowns play out on national tv. The media is doing their usual spin treatment to find more and more ways of painting him as the next great evil, and it is definitely showing here. Who will be able to take the mantle from him?
