Why would you verify a fake name like you are the real @boingaboon, okay...

Always use your real name to deliver or say anything of value.
In some countries and in some jobs there may be good reason to want to stay anonymous, while taking advantage of the additional features. Blue check would also prove to others you are a human. Yeah, certain bad actors will game them system but when reported enough times that credit card could get banned. There is no perfect system. Twitter personally isn’t important enough to me, regarding what I tweet, to warrant paying $96. So I will likely not pay the $8 per month and will treat the service more so for reading what the few accounts I follow have to say. YMMV.

Musk is proving that the old quote of: “It’s Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt” is becoming more applicable to himself than ever before.
Are you really suggesting that Elon Musk is a fool? I am not even pro Elon Musk, nor do I worship him the way many people do, but calling him a fool? Nah mate. He aint no fool. Maybe he likes you to think he is a fool... But he has a lot of credentials and a ton of successes that disprove any notion of him being anywhere close to what a fool is...

The whole point of the checkmark is so people know they’re talking with the real person…what’s the checkmark for if literally anyone can have it now?
This. Elon is really a dummy or a genius cuz he wants to tank twitter

Yeah, power to the people. Sure.

The Truth: he's trying to figure out how to pay $11B in debt, held mostly the Saudi’s, with a company that’s been unprofitable for the last 8 of 10 years.

These billionaires pretending they care about us or any social good is pathetic. (With the notable exception of—and I cannot believe I am typing this—Bill Gates)
Bill Gates is not an exception. He’s doing what he always did, but is now working to make his public image shiny.

You’re not pro Musk but you’re pro-“wealth = credentials & sensibility”.

I remember many years ago when Elon Musk negotiated his Tesla stock options plan. Back then he had very high goals for the stock and it was quite clear that he would probably the richest man on earth if he reached those goals and got all those options in return. That was quite a bold bet, but now we are here. He will soon get his last tranch of Tesla stock options which alone are worth about $23 billion at the current price and he really managed to become the richest man on earth. He also managed to cut the costs of rocket launches to a fraction of the costs of the Nasa era. He managed to get high speed internet on cruise ships and on planes that fly 900 kilometres per hour. And finally with the Twitter deal he might swing the next presidential election in the US. So he proved several times that he can get things done. If his ideas for Twitter will not work, he will just change them again until they work.

By paying you are using your real identity. That real name should be your Twitter name.
Yeah this would be an acceptable solution. Auto-verify locks your display name to "Firstname Lastname" from payment/identification method, and keep the old verification process for anything where the display name is anything else.

So stupid. Verification means nothing if you can just buy in. But idiots will pay it to feel special.

So now, that Russian account spamming disinformation can get "verified", while the legitimate well-known business has to pay for the same. Really makes verification meaningless. While previously, it let you know you were following the real account, rather than a fake, now it'll mean nothing more than the faker paid $8.
At least he tried to increase the barrier. You have to pay if you want your fake account looks real. Perhaps, next step, some limitation may be applied to non-verified accounts such as max tweet per day etc.

Will not surprise me one bit if they insert ads in the API stream. Right now at least 1/3 of Twitter users use a 3rd party app and by doing that and not having ads in the API stream, they're losing big revenue. You can nearly bet Musk will change that and they'll add them to the API stream.
That would actually save me money then. I pay a yearly subscription for Tweetbot, and if Twitter forces ads there, I'll just delete my account and not need that subscription anymore.

That's not increasing the barrier. Previously fake accounts didn't have any option to get verified. This opens it up for them to do so.

The Peasants (including scammers, spammers, and impersonators) will have the blue check mark by paying for it. Celebrities will have a gold check mark in Twitter Gold... (+$100 / month of course). Then Elon Loyalists will get a Silver tick whilst his enemies will be banished to the far off barren waste land of Trump Social (and no check mark)

$8 is emptying the wallets of high profie people who need to be verified?
Well yeah. I mean after paying for Netflix and Hulu, guys like Stephen Kimg just don’t have a dime left to spare.

Easy to get a prepaid debit card registered to a fake name and address. Use this to create a verified account. Simples.

They can ask for credit card only, additionally force the user to link a personal bank account and consent to a full credit check.

Most places that require identity verifications will only accept credit cards, such as carrier post-paid phone plan sign up.

Maybe I am just out of the fold on this, but I can't imagine paying money to a social media company for check mark, considering you are what they sell. Now, you pay for the privilege of being exploited, comical.
