The folks on Twitter that rely on or improve their livelihood through Twitter (influencers, VCs, public figures, power users, etc), aren't going to shy away from $8/month. They're also the folks that produce the most content, and are most engaged. The blue checkmark and 'additional features' will appeal to folks who find these verifications and features useful. If you don't fall into this cohort, you use Twitter for free. It's not a bad business model, and self selects between casual consumers and content producers.

$8 a month for something I don’t care for and I still get ads. How about ditching the feature and give me ad-free for $1 a month.

I’m only using Twitter to keep up on events in Ukraine. Some day the war will be over and I can go back to no Twitter.

It’s like a very rude, hyperactive Usenet.

Because that would be a terrible business model and would make no sense for Twitter. The ad revenue would easily beat $1 a month.

There are third party twitter apps like Tweetbot which don’t show ads. Their annual subscription model works out to less than $1 a month.

Deactivated my Twitter account the day Musk took over. Twitter was already a cesspool and Musk's ownership is only going to make it worse.

I respect the fact you actually left and didn't just say you'd leave like a lot of other people. And you're right, it was a disaster before he took over. IMO only one direction to go now, up.

Judging by who he kept so far on the team, I don't think it will get worse or better.

Apple raising subscription prices was just the start. Imagine netflix, spotify, hulu, and all the rest will now follow suit

King made it clear that it isn’t about the money—by saying it’s not about the money.
He would lose face if he said it’s the money and be labeled stingy so he would never admit it. As mentioned in several previous comments, rich people can be very stingy with their money. It’s also possible he despises Elon Musk so who knows?

People like to demean others as “Elon army members” or say they are “carrying water for Elon”. But how is it any better to “carry water” for celebrities? They don’t care about you either.

I would be absolutely shocked if all non-first party apps aren’t locked out within 30 days. No way he’s going to let any other app control experience, possibly block ads, collect user data he could be collecting, etc. Not a chance in hell.

SMH! this is just sad.

Don't feel sorry for these people, they've been sitting on their hands leading up to this point. There was so much bloat within the company, now they're scrambling to prove their worth because someone is actually looking to make it a profitable company.

Disabling the only quick way to differentiate between legitimate media outlets and fake news bot farms right before the 2024 election cycle?

Absolutely SHOCKING that Trump’s friend would do this 😂
Twitter died yesterday when the Chief Tw•t retweeted a known troll site about Pelosi’s husband’s attack. Took him a couple of hours to delete it. Not to mention the Binance funding.

This is probably one of the DUMBEST things I have seen from Elon, The whole point of the check marks is that is validated the identity of that person. You hear from Youtubers all the time how their viewers are being scammed by fake accounts, so now all a scammer has to do is just pay $8 a month and create a fake account and people are going to by it because it has the check mark!
I think Elon is a few steps ahead of you.

You might forget to verify the accounts, but to think he won’t do it doesn’t say much about your reasoning.
