These billionaires pretending they care about us or any social good is pathetic. (With the notable exception of—and I cannot believe I am typing this—Bill Gates)
I don’t think Bill was really in it for the money - gotta give it to him. He knows he can’t take it with him and is setting an example for all us Fellow billionaires.

The whole point of the checkmark is so people know they’re talking with the real person…what’s the checkmark for if literally anyone can have it now?
It's sounds like this would be better for filtering out bots. Under the current system too many spam/bot accounts have the blue checkmark. Bots proliferate because getting on twitter is cheap, easy, and essentially unlimited. The only consequence of getting caught would just be account deletion. Now creators of bots have to pay a certain amount, which limits the number of accounts that are created. Even if they pay for the checkmarks, all that money would be wasted if twitter detects suspicious activity and purges those accounts.

I have never signed in, used, or any other method for Twitter. I did not like the way it played fast and fancy with personal information, unless you were an acceptable notable. Once Musk cleans house then I’ll see.

While I agree users who have the need to verify their identity online (mostly celebrities or big corporations, excluding government agencies which their accounts should get a more special tick for free to prevent the spread of misinformation) should pay for the blue tick, it should NOT be made that everyone could just pay to get it. It literally destroys the meaning of verification, to identify which account is the REAL one. If it is subscription-based, everyone can be verified and then no one is actually verified.

What ever happened to micro transactions? Why not have every user pay 25 cents a month. This could prove they are not bots and generate revenue.

I saw his tweet saying he was gone if the planned $20 upgrade happened. Still not happy bout the $8?

I never got into twitter. I thought it was kinda cool back in the day when text messages were "the thing" but always preferred to read articles and books over small tidbits of text.

Now? Twitter is a great way to get local news updates, local PD status reports, follow a few people / tv shows I find interesting but about it for me.
Bait and switch tactic, $8 seems rather reasonable after hearing all this $20 talk. Not to me personally but the ones willing to fall for it.

The irony of twitter checkmarks whining about this while simultaneously plugging their substack newsletter is hilarious.

There are third party twitter apps like Tweetbot which don’t show ads. Their annual subscription model works out to less than $1 a month.
I had Tweetbot on Another iPad that is, unfortunately dead. But when the war is over I won't have to worry about it.

Tom

Presumably you'd still be submitting verification with your payment details. We'll see how it looks like when it rolls out.

On what planet do you think Twitter would ever want all of the PII that comes with full on ID verification? That’s an insane cyber risk.

Granted, Elon is a complete tool and likely doesn’t understand this.

I have a bought versions of Tweetbot on my iOS devices, don’t pay anything and have ad-free.
On Mac Tweetdeck is free (in Safari) but still ok and ad-free, even if the app is gone.
That said, I am a VERY light tweeter today.
Not paying for anything Twitter today.

Read today that apparently multi-millionaire Stephen King is very upset with the price increase...
is it a price increase if it was users did for Twitters sake that they are now being bizarrely charged for? to your point money is not an issue for stephen king — have you thought for a moment what he’s actually objecting to?

How it currently works:

One of the three methods used, for individuals specifically (not organizations or brands), to "prove" authenticity is.... ID verification.

This of course is likely to evolve one way or another under the new regime. ¯\(ツ)/¯

Yeah, power to the people. Sure.

The Truth: he's trying to figure out how to pay $11B in debt, held mostly the Saudi’s, with a company that’s been unprofitable for the last 8 of 10 years.

Also, it’s a a company he wanted to buy, then didn’t want to buy, then *had* to buy 😂

So stupid. Verification means nothing if you can just buy in. But idiots will pay it to feel special.

So now, that Russian account spamming disinformation can get "verified", while the legitimate well-known business has to pay for the same. Really makes verification meaningless. While previously, it let you know you were following the real account, rather than a fake, now it'll mean nothing more than the faker paid $8.
Musk is proving that the old quote of: “It’s Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt” is becoming more applicable to himself than ever before.

Everyone keeps spouting this when they haven’t said anything about verification changing!

I won’t be able pay to get a check mark and pretend to be Brad Pitt. I still have to prove who I am.

LOL at all the commenters saying this defeats the purpose of verification.....no it doesn't. That journalist who wants a blue check mark...pays $8/m. Mr John Citizen who wants a blue check mark to tell readers his account actually belongs to him, pays $8/m. Public figures who may share a name with another verified user will have a second tag which will help differentiate them from each other.

For me personally, I don't think it's worth $8/m but I'd be interested to see what else Elon/Twitter will do to verify the average user who don't really need analytics or other perks. A one-off verification fee would be more appealing to me with the ability to filter out users who aren't verified.

I’m no fan of the PR industry, but Musk really needs to **** and hire a PR person. It’s far too easy to misinterpret his intentions, whatever they may be (seriously, who can say for sure).

Do you not understand what "verification" means?

He needs to charge more money so he doesn’t end up with a camels head in his bed from the boys in Quatar.
