I’ll pass. You can’t competently run Twitter with half of its workforce fired.
It's also the sort of thing that is going to reinforce global inequalities. Musk likes to shout that he bought Twitter for the sake of humanity and now he turning into the sort of thing that is only accessible to people with $100 to spend every year on social media. Not necessarily a big deal for folks in developed nations with plenty of disposable income, but the majority of humanity isn't going to be able to afford this.

Musk thinks paying him $8/mo will give power to the people. He keeps using the word verification but there’s zero evidence any type of verification is tied into the $8 subscription. I don’t think @judy3547829 having a checkmark to her name is going to make what she posts any more credible than when she didn’t have the checkmark. Especially when people know the checkmark is tied to a monthly subscription. Of all the people cheering on Musk because he’s sticking it to those nasty blue checks, how many will actually fork over $8/mo to become part of the blue check club? My guess is not many. Of course his tweet has over 5K comments so I guess mission accomplished for Musk.

Because that’s not what it’s about it. He’s pandering to his new fan base who don’t like most of the people (especially in the media) that have blue checks. Hardly any these new fans will subscribe but they’ll get pleasure thinking Musk is sticking it to those nasty blue check elites they hate.

Wrong. Twitter takes your money and you get a blue checkmark implying verification. No ID or verification of any sort whatsoever is checked. Just imagine how well this is going to go...

This has since been confirmed by those getting checkmarks. Spoiler: here‘s how well this is going:

First screenshot isn’t proof, it’s a news ‘source’. Might as well be made up.

Second is a photoshop. Since the service isn’t out yet.

They fooled you easily, didn’t they?

There is zero evidence anything you’re saying is truthful.

The service isn’t out yet. How can you know anything? Lol. We get it, you hate Elon musk.

Sorry if it hurts your feelings that your billionaire idol sucks at business. Without American tax payers propping him up he’d have to go back to getting apartheid money from daddy .

4 year old data. Omega lol. Again. Why are the Elon haters typing more than the Elon lovers? LOL

Haters tend to write more than lovers. It's like how people on Yelp for a business tend to be louder when they complain than giving a positive review.

Nobody gives a rip about being verified. It doesn’t cost anything to use Twitter, it’s still free without the blue check, that again, nobody with a reasonable sized ego cares about.

That does not look too dramatic compared to Volkswagen's debt for example. A few years ago Volkswagen had a total debt of $192 billion and I think it may even have risen since then. It seems to be a part of the business model of large companies. Especially when they are in the phase of fast growth. Amazon did that over a long period. It added debt each year and yet the company got more valuable each year. The same happened with Tesla. If you can create two or three dollars of value with one dollar of debt, that is a good deal.

Some companies even do not want to have any profit at the end of the year, because profit is taxed. They rather invest that money into growth.

It’s always a pleasure to see rational, knowledgable discussion among the rabble here. Thank you.

Ironically, I actually think that fanbase will sign up for a blue check extremely quickly.

Yes, but you're completely ignoring the connotation of being "verified" on Twitter that is done away with after this new system is implemented. That is why I'm saying, it will lose its value.

Being verified had value because it signified you as a person of note. If all it will now do is signify that you're a real human being, that's not even the same thing anymore. The entire complexion of what being "verified" on Twitter really means will change once you can pay for it and it is foolish to pretend that isn't the case.
I'm not ignoring it, I'm openly celebrating it. The blue check as a status symbol needs to die. It was always silly. People with 5,000 followers had blue checks because of the connections they had in the company or because they had the "right" political opinions, while accounts with 200K followers were unverified because they had no connections or had the "wrong" political opinions.

Blue check as status symbol was always gross.

So I saw celebrity Valerie Bertinelli, who was/is verified, change her name to Elon Musk. I guess trying to show that the site will become full of impersonators now? The question I have is in the past could people with blue checkmarks change their name to be anything they wanted? Could Bertinelli have changed her name to Elon Musk two weeks ago? If so, then I’m not sure she’s making the point she thinks she is.
It was always a violation of twitter's terms of service and remains so. Several accounts were permanently suspended from the platform earlier tonight for pulling this stunt.

I work in media industry and I’ve seen my share of Twitter account verifications. Even though verified accounts are perceived usually as “celebrity” accounts many of them are actually just linked to product/brand/service. Verification to many industry representatives is very important since that way they can control media presence of their brand reliably. Having everyone verified would be awesome. However that was not possible with Twitters past workforce (now half of them fired). Verification was manual process of sometimes going back and forth many times with questions and delivering documentation. Sometimes the process was quick and easy and other times not so much. With the new system there will be none of that. You pay your $8 and you can be whoever you claim to be. Just get a pre-paid credit card, VPN with couple of hops, someone’s open WiFi and get ready for some serious mayhem.

Based on the fact that Musk is wreaking the reliability of Twitter he really doesn’t understand the media and how it’s built, maintained and what its value is actually based on.

I'm sorry, but that's hilarious! Twitter, reliable, media, values!
Twitter is a joke, always been. It's as addictive as any drug and the amount of lives forever tainted by it is absolutely ridiculous. I don't care who owns it, it needs to go.

In saying that, I am enjoying the responses from many.

In that case you're celebrating absolutely nothing.

Elon proclaiming "power to the people" and declaring that Twitter will "democratize free speech" while paywalling the ability for that to happen is absolutely laughable. Last I checked, a true democracy didn't involve stratifying the public's voice & opinion by their ability to cough up a monthly payment.

You may not have personally liked the Blue Check being a status symbol, and I'm actually with you on that. But at least it had a negative connotation then that signified something very specific. Now its absolutely & wholly meaningless.

There's also just some crazy irony in you celebrating the toppling of this status-based social evil...all while providing monthly payments to literally the richest man on the planet.

You do you though 👍
