I am also shocked that it only works with a credit card. That is such an outdated form of payment. With a credit card you are charged for purchases you did two months ago. You go to a restaurant today and two month later you have to pay the bill, while the enjoyment of the meal is already long over.

So true. And is Musk really bringing the checkmark to everyone when you have to pay $8/mo to get it? How many of the ‘masses’ who are cheering Musk on (because they think he’s really sticking it to the elites) are even going to pay for this? Does some blue collar worker in Pennsylvania, Ohio or West Virginia really have $8/mo to spend on a Twitter subscription?

Someone said yesterday that Twitter will have a special badge for public figures. So basically we’re back to where we started with people complaining that person X got a special badge but person Y didn’t.

I work in media industry and I’ve seen my share of Twitter account verifications. Even though verified accounts are perceived usually as “celebrity” accounts many of them are actually just linked to product/brand/service. Verification to many industry representatives is very important since that way they can control media presence of their brand reliably. Having everyone verified would be awesome. However that was not possible with Twitters past workforce (now half of them fired). Verification was manual process of sometimes going back and forth many times with questions and delivering documentation. Sometimes the process was quick and easy and other times not so much. With the new system there will be none of that. You pay your $8 and you can be whoever you claim to be. Just get a pre-paid credit card, VPN with couple of hops, someone’s open WiFi and get ready for some serious mayhem.

Based on the fact that Musk is wreaking the reliability of Twitter he really doesn’t understand the media and how it’s built, maintained and what its value is actually based on.
I find it hilarious that Musk stans and those who hate blue checks (but secretly want one) think charging people $8/mo is democratizing journalism or bringing a voice to the masses. Yesterday Musk said he wanted Twitter to be the place with the most accurate information. One, how do you define accurate (especially when in the political realm)? And how in the world does Musk think he’s going to achieve that? He’ll turn Twitter into Wikipedia?

Oh come on. First personal checks were outdated. Then cash was and now credit cards are? That is absolute nonsense. Credit cards still have a purpose in *current year*.

LOL, J/K, I wouldn't give Elon Musty a damn dime.

How does the credit card company or Twitter know that Zaeed Massani is the rightful owner of @MacRumors, @MacRum0rs or @_macrumors?

Paying to verify means nothing.
It isn't a verification process anymore. It is a "I care $8/month about this account" process. The bot owners won't do this on a regular basis. And if they do pay the $8, then get caught and spanked for being a bot and spam, Twitter will keep the $8 and suspend/ban the account. I think it will be hard for them to use the same credit card or Apple ID again and again to make dozens of bots, spam accounts, and misinformation accounts.

Even cash has many advantages compared to credit cards. In Germany we pay monthly bills directly from our bank account. Either you initiate an automated monthly payment or you give the company the permission to charge the payments from your account. Cards are okay, but not cards that charge you for stuff that happened long ago. Of course you could just transfer money to your credit card account, but doing that with monthly payments is even more confusing.

I really wish there were cash machines were you could put your cash in once per month to pay your bills. That would even work anonymously.

PS: I now figured out how to get rid of all the Ukraine and US election stuff on Twitter. I use ublock origin. That may slow down the browser a little, but the whole Explore Tab is just gone. I love that.

You got to be kidding. I put *everything* on credit card, and pay it off every month. The money is already accounted for as soon as you pay the restaurant tab.Sweet rewards. Who cares about when you enjoyed what.

if bots have to pay $8 x 14M accounts, that's ~$112M per month. It still helps the platform.
you need less than 100 bots to change behaviour of millions in a country or stock market or.... crypto.
well, musk has shown the last using only his account lol
dont get me wrong. I am in crypto too!

its astonishing how he quickly he is destroying twitter. very sad.
probably laying the groundwork for his wechat clone app "X".

The irony is that far more advertisers are backing out of Twitter than this $8 could ever possibly hope to recover.
amen to that. if he was a normal person, his money lenders would have come knocking his door already.. lol
maybe he will get invited to a Saudi embassy if twitter falls? 😂

If I pay a restaurant bill after two months, it feels like having to pay for nothing. That is very frustrating. I love to do it the other way around. Pay something even before I enjoy it. Then it feels like I got it for free.

You're playing a mental game with yourself. Sounds like too much work, but if it works for you, keep at it!

I make money, I save money, I spend money. How or when really doesn't make any difference to anyone. A dollar is a dollar is a dollar.

As it applies to Twitter, though. I'm not paying anything, before, during or after Musk. I blocked the domain at the router level (and on my phone) yesterday. I don't want to accidentally go there.

I pay the restaurant bill with my CC the night I go there. Every month I pay the outstanding balance on my CC, not that restaurant bill, all good and very efficient.

I really don't understand your viewpoint, but whatever, we all think differently and that's a good thing. :)

Petulant Ass is solving the problem of unreliable information! Original Twitter was totally unreliable!

Maybe he will start the week out right by driving to Twitter HQ in his CyberTruck, (thru a hyper loop) and then use the software he is using to send us all to Mars to defeat the bots!

Then he can start making phone calls to beg some employees to come back because he did not realize he laid off people some of the people that actually make it run better!

https://www.engadget.com/twitter-reportedly-asks-some-laid-off-workers-to-return-233438794.html

Firstly, he should turn Starlink back on for Ukraine though

https://www.engadget.com/ukraine-starlink-outage-184124365.html

I just hope he has learned his lesson and that all employees at Twitter are safe from his harassment.

Then he should make himself a coffee.

It's going to be a long week.

Stop calling it verification. It's not. It's pay to play. They don't give a s**t who you are, just pay the $8 per month and you can pretend to be anybody and they will go along with the charade.

I thought it would take a year for musk to destroy twitter, he's doing it in weeks.
Yes because if it were verifying, why would you need to keep paying?

Doubling the character count to 280 back in 2017 was arguably useful.
It’s a bit of an artificial constraint now. The original 140 characters comes from Short Messaging’s 160 character limit (in Twitter, 20 characters for a user ID, 140 for the message). Since nobody really tweets via SMS any more, they could have picked whatever character count they wanted.

that 160 character limit on SMS hasn’t been a visible thing for a long time either. It still exists, but your phone sends them as split messages with tags for the recipient’s phone go stitch them back together in the right order.

Even for their star on the "Walk of Fame" on Hollywood Boulevard the stars have to pay. It costs them thousands of dollars, but they all do it, if they get the chance.
