I don’t understand his strategy. With a price increase like this he incentivizes ‘non-verified’ accounts. If you mix that with his desire to allow for ‘more freedom of speech’, you end up with even more @ssholes screaming anonymously. At least with a verified account, you can tie it back to a real person and that should at least dampen some of the racist, violent comments.

I'm quite sure I'm not alone in saying this fee wouldn't have affected me because I'm a nobody, but I've also just recently deleted my personal and business Twitter accounts. It's overrun by bots / angry nut jobs.

I have felt a lot happier without the negativity. It won't be missed.

What a stupid businessman. Doesn't he realize that a lot of the 230 million or so Twitter users would be more apt to pay $4.99 a month than $19.99 a month? This truly shows how out of touch he is. I mean, does it come with Disney+ or do I get extra online storage? 🤣
It’s for verification, not usage. It’s just for the blue tick,
Something that so far is only for celebs and other notoriety.

Now you can PAY for notoriety and of course there’s people out there that are itching to get ‘verified’ next to their INSANE tweets.

I don’t see the value in spending that sort of money on the platform. Better to invest in a grass roots social network rather than this manufactured and re-engineered garbage.

Twitter has always been a garbage platform and it still remains so. The fact that it has become a favorite of the press / media just exemplifies their blatant laziness. (As the platform began as a short message service when text messaging, SMS, was already WELL ESTABLISHED.)

I genuinely hope this is the beginning of the end of Twitter, as we know it. (Though who knows if what rises from the ashes is any better?). LOL

Just like Elon, yep.
I think Steve “was an *******” before he created iPod or iPhone, among other products. So I’m not sure I agree with what I am perceiving as a sarcastic rebuttal. And also he kinda has already with the whole landing rockets thing. Baby steps.

Edit: though seeing your other comment above perhaps you were agreeing lol idk I’m confused.

Oh, I'm full aware of what you get out of this. I was being facetious. But, he'd make more money if he charged less.

You can call him a lot of things, but he is definitely NOT a stupid businessman. His business acumen is unparalleled. Think about how many companies he built from ground up. You don’t become the richest man in the world by being stupid.

I guess celebrities can easily afford it and Twitter verification is mostly about verifying celebrities. The only reason anyone I know uses Twitter is because celebrities they like also use it.

Let's wait and see what the truth is. Twitter staff are clearly not happy with Musk owning the company, there has been so much fake news and claims being leaked. Maybe it is true that he is going to charge $20 for some enhanced service. Whether it is worth it will depend on what you get for $20.

That he is going to fire people if they don't get it live by the 7th? I highly doubt he said that.
He fires people openly at Tesla, so he will run Twitter the same way.

He had staff print out source code to show him what they have done. That's not incompetence but megalomania.

I still fail to understand how/why people (like Elon) still compare Twitter to Facebook. Other than being "social" networks, they're still quite different overall. Twitter doesn't sell any of your personal information (yet), and even if it did, what information would that be? Notes in your bio? Facebook has ALL sorts of personal information, pictures, stats, aggregated data on the things people like.. It's really Night & Day in that regard. I got off Facebook 6 years ago and have stayed off, because I knew the one person in charge wanted to take all of my information and make money off of it.

If Elon's plan is to just charge people $240 a year to say it's really them? Have at it. Maybe he'll add more servers and backend to their infrastructure.

Makes sense to me. Having a working credit card to your name is probably one of the few automatic ways left to determine whether somebody is a real person or not. Note that this is not a fee to use Twitter, it's only to be featured as a verified account. Previously there was simply no way as a regular person to achieve that, now you can at least pay your way in (which arguably is a much fairer solution than having a secret committee of people deciding who gets them).
