Some lobbying company that can waste $1000 on 50 burner accounts that now look "real".
First of all, nobody should have ever considered a blue checkmark to mean anything special considering how many no-names have them. If you still think a blue checkmark means something after you can literally buy one, I have no idea what to tell you.

ME? Oh, I'm well aware of how companies, technology, and the human mind works 😆 But thanks for lumping me in with the masses. Just because you don't know someone's name, that doesn't make them 'no-names'.

And you're right! Nobody should ever consider that checkbox to mean those accounts are real or legit, If only there was some way to prove those folks were real and Verified 🤔 Now go find all those "non tech savvy" folks in your life, and ask them all these same questions. You'll find a much different answer than asking on a Mac Tech Forum 🙄

lol now THAT is an ultimatum.

I am wondering if Steve ever pulled this off… giving them ultimatum and fire engineers for not meeting it.

Twitter engineers have been too lazy to make any changes, and now they are in for a rude awakening!

Engineers don't decide which and when things go into production. That's why you have BA's, PM's and RM's. Not to mention a full blown testing team the code goes through.

I'll believe it when I see it. Just like all those folks who moved to another country in 2016.
As someone who visits quite a lot of countries and has seen the American population explode in a lot of them, I can assure you plenty of them did.

Pretty aggressive move and for sure something many checkmarks will think twice about before paying.

Sounds like he bought it only to wreck it. If true.

I think that's actually a great idea. Have those super-important hot air balloons on twitter pay for their ego.

Maybe make it little cheaper for individuals and mutch more expensive for companies and officials (like politicians)

What a stupid businessman. Doesn't he realize that a lot of the 230 million or so Twitter users would be more apt to pay $4.99 a month than $19.99 a month? This truly shows how out of touch he is. I mean, does it come with Disney+ or do I get extra online storage? 🤣
Either he is anything but stupid or doesn’t give a damn.

Stupid businessman? Who am I going to think knows how to run a business better? The guy who started with nothing (actually in debt) and became the world's wealthiest man. Or some random internet person? Hmm, tough choice here.

He/Twitter will definitely make money off of this. My point in him being a "stupid businessman" is that he'd probably make more money if he charged $4.99 a month as opposed to four times that. Instead of relying on the fringe or elitist for revenue, he could rely on a lot more than those folks for a lot more money. For every verified user ($20) there's at least 50 more standard users that would easily pay $5 a month to get rid of ads and have that verified checkmark.

So, yeah.. He's out of touch AND doesn't give a damn.

He may have done the math and on his calculations decided $20 was the number. And if he’s out of touch then twittter go bye-bye.

put musk and his junky tesla's into obscurity.
Yeah the world's wealthiest man is going to go into obscurity soon. Keep dreaming.

I know he is guilty of thinking wrong on some subjects, but I'm seeing comments like this and others calling him a "stupid businessman". I can't help but laugh at that kind of stuff. You can hate the guy (and likely not even know why), but at least try and be realistic.

I'm not a big twitter user but aren't the people who want/need to be verified not normal users like you and me but celebrities or high profile people? They won't balk at $20

I'm a light twitter user, I have an account, but I don't ever post anything.

I think twitter had an opportunity to be something more then it was, if that makes sense. Now it seems the inmates are running the asylum. Since for me, I don't really use it, the impact is negligible, and I really don't care. I expect twitter to be more and more ludicrous

I do think charging 20 dollars is a novel approach because it only impacts those people who really do care about being verified.
