cult mentality and basically a resume builder.

the quality of tesla software is horrific. i am a hiring director for a FAANG company and i will almost always throw away any tesla resumes. their software is atrocious (not just talking about FSD but the infotainment too).
I wonder why Chris Lattner moved to Tesla from Apple. Guess he must’ve thought the same thing, as he moved to Google 6 months after starting at Tesla.

There are expenses associated with running Twitter; someone has to pay if it's "free" for users. Elon seems to be trying to wean the company off its total dependency on advertising income; in other words, stop allowing the users to be the *only* products. Instead, he's seeking to siphon some money from the individuals and companies who are profiting off of Twitter. It makes perfect sense and is in line with the goals he has announced.

This is a good idea. For some reason having a check mark is seen as important there, and there are way too many people who have one for some unknown reason. Those people are treated as more credible by some due to having one. Now it’ll just show you like to pay a subscription fee.
Do you really think buying an accreditation is more valid than earning one?

I thought the point of verification was to prove a famous person, politician, journalist was who they say they are and not a stan account/imposter; not that what they said carried more weight.
You're right about this. However, over time, it's been morphed (or dumbed down) to the point that seeing the check mark adds some additional weight to whatever they post. It's the site's version of a megaphone; if someone "verified" is saying it, it holds a lot more weight than anyone who says the same thing without it.

I see Elon wants to run Twitter in to the ground! He'll achieve this pretty quickly if he continues how he started.

He sounds real fun to work for!
No way this is the way he communicates with this employees , he might be able to get away with **** attitude when it comes to Tesla's mechanical engineering due to lack of attractive options, but SW engineers ? forget about it , even in todays economy the will EASILY find a new job if they are any good.

Why would that happen? Apple doesn't get 30% of my Amazon Prime subscription.
Because Apple created this ‘reader’ category which exempts certain apps from having to provide IAP. In this case the Twitter app will still function without paying them a subscription so Twitter wouldn’t be required to offer IAP.

Wow! That sounds quite greedy! And within hours of joining the company too! I’m sure it makes economic sense but at least lead with some positive changes?
It's actually not. Verification has become a joke and the process to whom actually gets verified is not consistent. And TONS of bots are verified and scamming people [especially within crypto].

$20 is nothing for this kind of thing. And if a verified person is crying about how expensive $20 then they shouldn't be verified to begin with. How important are you if you can't even afford that? Let's not beat around the bush here.

I see it more as some have turned it into a class thing and Musk knows his new fan base is obsessed with class. So to them this is a way of punishing a class they don’t like. Though I always find it amusing that those who complain most about “blue check twitter” have blue checks themselves.

lol now THAT is an ultimatum.

I am wondering if Steve ever pulled this off… giving them ultimatum and fire engineers for not meeting it.

Twitter engineers have been too lazy to make any changes, and now they are in for a rude awakening!
The most likely result of these kinds of moves is that the best engineers will leave, because they are in demand elsewhere.

The mediocre ones will remain and will try to please the tyrant.

I don't think it's greedy. Most people don't have a blue checkmark. Those who do see value in it. Therefor he's charging for it.

It's no different from Reddit charging for Super Upvotes (or Gold or whatever) and other similar rewards. I don't see a lot of people complaining about Reddit's model. Don't see why people would complain about Twitter doing the same. Other than the fact that Elon Musk is involved and therefor pure evil.

The self-proclaimed "best engineers" who will "leave" are the ones leaking this crap to the media anyway. They are throwing hissy fits because the "tyrant" is their boss now. They were told he is a bad man, they just aren't sure why. Just like most people who dislike Elon.

Yeah creating a new revenue stream in place of one that was generating $0 before leads to that. Brilliant business advice as usual from the internet. I’ll trust the self made billionaire over armchair businessmen any day to make wise business decisions.
It's only a revenue stream if people buy it. Raising the price to become some fake "verified" user 4X the previous fee may not be as desirable to as many people. Considering the change of ownership and the fact that many are just flat out leaving Twitter, spending $20 doesn't sound like a great deal to me.

Twitter is a business, not a charity.

Google has been loosing money on Youtube for years also, so they will start locking features behind paid tiers too.
Nonsense.

Youtube USED TO lose money.

In 2015 when Youtube had revenues of $4 billion, it was estimated that Youtube was more or less break-even.

By 2021, Youtube's revenues had grown to $28.8 billion.

In other words, these days YouTube is likely to be WILDLY profitable, and probably has been for several years.

Top developers have choices of where to work. It’s a little harder to find a job than it was, but this is a decent way of getting your best performers to leave as soon as they can.

Edit: At the current rate of Twitter’s cash flow, though, there might not be much choice. Maybe it’s better to earn some ill will go than tank the company.

Inflation 😜😜

Kind of a silly strategy. I think they would get more money over time by improving the process so lots more people get verified, then do what Disney and Netflix do, raise prices by a dollar each year. Rake it in 🤑🤑🤑

And what about public entities? The fact that elected officials are now communicating on Twitter is not normal to me, but is the White House going to pay for their blue check now?

I mean I understand it makes sense form Twitter’s point of view, but a state organization paying for a useless service is inappropriate. Why should they pay Twitter and not some other social network?

He redefined what it means to be an *******.
