Ugh. Third party apps getting removed will get me permanently off Twitter. Oh well. I'll survive.

Edit: Why isn't this story on the front page? Whenever Twitter makes a change it's always a full story. Maybe it will show up later.

The (hopefully temporary) breaking of Tweetbot has reminded me how utterly terrible and cluttered the Twitter app is on iOS.

If Tweetbot doesn't come back, I may actually use TweetDeck in a Safari window on my iPhone to scroll Twitter.

Also, my Tweetbot subscription comes up for renewal in three weeks, so they better sort this.

Now that Elon has blocked Tweetbot, I have deleted my twitter account. The official twitter app for iOS is garbage and doesn't let us block the sensationalized fear mongering news headlines on trending topics and search tab. So today, Elon has officially killed twitter for me. Good luck if you choose to still use it. These billionaires are trash and their egos are what kills good things.

I don’t know why macrumors isn’t reporting this story at all? Seems a pretty big deal as a lot of people here are power users and likely to use 3rd party apps.

The iOS Twitter app is garbage, but for me the Twitter macOS app has no adverts or promoted tweets. Is that normal?

MR might be busy writing a story that new headphones will come out in 2024. 🤣

Just had a gander and the bot spam and anti-vax conspiracists are running wild on the trends page. One popular account posted a promotion and soon said they had to lock down until the bot problem goes away. The bots had been activated to get all the promo codes.

Still, I’m not sure what’s worse - Twitter bots or LinkedIn “Top Voice” Grifters who act like they are super knowledgable but a stream of stupid is produced from their accounts every day.

They write about AI but don’t know the difference between Python and NoSQL (not even joking). They write about robots taking everyone’s jobs but don’t understand problems with actuators and hydraulics, maintenance costs and software bugs. Please make these nepo babies go away and do a real job for once 🤣

Elon is just torpedoing his reputation.

On one hand I think he's trying to squeeze some kind of return on his boneheaded decision to buy Twitter. On the other hand, I fear he's just killing Twitter because he doesn't like the direction it was headed, and he just wants to control it.

Why anybody uses the official app instead of something like Hootsuite, Tweetbot, Twitterrific or Fenyx I will never know.
Because those apps you still can't go back like 10-12 hours worth of tweets. Those apps are good but the offical app has certainly advantages which that is.

How is no one covering this? Numerous apps just gone and broken
I think because it happened late in the evening before the beginning of a three day weekend (for some due to MLK Day in the States), maybe Musk is hoping they’ll generate enough stats from turning the API off and then provide an explanation on Tuesday?

At some point, Twitter had an approved API that has documentation and dates of when it was filed and all of that, it’s not like musk can just back out of that, that was a business agreement, not a business decision. The decision made to use third-party apps happened quite a long time ago, and then they made a legal binding agreement in the form of an API, But just turning that off? That’s a business decision, not a business agreement. He may claim that he can just change that at any time, but I would assume then he would be liable for a breach in contract of some type. I don’t think it’s ever came to the point where a monetary value would need to be derived from somethings this irresponsible.

I’m using Twitterrific, but unable to access since January 12, 2023.

Apparently, the mastodon sign up rate during this time has been completely flat, which suggests that users of third party twitter apps are either already on Mastodon (like myself) or simply have no intention of switching platforms (ie: they are back on the stock twitter app).

I personally refuse to download the twitter app. If Tweetbot dies, and I suppose that will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for me, because it was what made Twitter even useable for me to begin with.

Or we're just using the smaller 3rd party apps that are still working until Musk kills them as well...

There is an idea floating around that he's deliberately tanking Twitter, Tesla and the US so that his financiers in China and the Middle East can buy it all up cheap.

Elon touting transparency will really fall on deaf ears after this trick...

Transparency for thee but not for me...

So does Fenix.
Thanks for this. Fenix seems to be a little better for me than Aviary.

Hmmmfff… I was hoping to use the Fenix macOS app, now that Tweetbot doesn’t work, but it’s not letting me sign in there, either. Weird that one App’s platform works (iOS & iPadOS) but not the other (macOS).

now that Tweetbot doesn’t work
I was just able to get back in with Tweetbot (macOS). It sent me to a twitter.com signin page in Safari, where it asked if I was okay with Tweetbot accessing my Twitter account. I entered my password and it relaunched Tweetbot and all seems well.

Tweetbot on iOS still won't authenticate though.

Heard that Tweetbot just swapped their API key which means it'll be nuked soon. Also explains the errors as the new key isn't authorized for the large # of users the old one was.

Tweetbot iOS is working for me again.

EDIT: although it won’t let me swipe between all my lists like it used to. But it will load the lists one at a time if I manually select them from my profile.
