Cue the sad trombone.
If they’re out by November, one could have almost got a full year of work on the M1 Air if one ordered it on day one, instead of waiting for the second gen machines.
Got my M1 pro on day one 😁 the plan was to upgrade to the 16” Not sure now if I’ll be upgrading to the 16”

Developers don’t seem interested in porting over their iOS/iPadOS apps. 🤷‍♂️

Think I’ll stick with my 13” and see if these iOS/iPadOS M1 apps gain any traction.

Im running a lots of machine learning algorithms on the M1 MacBook Pro using R Studio, and the machine is surprisingly fast, really FAST! You can actually run LOOCV algorithms on large datasets locally without making the thing explode (intel MacBooks :) )
Cant wait for something better, maybe a 16-core M2...

For many years now PC manufacturers have been putting Intel chips in smaller laptops than Apple with dedicated graphics that run cooler and at better clock speeds. Apple seemed to just sort of stop caring.

They knew they had their ace up their sleeve. But they . . . are just waiting? Think what PC laptop manufacturers would have done with the M1 when you look at what they've done with Intel chips.

What makes it more confusing is that Apple did try to go to an extreme with the original 12" MacBook with an Intel chip--making a custom miniaturized logic board. Didn't work great. But then when their own chip was finally released which could have probably performed well in a form factor like that, they just put it in these chassis that have been around a good, long while.

Apple seems a bit like the hare from the Tortoise and the Hare that is ahead in the race and thinks it can take a nap.

These are my dream bring backs if Apple does indeed intend to bring back features from prior MacBooks:
  • Light up Apple logo
  • MagSafe
  • Ports
  • Black/Matte black finish option
In terms of new features that we are dying for:
  • 1080p camera? Please? Especially during COVID-19....
  • A near bezel-less display
Other than those, the laptop is nearly perfect now - the keyboard is great, TouchBar seems to be on its way out on the MacBook Pros, so I can't ask for more. The speakers, especially on the 16-inch MacBook Pro are surprisingly great for laptop speakers.

Bringing back the SD card and HDMI are great moves. Going back to MagSafe is not... just stick with the USB-C standard like the rest of the world.

I'm legit really excited for the 14 inch with a beefier second-gen M chip. First time I've ever seriously considered moving over to Apple for my computer needs.

What if Apple doesn't actually change anything and just release the same Intel based 16 inch chassis, just without a Touch Bar and a couple extra ports but with of course faster M processor. Would you be disappointed?
I would celebrate the death of Touch Bar. :D

Get yourself a cheap Bluetooth wireless keyboard until the new beast hit the market. 😁
Oh, I have Bluetooth keyboards - it’s just that since the pandemic I use my laptop on my actual lap, which makes an external keyboard difficult.

(In 2017 the B key started acting up. In 2019 the 4 key. And now the space bar, and it’s the worst of all - randomly adding spaces as I type). The Unshaky app helps somewhat, though I had to crank the settings way up because it’s gotten so bad.

This sounds more like an October / November launch, then. :(
Summer launch/announcement (WWDC?). Perfect for back to school promo for free AirPods.

It would also mark the 1 year anniversary of their announcement of transition to Apple silicon. It's not as if it'd be the 1st time Apple announced new hardware. The last time was in 2019 when they announced the Mac Pro. Prior to that was 2017 for announcement of new iMac, iMac Pro, MBP, and MB

Well poop. My mid 2012 MacPro crapped out on me at the end of 2020 and then today my 2011 17” MacBook Pro did the same. I was wanting to get the Apple silicon 16” MacBook Pro but if at the end of the year, I may not make it that long depending on my diagnosis that I received back in January. How are the 16” Intels? I was looking at one sort of spec’d out around $4k or should I just get the 13” M1?
Or maybe I hold out until WWDC though that would totally leave me without any computer for what, 3 months? Guess I can see about towards the end of March and see what, if anything, is announced? Too much to think about and unfortunately time is not on my side here.

don't get the M1 nor the intel 16". Just wait for 16" 2021 MBP. In the meantime get yourself a mid range AMD laptop.

I know a lot of people are looking forward to an Apple silicon MacBook Pro with more than 16GB of RAM… I think the first round of M1 Macs is just a taste of the power we can expect from high-end Macs soon.
Bet you and most of those people don't need 32gb of Ram. 16gb is plenty for the majority of users. 8Gb of Ram is okay for average users.

Even smallish swiftui compiles in Xcode slow to a crawl with 16gB of RAM - i get a ton of paging even with 32GB on a couple of my apps on my MBP. Video encoding also doesn’t do well with 16gB. Obviously web browsing and office apps are fine.

Disclaimer - I am a totally please-able person.

Ok, now just fix the OS and we're golden.

So basically 2 years between drinks. That sucks we have to wait until Octoberish.
My wife is fanging for my M1 MBA as I told her I'd give it to her when the 16 comes out. She's gonna be a tad disappointed when i tell her the news.
