Fall is a bit long for me - my main mbp was stolen so I’m limping along with a windows computer until a new one comes out. I may have a get a refurb M1 MBA if that is the case. Don’t want to waste money!

My heart is set on the second generation M series iMacs with Face ID. But the question I want to ask those waiting on the 16 inch. What Apple doesn't actually change anything and just release the same Intel based 16 inch chassis, just without a Touch Bar and a couple extra ports but with of course faster M processor. Would you be disappointed?
I would love to see a redesign if they are adding ports and maybe have more internal space because of their SOC. And I would hope to see a camera improvement.

But honestly a cool running mbp with good battery life would make my day. Of course design is important to me and I love updated designs, but my 2019 mbp ran so blasted hot!

I no longer believe it's because want we want... Some is, but Apple seems to know whats best

This year I know I’m buying 4 Apple TV’s, a new MacBook Pro, a new Apple Watch and probably a new iPad Pro and I doubt I’m alone. Get your Apple stock!
This year I wish I could buy a new Apple TV, a new MacBook Pro, a new Mac Mini, a new iPad Pro with the Apple Pen, and a new iPhone with AirPods, but I won't be able to afford them.

So, these machines would probably use chips from TSMC N5P vs N5? Named M2 vs M1x?

I still think Apple has alot of A14/M1/(A14x/M1x?) sized silicon that they haven't shipped yet... A glut?
Logically yes

They don't have stock, they even are short on supply

Mark Gurman posted a short video recently on Twitter about new Apple products for the year and mentioned the M iMacs will arrive late in the year.

I have a 2017 13˝ TouchBar, and it's probably one of my least favourite Macs I've ever bought. I was seriously considering the Dell XPS and Microsoft Surface for a while, and in some ways still regret my decision to stick with Apple for this generation.
  • I have already had the keyboard replaced.
  • The TouchBar is an over-engineered gimmick that wasted huge amounts of resources for very little user benefit.
  • I have dongles. So many dongles. Dongles everywhere. Dongles for HDMI. Dongles to give me legacy USB Type A ports. Dongles to give me Ethernet. Dongles to give me an SD card reader.
  • I've sent the machine skittering across the floor more than once (and kinked a few expensive USB-C cables) after tripping over the cord with no MagSafe.
  • With more and more software relying on GPU acceleration, the Intel integrated graphics are not up to the task. The fans regularly go into overdrive as the hardware tries to keep up with software demands.
  • The quality of the webcam is an embarrassment in an era where we're now relying more and more on video conferencing for remote meetings, learning, and communicating in general.
Almost everything about this generation of MacBook Pro was designed purely by Jony Ive's ego, and his desire for beauty over functionality, with nothing more than "thin and light" in mind, rather than looking at actual user needs and use patterns. They utterly failed their Pro users in their laptop and desktop lines in recent years, and have a lot of catching up to do.

I'm looking forward to the new generation of machines. If they include basic things like HDMI, an SD card reader, and MagSafe, they'll be going a long way toward restoring confidence in the Pro portable line to where it was before.

I'm also looking forward to seeing where they take the new Apple Silicon with these Pro laptops. Hopefully they ramp up the horsepower significantly from the first machines.

Looking forward to this but very much not thrilled about the prospect of adding back legacy ports for no good reason.

Having HDMI and SD on a Pro machine, intended for professional usage, certainly has a very good reason.

As someone else has said in this thread, the only reason to ever remove them in the first place was for aesthetic purposes, Jony Ive pursuing his dream of as thin a laptop as possible.

Is it possible that Apple decided to abandon the M1X SoC and decided to use a newer "Apple Silicon" SoC based on the better A15 SoC from the 2021 iPhones instead?

They have a repair program for these keyboards. I had my keyboard replaced last year under the repair program, and now keep a silicone cover on it. No more problems.

How many times am i supposed to have the same machine repaired, losing it for a week each time, during a pandemic when I am working from home and need my machine?

A repair program doesn’t make up for the fact that these keyboards were garbage. (And dust and crumbs ain’t the problem).

Very surprising... Seems like a bad move to keep the 2019 16” around that long without an update. I was really hoping for WWDC but it looks like that may not happen...

Seems like a strong possibility to me especially with the late 2021 timeframe. However, we still don’t know what naming scheme these Mac chips will use. I think we all assumed that Apple would follow the same naming pattern as the iPhone chips which would give us several M1 variations

M1: For the base models

M1-X: For the higher end laptops and iMac

M1-Pro?: For the new Mac Pro and possibly a high spec iMac

Then next year, we would have an M2 version of the same chips. However, it could also be possible that Apple names these chips differently.

I'm also questioning if this is signaling an M2X in the MBP instead of an M1X, it feels really late to launch an M1X, so I'd love for it to be an M2X.

Bringing back the SD card and HDMI are great moves. Going back to MagSafe is not... just stick with the USB-C standard like the rest of the world.
Maybe you could help me understand the SD card reader. I've seriously only used microSD cards for the past few years and just carry a usb-c dongle for that which includes 6 different SD card types on it.

I'm guessing many professional cameras still use a full SD card, and that's the audience it's for?

Magsafe also seems a bit strange when the runtimes of the M1 chips (I'm using an Air) are very long and I never need to plug in over the course of my day. I've honestly enjoyed having a USB C power adapter so it can charge my iPad and random other things that use it.

The reason why I say this is because unlike the M1, my suggested M2 SoC may have 16 high performance cores, 4 high efficiency cores and 16 GPU cores all using the superior A15 SoC design, which may mean lower power consumption. And unlike the M1, the M2 could access up to 64 GB of Unified Memory Architecture RAM.

No good reason?

Loads of professional cameras still store on SD cards, and transferring the card over to the machine for editing is almost always going to be faster than just about any other connection method.

And HDMI is hardly "legacy". Show me a boardroom or classroom that has a Thunderbolt connection for its projector or wall display, and I'll gladly throw my dongles out the window. I haven't encountered a single one yet.

This is very odd speculation. Might as well ask whether they've abandoned manned flights to Mars in order to focus on developing the AR glasses so that people can just pretend they're on Mars.

same with my MacBook air 2010, then i realize i have spell correct on, which is not good for cartoonists trying to be "cute" on twitter. that always backfires to some misunderstood calamity.

anyways back to the game:
these port features seen very incredible which means apple is listening to thier devoted consumers, or that the M1 chip is having way too many problems working with docks and other power sources and apple is tired of hearing abut them. That would not be fun having to replace a new MacBook air just because some chord or power supply ruined the laptop.

The pre-seed M1x speed tests mentioned online has that referenced used
in:Apple MacBook Pro 14 (2021)
Apple MacBook Pro 16 (2021)
Apple iMac 27 (2021)

With everything going from M1 to some variation of M1X and the discontinuation of the iMac Pro it also makes sense to not necessarily treat a smaller iMac like the previous Intel CPU variations. Whatever entry level models of the above three will likely be a lot more capable as both the CPU/GPU will be Apples. I actually expect these three demoed in July WWDC shipping some time afterwards. I don’t think any iMac will be just a M1. I also expect the pro line with both a modular small pro model and the big workstation to come 2022. :)
By entry-level, I mean there’s rumours of a redesigned 24” iMac with M1.

Wow the whinny butts get their wish. I am perfectly happy with the current system with touch bar and just four (2 is too few) USB-C ports. There is more than enough room for a display-only row about the physical FN keys. So an application could should what each FN key would do in their application.
