When Steve Jobs was alive he would never have gone for this. Apple was a company that paved it's own path no matter what the competition did. Now they just copy samsung? This doesn't seem right. If it is true, Apple will lose some business with me. The samsung phones are too big. The reason I love iPhones is because they are just the right size. Once phones are getting near tablet size, what's the point in a tablet? It just doesn't make sense for Apple to do this because they don't have too. iPhone sales are at high levels right now. Anyway my point is Apple always did there own thing. Copying the competition just doesn't make any sense at this point in the game. They have done so well by innovating not copying.

I hate to break it to you but Samsung didn't invent large smartphones. If anything Apple is catering to demand and not copying the competition. If they were copying the competition then we would have had +4.7" iPhones 2 years ago. Furthermore, there's no definitive rumor that says they'll go away from the 4" model, so your baby phone is still an option until we know any concrete facts. People should be happy that we have more options, It's not all doom & gloom yet.

If they release a larger size, fine, but don't get rid of the phones that actually function as phones. My 5S is about as large as is comfortable to carry in a pocket or hold to one's ear for a prolonged period of time. I personally don't need or want a phone with a larger screen. There's already devices for that (iPad/mini).

Unless... we see the phone outsourced to some other device (?iWatch) that you hold to your ear and talk into. But I don't see that happening. Holding one's wrist to the ear is significantly more uncomfortable than holding a phone to the ear. Try it.

I also wonder if they will increase the screen size without increasing the dimensions of the phone as much, just bring the screen closer to the bevel.

Hopefully it's not too big. Apple used to go on about how they figured out the right size for the average hand for a phone, and I think they were right (also ease of carrying in pockets). I hope under new management they don't just buckle to consumer demand at the expense of "giving us exactly what we wanted, even when it's not what we thought we wanted".

Ease of use one handed again depends on your hand size, when I had a 5inch phone I could still easily use one handed. So if your hand is around the size of the ones apple went with, of course you'll agree with their sizing.

But to people.like me it feels like utter nonsense when someone else with different sized hands to me is telling me my phone is too big, even for me. Might as well try and tell me my.gloves are just too big and are stupid.

Question: When did Apple say this?
Answer: Never.

Apple have not talked about this or even hinted at it. This is just MacRumors staff tech wet dreams in an article. Misleading as MacRumors have zero way to know this outside a NDA.

"people familiar with the situation said"
That is not Apple, just hearsay.

Two New iPhones With Screens Larger Than 4.5" and 5" rumored to be Coming This Year
That is the article title fixed to be not misleading like it currently is.

You're not wrong. We have no idea what Apple is doing.

However, lets keep in mind that 100% accurate and early leaks about iPhone 5 and 5S started popping up between December and February prior to the September release, but were written off and dismissed as click bait by many at the time

I just really wish someone would put out a phone will as little of a bezel as possible, seems like that has fallen to the wayside. A 4.5" phone wouldn't seem all that big anymore if it were actually only 4.5" of nothing but screen and a small space at the top for the speak/notification light/camera.

Apple is severely hampered by having a large physical home button. No way to get a slim form factor like a Moto X while keeping that button.

At the time we didn't know if they were true or just rumours. And the same is the case now. This could be true. It might not be true. We have no concrete way of knowing.

As I pointed out earlier, the WSJ was completely right about the iPhone 5C in january last year. One could think Apple itself planted the rumor last year and maybe this year too.

This is presented as original reporting from the WSJ, not "analyst rumors". It may be proven wrong but can't be put on the same level as those "digitimes" crazy and unreliable rumors.

The WSJ has been frighteningly spot on with their rumors and leaks. We don't know, but we cannot dismiss either.

The biggest complaint from my friends with android phones is that the iPhone's screen is too small.

If these rumors are true, what will they have to moan about?

They absolutely have a point.I personally insist on a bigger than 5" iPhone, else no iPhone more for me.
Now, as for your question, quite a few things. First one being Swype (or a similar keyboard).
Next, much longer battery life (and proper battery management - a battery that won't be depleted randomly at anywhere between 1 and 97% "charge").

Although greater number of users are leaving android to come onboard IOS than vice versa (i think there was a recent study on this trend) but i do think that the growth of IOS can significantly pick up if bigger size (s) is/are available.

Yes at times they have gotten their rumour discussions very spot on. I certainly don't dismiss them. But also I certainly don't take them as fact. I call them highly plausible.

No iWatch this year...no way Apple will release two new different products in one year. It makes no sense for them financially (less sales, resources) nor goes well with their philosophy of quality over quantity. Focusing on two major products at the same time will certainly result in a decrease in quality.

2014 = year of iPhab
2015 = year of iWatch

Hoping they don't make the current one physically bigger (maybe even a tad smaller) and just add a humongous phablet; only difference being a larger battery. That would make everyone happy.

Great point! That I think they will do, I was quite pleased with how the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina are almost identical with two different screens!

Agree. I think apple wants the sales and doesn't care if one product cannibalizes another (iPad mini/air) because as long as their devices are selling they are making $$ so hopefully they will do like the mini and air and have the same specs.

The idea is that they are making a product to sell to everyone, so it shouldn't be tailored to your or my hand-size, but rather made perfectly for any hand size.

But even hand-size aside, putting a huge ass phone in my pocket is uncomfortable. I may have to keep this iPhone 5S for a while if they stop offering a phone sized phone.

For the battery thing: I agree. My girlfriend's iPhone 4S switched it's self off at 50% battery the other day. Hopefully, with a 4.5-5" screen they'll fit a bigger/better battery into the phone.

Also, if you really think a 5" phone is too small for you, why don't you buy an iPad mini? Not trying to hate, just interested to see where you're coming from. :)

WSJ.track record isn't bad but not good either. This is just another follow up rumor to what we've been reading the story is going to change at least 20 times before the iPhone 6 comes out
Hopefully they come out with 2 sizees but keep one size as a phone not a phablet

4.5" is about the perfect size for me. I would definitely be interested in a 4.8/5" iPhone though. Absolutely nothing bigger than that.
