What do you mean it’s about time? Pretty much all cellphones with ToF tech were released in 2019. You make it sound like all other brands have had this tech for the last couple of years... lol
Yeah and by then(the last part of 2020) most of these phones will already be almost 2 years old. So now you can see what he meant.

This is a really silly thing to say on your part. iOS and android both have competing features that might be slightly different from each other, and they might be working a new features for future product development through R&D, bu it doesn’t mean they’re copying each other. The same could be said about any competitor really that has similar technology to Apple, Samsung or LG alike. It’s all competition.
It's something Apple fans say all the time. Go to the latest Pixel 4 article on this site and see it for yourself.
Anyway he was obviously joking about it, don't take it so personalty.

This convoluted saying is so old only baby can appreciate your “cleverness”. As for the iPhone 2019, if there is something worth exciting about, it wouldn’t be boring like this, would it?
There are plenty of iPhone 5s, 6, 6s, and 7 users out there who will find the 2019 models to be attractive.

This is the rumour, repeated in this article, that baffles and concerns me...

Rumors suggest Apple is planning to release three iPhones in 2020, but in new sizes. Apple is said to be working on 5.4 and 6.7-inch high-end iPhones with OLED displays, ... and a lower-cost 6.1-inch model with an OLED display.

I don't upgrade every year but when I do upgrade I go for the top of the range, but also influenced by screen size because the Max is too big for me. I have an Xs at the moment with a 5.8" screen. If these rumours are true then, with the current Max screen of 6.5" already too big for me, I am left with the choice of actually having to drop my screen size from Xs's 5.8" down to this rumoured 5.4" successor or go for the 6.1" lower-cost model. I would almost certainly do the later because reducing my screen size seems such a backward step. Apple would actually be forcing me to buy a cheaper model where normally I would have gone for the more expensive one pretty much regardless of cost. Maybe I'm unusual but if I'm not then if the rumour is true it seems a very strange decision from Apple.

To make it even worse just maybe I would have given it another go and made another attempt to get along with the 6.5" Max size but, again if the rumours are true, Apple is moving that option further out of reach by now needing me to be able to come to terms with a 6.7" size rather than 6.5" if I want to continue using its premium product line.

I do understand that some people would like a smaller phone but if that is viewed as a big enough market segment for Apple to address then I really wish it would do it by introducing an additional smaller screen size using up to date technology (OLED screen, thin bezels, latest A-series SoC, good cameras etc) rather than reducing the size of the Xs successors.

I also love using metric and imperial units in the same sentence. Consistency is for losers. :)
0.82 to 1.64 feet just sounds less tidy than 25 to 50 cm. Now, if somebody can explain to me when to use feet and when yards? To me 5 yards is easier to visualise than 15 feet (I imagine a 'yardstick' and then put five of them in a line).

All these speculation about 2020 iPhones is killing 2019 iPhones. Luckily for Apple 99% of their customers does not visit website/forums like MacRumors, AppleInside, 9to5mac :)

2015 iPhone 6S
2020 iPhone ToF

To update a phone every 5 years seems reasonably environmentally conscious.

Still rocking my SE but any new phone would be a big upgrade. However, it still meets my needs and no need to upgrade. I think this is an example of why people are not upgrading as much. Plus you need to take on the cost factor.

The 2020 rumours sound interesting but if you need a new phone wouldn’t wait any longer than needed.

However, 10 - 20 inches would be very easy to visualize for most Americans ;)

Go spit your toxic waste somewhere else. Is this saying better?
It were my own words. I’m not aware of such saying. I literally was tired reading similar “oh, it’s so boring” again and again. It’s not even “clever”.

It’s a regular upgrade and it gets a third camera and no one knows yet what it’ll do. What do you want from an already great phone? Holographic display in 2019? New form factor every year? What should be exciting? It’s a phone. If someone needs a new toy every year then there are toy stores for that.

Literally all the good features are coming in 2020. What's the point of this year's iPhone? They should just keep selling the XR, XS and XS Max for another year.

They are intended for those who have not upgraded until now and don't wish to wait until next year.

Is now Apple copying android feature ?

It's very typical. Apple is working on creating a great 3D sensing camera and will spend 2+ years developing it to make it work properly and convenient for users. In July 2020, an Android team will see that Apple is coming out with the camera in September 2020, so they'll spend 1 month to create a crappy version of a 3D camera and release it in August 2020, beating Apple.

Then Android fans will cheer that Android was first, Apple was copying. When that's not the whole or true story.

I wish this would have explained what Time of Flight means

Based on this text, "using a laser or LED to bounce off of objects," it is obvious to me that the 2020 iPhones will have a device on the rear which will launch a small laser or LED projectile towards objects in the room. Based on the time that it takes for the projectile to bounce off of an object, something will happen.

I think the text should have been, "light from a laser or standard LED to bounce off of objects"

Seems like that’s the upcoming trend.
iPhone 6, 6s, 7.
iPhone X, XS, and 2019.
Apple is a) responding to the elongated upgrade cycle which has increased to 3-4 years for most people and b) all the low hanging fruit/easy features are already done - anything else they want to do (in volume) its going to take years to develop

It is going to be very useful for AppleMaps in street view for example or inside buildings AR Nav.

I get what you are saying...but to me this is like the 4K TV situation. I was buying a TV for my 81 yr old grandmother for her bedroom - she has no use for 4K but I was able to grab a TCL 43" 4K TV for $199 - making the decision a no brainier.

If the phone already has AR/3D at the same price then no harm no foul but I don't think regular customer are going to pay more or upgrade for this.

Your anecdote doesn't make sense, Android phones with Tof sensors already exist and are available to buy.

Fair enough, I don't believe anyone can confirm if the inclusion will cost more or if it is be absorbed into the present price structure. People usually upgrade their phones depending on many factors such as battery life, photo quality, device damage, storage capacity, budget, etc. I would be hard pressed to confirm that most would upgrade just for a single item, there are a minority that will upgrade annually regardless however the majority look at price as a major factor.

Reminds me of the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray wars, where it came down to the gaming consoles support that eventually settled that or BETA Max and VHS.

Apple should just take the 2018 models, add some fins to the sides, and release as the new 2020 iPhones.

Shame on you Apple, instead, innovate and bringing new features, is Apple now copying features that android has for years ! Even the rumored iPhone for China with Qualcomms fingerprint sensor under the glass. Where are the innovations I expected from Apple. I always though Apple follows different philosophy, to be uniqe, to create a better technology than the competion, but instead of that, we see the oposite :mad:
Other than the hyperbole embedded herein, you do know that Samsung is not even using their own fingerprint sensor. Talk about cooying.

Apple’s philosophy is innovation. Innovation starts with copying and then making it better. Some examples are: Touch ID, Face ID, smart hdr, AirPods, ekg etc.

The camera focusing improvement will
Be nice, and AR sounds cool in principle, but in practice it’s still a bit gimmicky. I have not found a killer AR app yet.

Does anybody here use AR on a regular basis?
