Either they will claim (or it will) interfere with public sensors (cameras, police night vision, etc) and that will be the end of that. Just watch Governments shut this down in the name of 'security' and 'public safety'.

But I can't see them really being that powerful (ie. to scan a building across the street) so they may have very limited applications (close range).

Samsung and LG already have these, as so many other cameras. There’s been no push to ban them.

Actually, you are being rude. When he wrote the question it was NOT in the article. If you read the thread you will see that the article's author apologized and noted that the explanation was added IN RESPONSE TO THE COMMENT you are harping on.
Thank you. I'm happy to have that clarified. :)

You raise an interesting point. If I did not mean to be rude, and yet you interpret my solitary remark as rude... was it actually rude? Does intention matter at all, or merely perception? I leave that judgement to you, but I'll say this: a single sentence remark in a single post hardly qualifies as "harping."

The English language has a wonderfully agile vocabulary, and I wish it was put to better use.

It was objectively rude because even if you were correct, there was no point in responding to him in the way you did. You could simply have pasted in the text from the article, but it was apparent you were not interested in actually trying to be helpful. It was also objectively rude because, much like someone who decides to interject an irrelevant point into a conversation he just joined, you ignored the context. You could have seen if anyone else had responded, and would have seen multiple people had provided the answer, and the post’s original author apologized and pointed out that the article had been updated to include the answer.

In any event, there have been lots of questions here about what ToF is, and what tangible benefits there are for the phone’s users, and these are all good questions that deserved, and received, substantive responses.

You shine a laser out of the phone and time how fast it bounces back. The camera can thus easily build up a 3-d understanding of how far everything is in front of it. Allows easy capture of 3-d models ,but also provides useful information about what to focus on and how to focus.

I'm late to reply, but: a time-of-flight camera is exactly what Google used in the public Tango phones such as the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. That was a 2016 launch, but if the technological constraints are still basically the same then:
  • mapping dark surfaces is really hard — they don't sufficiently reflect the light to allow the time of its flight to be measured; and
  • range is only a few metres in any case.
But a few metres is more than enough for accurate focussing, if that were one of the objectives, as that's an inverse relationship thing and 'infinity' isn't too far away. On the Google phones the time-of-flight camera was used primarily to enable the sort of augmented reality that ARKit already does pretty well in software alone.

Can anyone comment on the mail app's stability at this point? There was a time where I would run beta's on my phone from version 1, but due to my current job, I need to rely on the mail app to read and write emails remotely (i'm ok with some hiccups).

does it mean 2019 iPhones will be iPhone XSS? All new features will go to iPhone 2020?

Much better for me in beta 5, after loads of trouble in betas 1-3 and slightly less trouble in beta 4.

At this point, I feel like I should wait on the 2022 iPhone for the dust to settle. Kinda makes sense too considering how long Apple supports newer iOS upgrades on older devices. I’m sure my iPhone X will be supported up to iOS 17.

Maybe it's just me, but is anybody ELSE terrified of people shining lasers all over the place at work, school, home, and even in the restroom?

Are we going to end up with a massive but excellent library of 3D eyeball meshes but pay for it with a world of people with burned out retinas, stumbling about trying to find a restroom or their underwear?

It’s just collimated light, not a Star Trek phaser. Not all lasers are the kind of laser you are worrying about.

Wow. A man after my own heart.

Seriously. Good on you for looking to set someone straight with the facts, and without making it personal. I think we're all permitted a mistake now and then. :)

Will we be able to setup calendar meetings and check invitees availability using iPhone?
Set rules on emails? Other productivity features? Who cares about these features?

Face ID will never be removed, as the 3D camera is now needed for features like Animoji and AR capabilities that are becoming mainstream. I'd be shocked if they removed the 3D camera. They'll just find a way to make it smaller and more hidden.

strong words. will "never" removed

In Apples defence, the 2019 phones will have another camera and a sexy matte glass finish.

It'll be like moving from an iPhone 8 to an iPhone 7 ... design wise.

Just a couple of years and they can revert back to the iPhone 4 design, and stay there!

The most boring thing about 2019 iPhones are the comments telling how 2019 iPhones are boring.
This convoluted saying is so old only baby can appreciate your “cleverness”. As for the iPhone 2019, if there is something worth exciting about, it wouldn’t be boring like this, would it?
