Here's what I found

Purchase Quantity.
Staff, students and parents purchasing from the Apple Store for Education Individuals will be allowed to purchase the following quantities of product per academic school year:

a. Desktop: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
b. Mac mini: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
c. Notebook: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
d. Display: A maximum of two (2) may be purchased per academic year
e. Software: A maximum of two (2) per software title may be purchased per academic year

Thanks for looking. I've seen that from the US Store, but I can't find anything equivalent on the UK Store. The terms are not always the same.....

That refers to 5 rebates per household, not 5 computers. If that's the only condition, I could order 20 computers with education discount, but only claim 5 iPod rebates :D

Not that I'm likely to buy 20!

:)

It's not the only condition; the terms are concurrent - I don't think anyone's likely to buy 5 computers, or 20 ;)

As relatively few students live alone it's so that the household can take advantage of it without being flagged as buying too many. The individual limit still applies.

The answer to the original question was listed above - 1 laptop etc, but the rebate can be done 5 times through the same house (if there are 5 students there).

It's the individual limit that I'm trying to find, it's not mentioned in the terms & conditions. The problem is that I want to buy 2 desktops (one for work and one for home), but the US terms state only one desktop per academic year. I'm trying to find out if the UK individual limits are definitely the same as the US, but can't see them anywhere on Apple's website. I'll give Apple a call to find out.

You were right!

Just went into Apple Store Chat. They confirmed that it's the same terms as the US Store - one desktop plus one laptop per academic year.

I guess I'll have to buy a laptop plus a desktop instead of 2 desktops. What a terrible hardship ;)

Higher education discount and in-store discount

I found that accessing the HE discount store thro Apple website on campus (Edinburgh, UK) was the same amount of discount ~13% as in an Apple store (Glasgow, UK). I phoned up the apple store to find out how much it was with educational discount before I went to the store.

When I was at the Apple store, they simply scanned the barcode of my student card at their counter and that's as simple as that, discount straight away for the MacBook, including the extra 2 years warranty which normally costs £200, but it's only £50 for the educational discount.

Why I didn't order online

Forgot to say that, through the experience of a few friends, the delivery could take up to a good few weeks if ordered online (very annoying!), whereas when I went to the Apple store I could just take a MacBook home from the store with the same discount!

Definitely worth the trek going to the store (best to phone up the specs / model you want is in stock first!), and the Apple staff are ever so friendly and helpful!

You do realise its "as standard" to get 3 years hardware warranty on macs purchased through higher education. The applecare (£50 extra) just increases telephone support from 90 days as standard to 3 years.

interesting... quite late for it to start!

Apple has finally started offering a Back to School promo for U.K. customers. The new promotion kicked off today, just as the U.S. promotion ended.

U.K. customers who purchase a Mac (excluding the Mac Mini) and an iPod (Nano or Touch) get a rebate of £95. The rebate does not quite offset the cost of iPods which start at £109. The promotion runs until October 31st and is open to students, teachers and education professionals.

Eligible customers can buy through the Online Apple Store. A FAQ and Terms and Conditions are available.

What is the "limited parts and labour" bit about? Must mean you don't get the same technical/hardware support deal as with the regular AppleCare. For £50-ish I'd just get the 3yr AppleCare... especially on a portable

I think you should edit that, as UK prices include Tax! UK VAT IS 17.5%, a £95 rebate more than covers that on an 8GB Nano.

So do they take £95 off and you pay VAT on what's left, or do you still have to pay VAT on the price of a Nano?

The 3 year education warranty does not usually include on site pickup/or replacement with a new machine. If there is a fault with the machine, you will have to take to an AASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider) in most instances.

Having AppleCare on my Macs has proven beneficial as I do not live near an AASP or Apple Store. Apple have happily sent a courier to pick up my machine and swap it out with a new one.

The VAT is a bit of a red herring.

You pay the full price for an iPod, e.g. £109 for a 8GB iPod Nano (which includes VAT).

You then claim back £95 from Apple, so it's actually cost you £109 - £95 = £14.

true

Last year, the same promotion finished on October 31st, it was November (2nd?) when the new macbooks were released (I would know, I bought one :p)

-Rich-

yes i can confirm that. last year i was about to buy macbook through the back to schook uk offer but read on macrumors that new macbooks were coming the week after the promotion was due to end. and thats exactly what happened. the promotion ended on 31st Oct and new santa rosa macbooks were released the on the 1st or 2nd of november. i know because i bought the santa rosa one and was happy that i waited... sure i missed out on a free ipod but the speed bump was worth it :D

PS: if you're a university student make sure you buy from apple Higher Education UK store... not the 'normal' apple education store... theres a BIG difference in discount rates (14%/7% i think)

New Macs November 4th, then? tbh I don't think Apple governs its releases on back to school promos. It may have a little influence but there are plenty of customers outside the education sector. I wouldn't be surprised to see them earlier.

Yep

Remember the higher education store has more of a discount but requires an on campus connection (a few people have disputed this). There are definitely differences in price between the two education stores!

Absolutely true, altgough the discount is not consistant accross all lines and products.

It is also NOT available from Apple's retail stores. It must be from behind the universities firewall.

But also last year they included the new iMac in the promotion as soon as it came out. So I think it is not ruled out that they might do the same with the Macbooks.

Apple needs to get moving, their current line-up is getting stale.

Incorrect, at least in the UK.

Yeah, this is why I think we may see new Macs anytime. Back to school is over in the US, I think they may just take the hit and release new Macs before the free iPod promotion is done in other areas of the world.

Could someone please confirm whether you get a HE discount on an ipod touch or whether you pay full price? Thanks

Educational

I have been able to log onto the Apple store with my college I.D. for years (I graduated in 2005). Will they ever catch on or will I forever be able to buy Mac's at a pathetically discounted price?

US Education Discount?

Does anybody know if the US has different education stores? I have seen where grade school has a store (through high school) but it is for teachers and educators only, and there is one for college that is for students and staff. They are both about about 10% (lowest Macbook is $999 and reg price is $1099).

Sure would love 14%! Waiting for the new stuff....

Wow...

Has anyone else noticed how apples stock has tanked from about 180 to 135 over the past few weeks?

So much for new Macbooks. Unlikely to happen now until this finishes.

not at all, new ipods were just released during the u.s. back to school program and they just weren't eligible with the promotion. this won't affect the release of new macbooks at all... if they are getting released at all that is :p
