I've definitely not seen that with any of my orders over the past few years. Mine have always traveled the same route each year for as long as I can remember. I might have been in a different group than you.
In South Florida and even Orlando Florida they still have preorder pickups available on 9/20

in connecticut (central) u can get almost every iphone for pickup on release date, except for a few 1tb models.
Maybe. I swear ever year I’m gonna save a screenshot of my tracking info but I never do. I think it was the 13 or 14 maybe last I noticed…but I’ve definitely seen them go straight to Alaska. I remember being surprised by it. They use to go through Hong Kong at one point as well. I’ve seen them come from shenzen as well.
Got an update from UPS that it has departed the facility in Zhengzhou, China at 1:35am on 09/17 and is on the way
It does appear that way for anyone with a 1:35 AM departure scan. Atlas GTI8171 rolled for taxi at 1:04 AM and lifted off at 1:35 AM CST (China Standard Time). This matches the UPS tracking time (it is dynamic for flights).
It's departing from it's planned flight path to avoid weather so they will be late in ANC. It is a non-stop flight.

old guy here, I too usually wake up before my alarms! It is crazy! So often within minutes of when my apple watch alarm will be alarming.I'm an old guy... haven't used an alarm clock in 40 years or so... I always wake up early for any events - phone pre-orders, flights, meetings, etc. It just happens.
So happens that on Preorder day I woke up minutes before my 7:40am alarm. But also woke up a 5:45, 2:55, and 12:05, each of those obviously too early to be of help with preorder.
I must remember to order something on Apple's online store the day before so my Apple Card gets refreshed. Issues last year and this year, but much easier to fix this year.
👉🏻 Also, $72 for a case is a bit high for my budget. Another hard pass from me.
Didn't even notice that I had a 1:35am departure scan. Opted to have the phone delivered on Friday and then I'll pick up my watch on Saturday (closest store is a 45 minute drive).
Not yet. I was anticipating later this afternoon/early evening based on what popped up last year in my scans.
Was your last scan before this an Arrival scan ZZ 6:30 PM on 9/15? I'm just trying to determine if you're my wave or not.
I've read that regular iPhone 16s are selling much better than the Pro models.
apple's clear case has an open bottom... that's why a lot of people don't like it!
