WARNING!! Make sure that your AT&T billing address is the same as the address you want to ship your phone to, because Apple cannot ship to a different address!
I lost my pre-order because even after I changed my address at AT&T, I couldn't change it at Apple without CANCELLING my pre-order and going through the entire process again. Even though I had my pre-order ready since last night, I lost my place in line and had to "wait" again at Apple.com/store until they let me in to pre-order again. Even after sprinting through that process, I was left with a phone being delivered Oct 2 instead of Sep 20.
APPLE SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME THE AT&T-FORCED SHIPPING ADDRESS AS PART OF THE "PREPARE FOR PRE-ORDER" PROCESS. Then I could have corrected it at AT&T and restarted the process at Apple prior to the 5am pre-sale gun.
I am extremely irritated at this -- I was trying to get my phone shipped to a vacation house we're renting, but now I'm not getting it during vacation and can't even get it the next week -- I'm going to be on a business trip. So instead of getting my phone on 9/20, I won't get my hands on it for nearly a MONTH because this pre-order process was so difficult. Every year, something goes wrong. I've never received a phone on opening day.
I really have no reason to stay with AT&T, as a financing option or as a carrier. Next year I'm dumping them.
Additionally... earlier last night when I was "Preparing for pre-order" I couldn't complete the process because after verifying my phone number and Last 4 SSN for my AT&T account, the Apple website would "error" with a page that I couldn't do anything on. Through several troubleshooting efforts, I figured out that the balance on my installment account @ AT&T was the problem. I paid off my phone at AT&T and then restarted the pre-order process on Apple and it worked normally. Apple should be capturing the error from AT&T and offering the user a chance to pay off the device right there -- or at least telling them they need to pay it off at AT&T.
Offered in the spirit of Apple and AT&T fixing these problems that really alienated a large and loyal customer.
