I agree..... The servers are just getting freaking hammered right now. There is no magical spell or tool that you can use to get it going. I have a feeling it will slow down as the day progresses on. By tomorrow it should be ok. Keeping fingers crossed that it will be ok.

Mine has been activated but won't sync to the store which is fine for right now.

Yes there is.

It's this easy: they should black traffic from anywhere except the Apple Stores and the AT&T stores until it dies down. Of course, they've sent people home en masse now so that's not going to get it done anymore.

My 3g iPhone just unbricked also. No sync yet, but at least i have a phone, and the speakers on the 3g are 200% louder than the other iphone, a HUGE PLUS!!!

I have 2 separate phones im waiting on right now, both purchased at the exact same time. (ok about 2 minutes apart).

The one purchased second unbricked and got the activated text message, but still cannot connect/sync. Huge plus, but not good enough.

Currently waiting for my other that was purchased FIRST to unbrick. wtf. give me service at least even if i cant connect to itunes yet.

Im loosing money by the minute. Thanks Apple.

If your phone is activated, please just stop trying to get onto the iTunes server, write down your important numbers and for the love of humanity let the servers breath!!! they should be fine by tonight and by then everyone will be able to sync everything, and everything will be amazing!

Got mine today in San Diego

The AT&T Store in La Jolla did a pretty decent job this morning. I got there at around 6:30am and was about 30th in line. I made it out of the store, with a 16gb white iphone in hand at about 10:15, but it still does not work, emergency calls only it says. Thank goodness I still have my Verizon phone, 2 more weeks on contract, so I couldn't port it yet.

I feel bad for all the people waiting in line still, they aren't going to get one. The store only had 60 phones to begin with, and probably only about 25 left when I walked out, there were still well over 100 people outside waiting.

AT&T reps were outside talking to everyone, making sure we all know the requirements while we were waiting in line, i.e. authorized user, 1 phone per person, etc. They were strictly enforcing the 1 phone rule, so props to them. They were handing out bottled water also.

There was one guy sitting in front of me in line smoking his hooka! LOL Then his dad pulls up in his shiny new BMW about 15 minutes before the store opens and cuts in line and says "my son was saving my place". Everyone was pissed at his dad. I think they only let them buy 1 iphone though, so it's all good. ;)

I hope I can get this puppy working soon.

finaly got through to apple activation screen, was taken to log in using APPLE ID and then REGISTRATION OF PRODUCT. got an error message about my internet being down then take to restore my iphone.....i think something messed up cuzzz it seems weird that it jumped around like that

My upgrade of my old iPhone just went through at 2:15pm eastern time. Hopefully that means things are getting better for everyone.

If you're saying that the connection problem through iTunes is a problem accessing AT&T's server, well then I don't know. All I know is iTunes says "Attempting to access iTunes store" and then craps out - if that IS AT&T's fault then Apple should really get out there and start making that clear because there's no reason for anyone caught in this right now to assume anything except that it's Apple's fault.

And even if it IS a problem with AT&T's servers, Apple should have been all over it. They were the ones pushing the marketing blitz. They should have anticipated any potential bottleneck and been all over it before today.

I'm glad to hear some people are finally getting through. I'd hate to think I was out of a phone for the weekend.

The problem....just like in the beginning had to do with ATT. There was an overload of people on the servers trying to activate and ATT couldnt handle it. I still cant get my iPod touch going, and its getting me mad.

Got mine working :D

On the plus side, I finally got mine to update and sync. Few nervous hours there. Exchange support is AWSOME! Was extremely easy to set up. OmniFocus is also great and synching seems to work fairly well. And, the chopper game is a lot of fun.

Good luck all the rest of you. Definitely worth it once you get set up.

AT&T stores can get SOME iPhones working!

All,
My brother is a rep for AT&T and before I told him anything about what has been going on today with Apple he was OUTRAGED that he could only get about 50% of his activations to work. When I told him that NONE of the 40+ people in front of me at the Mall of America Apple store (I was about 50th in line) got theirs working before I left, he just about died laughing.

I'm not sure why, and neither was he, maybe he was getting lucky but he said it was "about 50-50 whether or not he could get the activations to work.

Take that for what it is worth.

That's what the Apple people say, but I don't believe it, as much as I want to.

Here's the thing: AT&T's server updated my plan in 15-20 seconds. The iTunes server is taking the time now. And I know AT&T's good to go because my old IMEI in my old iPhone is not working.

Unless I don't understand something (hugely possible), this looks like Apple's snafu.

Activations Working

Ok, Maybe it was just luck. I plugged in my iPhone 3G. And "connect to itunes" and stuff. So. I clicked the iPhone icon in iTunes... "accessing" Got an error but kept trying.. So. While it was "accessing" I got a text message, and it activated itself...? It works though. But if I plug it back into iTunes it doesn't think it's activated so no music for now!

Let me know if it works!

The lesson learned today is to just wait few days and let the dust settle. Is definately not worth to go through this hell right now.:D

MEBSAT: Nailed it!

How to crash your web server/data center:

1) Come out with an update to an existing application that is used by millions of people on multiple platforms and that they use to access your website. Ensure this update is substantial in size. (iTunes 7.7)

2) Launch a new part of that existing website that encourages frequent reloads and increased traffic. (App Store)

3) Conduct a worldwide product launch that requires access to that website to activate the product. (iPhone 3G)

3) Have everyone who bought the first version of your product download the new OS software from the same website. (iPhone 2.0)

4) For good measure, completely upgrade a historically low-revenue/low-margin product that users use for online storage. When existing/trial/new users begin uploading 20 Gigs each, have your crisis team route all traffic through your main domain. (.Mac-->Mobileme, auth.apple.com)

5) Schedule all of this on the same day. (Brilliant)
{Yes, AppStore/iTunes was available earlier, but you get the point}

6) Be a company devoid of anyone with the guts to tell their effete, autocratic CEO that this is a bad freakin' idea, regardless of his penchant for simultaneous dog and pony shows. (Can you say Fonzie on waterskis?)

7) Reap the rewards of looking like a small company completely unprepared to be the big company they are becoming.

This should be the last word because it is dead on! Applause!

Apple/AT&T has absolutely botched this whole process. The self-activation process had it's kinks when the first iPhone launched but nothing like this kind of widespread disaster. I tried doing the 2.0 upgrade this morning only to brick my phone. Not only can't I use any of the great new apps I can't make or receive any calls. Is there any way to revert back to 1.0??

The fact that the highly touted MobileMe isn't working is even more pathetic.

Actually just now (1:21 CT), iTunes 7.7 told me that 1.1.4 was the latest version. Hmmm

Smart on them if this is true. They absolutely should not be allowing existing iPhone customers to update until things die down. I can imagine how frustrating it is to not be able to activate a new 3G toy, but having your existing phone die and become unusable is really quite a shock to the system.

I didn't even think about the fact that the phone might need to reauthorize itself. When servers are being hit hard for an update, usually after the software has actually downloaded, you are golden (and nothing breaks during the process).

It took me about an hour of retries to get my old iPhone authorized, so all is good now. As some have already said, Apple should have either let existing customers update over the last few days (as some did with the premature update link) or just waited a day or two to release the update for everyone else.

Of course, next time I'll know to wait a week or so before updating, as was my original plan before I got greedy.

Similar Experience

In our small town (100K Population) there are 2 ATT stores and no Apple store. We arrived at 7AM and were number 25 in line. The other store reports about twice as many people showing up. By 7:30 it was HOT and the line extended around 2 sides of the building. At 8 AM nothing happened. Ultimately employees came out and filled in preregistration forms with our preferences for phone, etc. Then we stood some more. By 8:30 word was that all the black 16GB phones had been accounted for...but nobody had walked out of the store. At 9AM ATT employees passed word that iTunes was not activating the phones and it was universal. They said a decision was being made whether to allow sales of unactivated phones and have us activate them at home. Finally about 9:15 they started letting people into the store and a few trickled out. My wife and I were both getting phones and were in the store for at least 30 minutes from 9:30-10AM. Purchase went smoothly but iTunes still refused to work. We left with two unactivated phones. My wife immediately started charging her phone on arrival home. It works on WiFi and all the apps and other functions including GPS and internet radio were working OK. Only the phone service was not activated. As I started to type at 1:15 she announced that iTunes had finally connected and her phone is supposedly activated. She is still connected to iTunes but reports the phone itself still says "no service" at 1:25. We shall see how it goes. Eventually I will connect my phone up and start the process.

Holy S**!!! - It Activated.

OMFG. What was going to be my last attempt before heading in to work, (yes, i stayed home all morning trying to activate) it finally worked!!! Now I need to decide if I should wait for it to sync. Uh, hell yeah. I guess persistence pays off. God I'm such a loser! Hang in there.

Finally!

My phone unbricked itself about 15 minutes ago (I got a ton of texts at once) and is currently syncing with iTunes. Last June I had to wait a day to activate. This has only taken 4 hours since purchase. That's a significant improvement! ;)

this is bull. how could they have not prepared?? this is tacky service.
anyway, since you do have to sign a contract, wouldn't it be easier if the phones were pre-activated, inside the box?? you go to the store, sign a contract and then get to open the box. open it and start using. why would they not do that and cause the customers so much frustration and? irritability?
?:confused::confused:

iPhone leaves you without a cell phone

In an un-presidented move to sell over 6 million iPhone 3g's AT$T and apple have left their customers with out cell phones. I personally bought mine hours ago and unknown to me a mere hour after purchase my old att phone sim card was disconnected. Registering through the itunes store is not what switches your number... and that is currently impossible due to overloaded traffic. It's paying for the phone that deactivates your sim. Now that I've been "sent home" to activate and can't because of everyone else trying we find ourselves cell-phone-less, if we were att customers!

Here's the math with the new plan.

Say 1 million att customers upgraded to the iphone 3g. Cost is about $2.25 per day for the iphone plan minimum. Since I don't have service I want my $2.25 back times one million other subscribers... That's a hefty refund... assuming 1 million and only one day of down time.

AT$T prepare to lose some income
Apple prepare to help offset the loses

Stock market... Have at them!

:apple:

I finally got my phone "activated through itunes" but now I am stuck NOT being activated by AT&T. My phone says that it has no service. Anybody else with this issue?
