Anyone know if there’s a way to guarantee I won’t be deaf if I have my AirPods in? I turned these off ages ago. I feel bad about that , as I’d like to help with Amber Alerts, but last I knew, the volume of them caused war damage. Anyone know if Apple has fixed this yet?

It may be easier on your ears if you just take them out about 5-10 minutes before the scheduled time and grab something to drink or use the facilities. I plan to do this.

Just a heads up that you cannot disable these alerts unless your phone is on airplane mode as these are considered the highest level alerts that can be sent out they by law in the US cannot be disabled in settings or by the carriers

Is there a way to opt out of this? I don’t want messages from the government for any reason as none of it is important and there will be mission creep by beaurecrats.
In Settings go to Notifications. Scroll to the bottom and there is a “Government Alerts” section.

Tomorrow also marks 12 years since the iPhone 4S was announced which means Thursday marks 12 years since Steve's passing.

Not to mention (though it seems that I have):

Adele released '21', and Charlie Sheen was fired . . .

. . . what a great year it was ;)

What happens if people are driving at the time? Hopefully the alert tones don't cause issues like accidents. That would be something if every car on the road has an emergency alert tone at exactly the same time.

This is being tested in Italy since early summer and man, it’s freaking loud when it shows up!

Now I’m driving to the office in a desert city and I have just spotted a black man who resembles Will Smith walking with a dog, but that’s fine, I’m not in with these stupid 5G conspiracy theories…

Nice that there is the option to turn the alerts off, even if that may not be the best idea.

We recently had that system tested in Germany and on the Android phone of my mother it looked really dramatic. The text had red background.

It would be cool if you could choose which emergency notifications you want to receive. For example I do not want to be informed in case of an alien invasion, but I need a notification if there are production issues at the Nutella plants again, so that I can stack up very early.

We receive this once or twice a year in Germany - with loud siren sounds too. Few weeks ago the whole office came alive when everyone’s iPhone (yes, only one Android guy - over 40 years old - who always comes to me with his fanboyish ramblings about his 200€ Samsung phone) started buzzing.

I might be the only person on MacRumors who looked at his iPhone high on a mountain in Hawai'i after an alert tone in Jan 2018 and saw something like "ballistic missile threat incoming take shelter this is not a drill."

It was, er, startling. Then because I was in one of my favorite places, I thought "this is a good place to die."

It was a mistake, of course.

Mistakes happen, people are human. But I imagine that mistake cost atleast one or two people their employment.

I'll be in airplane mode for that hour. I don't need to hear that BS. I don't care even if was a legit, real warning. Leave me alone. I turn that junk off for a reason. If the aliens come for us, I'll find out on my own. I don't need the last thing I hear to be your annoying notification.

Ignorance is bliss. I wonder how many lives could have been saved in Maui had their emergency notification worked.

Having lived through cv insanity -- "Stay away from people!", "Don't go outside!", "Cover the only two sets of breathing holes you have!", "It's just three weeks to 'flatten the curve'!", etc., I refuse to let the feds blast my phone with this stupidity.

If there is an emergency that is going to affect me, I'm going to know about it without this sort of Big Brother idiocy.
