You've got that backwards. More dropped calls when this interrupts one. Or you can't make a call at first when your phone connects to this instead of a real cell phone tower.

Maybe this is why the US has such an issue with dropped calls.

How is this limiting your freedom? Please explain.

A planet. 1 species.

Because the government knows exactly where you are. Which is definitely pretty bad for a western democracy.

our enemies don't have borders anymore. if it means capturing the next terrorist and their cell, go for it. I'm not doing anything wrong, so i'm not worried

Famous last words from an internet tough guy. Since when does someone have to do anything "wrong" to be accused or arrested for 'terrorism'? Lots of people have been falsely accused and sent to black sites or worse. And just who decides what's "wrong"? You, or the government? What is "wrong" always keeps changing.

It's people like you who say 'bring on the police state' who are destroying the world for the rest of us. Hope you enjoy having your freedoms taken away and hope you end up being tortured on bogus trumped up charges.

Despicable.

Stellar comment, thank you!

LOL. there is nothing on my hard drives, but if thats the way you think makes me wonder whats on yours

Your hard drives are empty?

Besides, no porn? No pirated movies, TV shows or music? No emails or text messages that could be taken out of context?

You must be the only one...

If I had to guess this is used in a targeted manner. They have info someone is near here, fly over and see. Doubtful that this is on all the time.
With persistent drones it certainly could be anytime now. Authorities are the only professionals with FAA approval for drones on a wide basis.
article said:
Justice Department officials did not confirm or deny the existence of the program when questioned, stating that a discussion of the matter could "allow criminal suspects or foreign powers to determine U.S. surveillance capabilities," but a representative said that Justice Department agencies comply with federal law and seek court approval for their activities.
So they confirm the program, its domestic use, and that it is also being used domestically on foreign nationals. That's an interesting revelation in and of itself.

The George Orwell world of 1984 is becoming more real every day. We are sliding on the slippery slope faster and faster with apperently no end in sight.

Exactly

I don't see anywhere in the article where a warrant is needed for this. They are not searching your phone for your data, as they are going through an intermediary. If anything, the 4th Amendment wouldn't apply, as all they would need to do is get a subpoena from the phone companies to use their towers. Nothing more.

Martin Niemöller was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

He was best known for the following quote:

Just because you aren't doing anything wrong doesn't mean you should be complicit in what is happening. That type of non-action implies that you also condone it.

BL.

You Sir have saved me a reply! Its shame people in the US and countries such as the UK are living the illusion of thinking they're free when in fact they are being ruled by an Iron Fist in a silk glove. I could go on but the shepple will only attack me with quotes like "Well if you have nothing to hide then whats the problem etc etc".
Its a real shame that people are prepared to give up privacy in favour of so called governments spinning them a load of bull about security and exaggerating peoples safety in order for the government to spy on them. Don't think about peaking out either or else the government will send in their dogs (the police) to shut you up good and proper!

I don't trust a government that doesn't trust me with a phone.

But they're not phones any more. That device in your pocket has become the main computer for many people. A Nokia from the 90's would be just a "phone". Now we have micro computers.

Going to play a drinking game with this thread later. Shot every time someone says "sheeple" or "wake up".

I'll bet that it is not true that your are not doing anything wrong. We have millions of regulations and politician's that will do whatever they can get away with including violating the law.

We know that the current administration and the IRS targeted specific political groups they disagreed with. I'll bet that you disagree with one of the two main political groups and monitoring like this could be used to determine just how good a citizen you are. All monitoring of law abiding citizens is wrong no matter what value someone thinks is provided, or which political group you happen to agree with.

new this was too good to be true..

Just one more way the governments can track you,, that's all it is...

And its supposed to be convenient..

I wouldn't bet this is true,,,, Governments are cable of anything, If is fake, then shame on them.

Look out NSA.. more juicy stuff is coming your way.

This is why i would never phone calls or take any on a plane.... I'm relaxing here,,, u cannot relax if u'r been pestered by your boss.

I don't trust a government that doesn't trust me with a phone.

This seems excessive

I often wonder if this sort of surveillance was inevitable post 9/11 or not.

Yet people will be okay with this because fear drives this.

Do governments ever target people who are doing nothing wrong? Do government employees ever target their enemies, ex-lovers or business competitors?

Obviously you must trust all current leaders and employees of government to do the right thing and never target the innocent. And obviously you do NOT trust all past leaders and employees, since they've proven the opposite (from locking up American citizens and killing their pets because they looked Japanese, to framing political targets for things they didn't do, etc.).

Leaving the question: do you trust all future leaders and employees?

As cool as this admittedly is, it's amazing how so many people here have absolutely no problem with a government agency freely being able to access personal text/voice conversations.

Just because you have "nothing to hide." Umm, how about your privacy?

Or is that not important? Agreeing to have a Gmail account and it scanning your messages for targeted ads is one thing, but having a plane fly overhead and swoop up data, ESPECIALLY when there is no probable cause against you, is concerning.

I would wager that maintaining the privacy of an innocent individual is more important than busting a drug dealer selling weed to a bunch of High School kids.

What kind of a warrant covers the scanning of thousands of phones and recording data? When you wiretap someone legally, you must specify who and why.

Police State.

If anyone really believes the data collected from non-targets is actually "let go", you are incredible naïve.

“Those who would give up Essential Liberty, to purchase a little Temporary safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" - Benjamin Franklin

To all of you please think of this.

You don’t trust your OWN government.

Then why should anybody in the rest of the WORLD, trust the US Government?

And you thought your data speeds were slow before all this. Welcome to the 1990's.

Isn't this why terrorist use burners so they can change phones on a weekly basis?

I have no problem with this. We've been monitored forever so if they wanted to do something specific to any citizen, it would have been done by now. I see nothing wrong with it in the era or terrorism. Its getting closer and closer to home so what ever it takes to protect my family, I'm okay with it.

Heck they could have even given an announcement written and auditory stating that if cell phones or transmitting devices are used during flights, data shall be monitored to ensure safety of the flight.

This is just wrong on so many levels. Giving up your privacy to the government in the name of fighting crime, just to "protect" yourself and "because you're not doing anything wrong" is ludicrous.

And on a more basic point, you don't seem to even understand what the article is saying. This is not the government tracking your data/calls while you're on a flight. This is the government using aircraft to monitor/track your data while you're walking down the street, by using said aircraft as fake cell phone towers. In other words, surreptitiously monitoring everyone who happens to be in an area, and lying by telling you that you're connected to a legitimate cell phone tower when you're not.

If you're not completely pissed off about this you're not paying attention.

To all of you please think of this.

You don’t trust your OWN government.

Then why should anybody in the rest of the WORLD, trust the US Government?

Nobody should ever blindly trust their government. There is this little document you may want to read when you have time. It's called the United States Constitution. Among other things it lays out a framework by which the citizens can keep the government accountable for its actions.

And our government's actions in this case alone are proof that they are not to be trusted. They are lying to their citizens by telling them that they are connected to a legitimate cell tower, when in fact the government is purposely and surreptitiously using the fake cell tower to monitor them. So what, exactly are they doing to earn my trust?

No where does it say they can "access personal text/voice conversations". All they are doing is obtaining location data. Cell phone companies can already do this. When your phone is used it is connected to different towers and as such that information is available. If they are in fact using this to locate said criminals/terrorists then good for them. As other have stated, I have no problem with them seeing what tower my phone is connected to. Hell it would be awesome if the phone was stolen and they used this to track the SOB who took it. Don't see this as a privacy issue as long as they are just obtaining location info. Google is worst than this. :)

Amazing and scary tech. Sounds good to most of us now as it controls the bad guys to a degree, but it won't be so good when the government decides to use it according to their purposes to control us.

They do have a monumental job to do, protecting society from terrorism.
