I know where this is heading. Apple will drop their desktop models and release an Air/Pro hybrid. Their line-up will be iPad, iPhone, iPod(s), Air/Pro hybrid and that's it. Amirite?

It is a pretty bad time to get new hardware with Ivy Bridge, Trinity, Kepler, and GCN products still on the horizon.
If they did that it's more likely they would also merge all the desktop models into one product - probably the iMac with a basic iMac and iMac Pro models. They won't drop the desktop altogether IMHO.
What makes you think Mountain Lion is any better than Lion?
Do you realize how long ago it was when Jobs last said "one more thing"?

Speaking of iMac, will the next update be a complete redesign? I'm holding out for a minority report-style minimalist, transparent glass design. Current design is way too thick, bezel needs to go, etc. Come on, Apple, take my money!
The age of the Mac Pro is more than embarrassing at this point... I'm very glad I didn't wait around and went for a fully-loaded 27-inch iMac.![]()
For many people, a desktop machine with the display and computer in one package is ideal.
But, not everyone wants the display and the computer in one package that cannot be updated with new hardware (RAM, video card, disk drives, etc.) easily.

Even in the earliest beta, it runs much better.
A Mac Story on Macrumors!
Define "much better."
Because most people's computers which aren't Macs do pretty much what they need for less money and with more choice.
I have a 13" MBP (late 2011). Sorry for killing the theory that no one buys them. I do LOTS of video editing with Final Cut Pro. I play several video games from CoD 4: Modern Warfare and Batman: Arkham Asylum to RAGE and they work flawlessly. I use the ODD quite a bit;
Other than the ODD bit, wouldn't an Air with a faster chip be just as capable for all the things you do if not better due to the higher resolution? I can see the argument for the ones with a dedicated GPU but the 13" MBP doesn't have that option as far as I know and use the same built-in GPU as the Air does. I suppose the SSD capacity would be the only limitation then.
The user interface is much more responsive.
