If you use(d) your laptop just for web browsing yea. Anything else forget it. Laptops are still king for just about everything else.

Actually i took an 3G enabled iPad and a USB mouse and keyboard with me on a businees trip, thanks to LogMein i got to use the full power of my Desktop whilst sat within a wave of the Bar at the hotel :D

With everything being infinitely connected nowadays the iPad is a superb option, its light, has a long battery life, and all the heavy lifting is done by a remote system.

Kinda takes me back to the good old days when we had Mainframes and terminals, only now the terminals are portable and the mainframe sits on my desk at home.

It blows my mind that people are still buying a Dell or HP over Apple.

It's not people as in consumers but businesses, government, and education buying the bulk of new Win PCs.

Consumers are not really buying PCs much at all, Mac or Win, and if you could remove all the institutional purchases Macs would be leading. But a sale is a sale so that's not really all that productive of a metric.

Glass half full: the slide isn't all that bad when you consider Apple only pushed out 1 new product, the 27" iMac, the first half of the year.

But Q3 and Q4 are going to be vital to whether the first half was an anomaly or a trend.

How about gaming? Macs aren't the best option. It's naive to think otherwise.

89%...eighty nine percent of market stats are for Windows...not much has really changed....in 10 years. Very little growth if at all as a percentage of the market.

Like many people I know, it looks like those enterprise folks who bought iPads figured out they were useless as work devices. Explains the surge in Lenovos. :D

Apple doesn't sell the most computers. They make the best computers though. Period. The best things in life aren't cheap.

Bright sunny days, Fresh air, Good Friends , the love of a good woman/man (your preference) ..... Dude your priorities are messed up !! The best things in life are FREE

Why is Lenovo surging?

I must really live in a bubble. The number of Apple laptops I see around me on a daily basis makes them seem dominant. Maybe my shareholder eyes are just really good at picking them out of a crowd.

They making a good push - We just got a few Lenovo IdeaPad U310 i5 in the office and they built like a tank - People also love how they look. At 499 you really cant go wrong.

The are several issues but I'm not surprised by this at all.

Tablets are massively cannibalising laptops, they are cheap, reliable, instant on, small and have all the connectivity (wifi-3G) and apps you could ever need.

Apple has outperformed the trends for so long it's due some retraction of it's market especially as they are at the end of a product cycle with no sign of reducing Pro prices having just created another 'higher' tier with the retina mac.

Sad but true the Retina is over priced and unsuitable for the market.

Apple needs to offer 1-2TB drives at the same price as the current 15 inch pro, flash or not. Apples should just forego the cost of the flash drives and crush that price point right down.

The people in the market for a high end laptop for pro creative activities such as Video, Music, 3D, Graphics etc couldn't care less about retina or thin.

If Apple don't update the current mac pro this time round a lot of die hard fans are going to be pissed. The retina is overpriced and less capable.

Apple should massively drop the price if they don't update the non-retina.

There will be a huge gap without it there :(

I think it has to do with people waiting for a Macbook Pro with Haswell. I've seen some articles that say to people that they should wait.
Also I think that iPad made a major impact on Macbook sales, because most people aren't tech savvy and all they need is just basic things that all can be accomplished on tablet. My mom bought iPad instead of a notebook. All she does is watches shows on youtube and browsing the web. She doesn't need more. It is just here all we talk about is specs because of of people here are tech savvy, but in reality most people wont have any idea what specs are.

Well, IDC's report is a bit more positive, and so happens I tend to believe them more.

i just dont see the point of buying something twice the price with half the speed and half the connectivity..

Spot on. But even where I agree with you here I do prefer working on Mac OSX above Windows 8 which I truly dislike. I work both on Windows PC's and Apple computers due of my work. I'm also thinking of buying the new Mac Pro and all though you're right about the cost, with Thunderbolt technology you are able to expand your machines. But true, Macs do cost more then PC's, but then again, it's not alway's the cost that matters, at least not to everybody.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Particularly in regards to the tablets taking sales from the MacBooks. I hardly ever use my MacBook Air but my iPad mini gets used several hours a day. I sold my wife's laptop (it was never used) after she purchased an iPad. I offered to buy her an 11" air and she declined. She just wants a keyboard for her iPad.

However, I am surprised win8 didn't push more users over to apple.

since apple no longer allows upgrades of their machines and the parts they use inside are more or less bottom of the barrel (cheap ram, slow ssds, nics that dont support jumbo frames, some laptops dont even have lan anymore which is useless for large file transfers, no wifi AC until just now)

i got a lenovo y580 instead, for half the price of the retina macbook ($1279) i got the following

Intel i7 3630
15.6" 1920x1080 with 97% color gamut
16GB Corsair vengeance (upgraded)
512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD (one of the fastest ssds you can buy)
256GB Samsung mSATA (for OS)
Bluray burner (optional HDD bracket option for tripple SSDs)
nVidia GTX660M 2GB ram
Intel 6205 2x2 AGN (but this laptop allows me to upgrade to any wifi card i want, so once intel comes out with an AC card i can just upgrade it for not much more than $20, i dont have to buy a whole new laptop)

i just dont see the point of buying something twice the price with half the speed and half the connectivity.

thats strange, they dont make computers at all, Hon hai makes all the computers, the same company that makes HP's computers (more of their business line than consumer).

Yet it still run on crappy ware called windows, which make it a waste of hardware power.

Same here. I bought my mother an iPad 2 a while ago and she loves it. Perfect for looking at email, photos of grandchild, surfing the web, etc. I doubt she has updated the iOS since she got it and I doubt she will. The amazing thing to me is despite the fact that she's totally technologically illiterate, she's so comfortable using the iPad. She doesn't even use a cell phone.

True, but Apple knew that laptops sales would decline, they even state often that the PC era is over...

Apple has outperformed the trends for so long it's due some retraction of it's market especially as they are at the end of a product cycle with no sign of reducing Pro prices having just created another 'higher' tier with the retina mac.

Overprized, yes partly true, but unsuitable for the market dunno. That remains to be seen.

Agree.

The people in the market for a high end laptop for pro creative activities such as Video, Music, 3D, Graphics etc couldn't care less about retina or thin.

That's correct.

Well, not should but could. And with Apple's amount of money they could do it. Time will tell.

Maybe Apple should try, you know, releasing new products again? That seemed to work in the past. This whole drought thing doesn't seem to be working particularly well, shock horror.

The whole PC business is in a weird situation at the moment. Things in life go in a circle, we were lucky to experience a time when computing enabled us to do and create things. Unfortunately we are now in reverse, we are just being made consumers again. And this is not a conspiracy, but it is what the majority of people wanted, and is happy with. I think it might take a few years ( or more) to make PCs what they used to be.
I have left Windows quite a few years ago and have no intention of going back, but I find it a bit sad/odd/scary that MS might be the ones to suffer most.
Apple is used to being the underdog, Microsoft is not (despite Zune, Surface etc.),
Apple is doing OK as people are used to pay a higher price. And their iGadgets will do OK for a couple of years. MS is not having this much luck their own devices are a very mixed bag, the Xbox is very popular, the Surface so far is a flop, so was the Zune and the Kin. It will be interesting to see who gets PCs to take off again, but personally I don't think it is going to be Google.

Definitely waiting on the Hasi here too. But my mom and my wife like iPads for most things. The last time my wife saw me with a new MBP (late 2008), she decided she wanted one for herself. We'll see whether she adds or removes from the trend line :)

Tablets are killing Laptops for most people.

As for the people that need Desktop computers.. I imagine most of them learn towards the PC side of things.

Ah, so these results include Windows 8 tablets but not iPads. That would explain Apple's decline.
