Not Surprised

This is what happens when you start making crappy hardware, cant swap batteries, cant change other parts not only on the laptops but on the desktops. The new mac pro is what it looks like to the pro market which is a trash can. Apple got to big for themselves and the fall as begun.

Apple needs to add back the option to Upgrade/Replace components . Like Ram and the HDD/SDD back to its lines , thats the reason ill be going back to a PC for my new desktop at the end of the year,

That may satisfy your needs but as a whole I don't think that's the reason for any Apple computer sales declines. Last 24 months of history has shown that those things you mentioned just aren't things many people need.

Gartner's number show Apple underperforming the overall industry in the United States, with the Mac maker posting a 4.3% decline in shipments compared to the 1.4% decline in the overall market.

Is anyone really surprised? There hasn't been a significant/meaningful update (let alone a price drop) to the MBP in about 1.5 years.

Do you get kicks flaming Apple forums much?

Hardly a shocker...

Most people use the internet for facebook or reading, videos (RE: consuming content)... why would they buy a $1,000 MacBook Air when they can get an iPad Mini for $300?

Uh, I dunno, maybe someone, somewhere in this world might want a laptop.....to do work maybe??? Nah, guess not. Who would do that? :p

Apple's computers, especially the retina macbook pros are build with such good quality that consumers dont need to upgrade every other year, but rather every 3-5 years. Makes sense

3) Apple PCs last longer due to build quality and the quality of OS integration. PCs, especially the <1000 laptop, are built to be obsolete in 18 months.

Ah.... No.

That's just pure FUD.

How about this: the creative genius - the person that could make you think you needed more sand while standing in the middle of the desert - is gone. In his place is someone with expertise in supply chain management. The old way of doing business may make money, but it may not be what is needed to increase earnings the way they used to be.

Apple is also slooooooow to make changes when it comes to any of their products. Add the fact that what is in the pipeline is super secret and people move along while waiting. Some of that moving along is to a cheap tablet. Once people realize they can have a facebook, youtube, etc. app on a cheap tablet why go back?

Um, no the whole PC market is down, not just apple. And if Apple's figures included the iPad the numbers would be better.

Apple needs to quit the trend towards proprietary hardware and non user upgradeable computers or the slide will continue.

I think they expected this. Their most aggressive bets have been on the idevices. Anyway I think they expected a downturn in the PC market to affect them at some point. You could have probably modeled this further out with a bit of basic calculus to look at their growth acceleration rates against product release cycles and overall market conditions. I haven't done so because it's not interesting enough to me to put in a lot of time. If I was invested in Apple, I would have done so already. At the very least I would have closely examined numbers shown by others.

What makes them obsolete? I've read this argument before, yet no one has mentioned anything beyond that statement.

4) Corporate PC purchases have been on hold for 2 years waiting for Win8.... And once seeing Win8, they are now installing Win7;-), and replacing old hardware in the process.
What corporation? Corporations are generally conservative and wouldn't jump on the newest OS as soon as it hits. They aren't going to wait 2 years for a new OS due to semi-fixed purchasing cycles tied to amortization periods. On computer equipment it's 5 years over which they're written down to salvage value unless you take them as a section 179 writeoff, which is really structured by the size of the purchase.

My laptops, so far...

HP Pavilion dv6729ca (03/2008-06/2010): After about a year, started showing wear (keyboard keys, scratches, creaking, loose bits. Soon after the one year mark, I started having all kinds of issues with it, from poor performance and freezing all the way to failure to even POST. Required SEVEN repairs and THREE new motherboards in the second half of its life.

Laptop expired before it's 3 year warranty did...

Dell StudioXPS 1647 (06/2010-04/2012): Sound was always glitchy, and had the odd graphics glitch on battery power. Battery life would noticeably decrease with every cycle, and calibration did nothing to fix this. All of these issues, I was told, were "normal" for this model. Two attempted (warranty) repairs failed to change anything... At approx 1 1/2 years of age, it started suffering from a hard lock-up issue, which would occur more and more often.

Retired short of 2 years old, sue to being unusable at this point. Needed new motherboard at $500+ cost.

Apple MacbookPro 12 late 2011 (04/2012-present): *knocks on wood* Essentially flawless, so far. No problems; excellent build quality.

So what explains the rest of the PC decline then? Or the major success of the iPad?

To tablet or not to tablet

These numbers don't include iPads. However, they do include Windows 8 tablets. So, we're back to apple and oranges.

Because Apple computers are just too damn expensive these days. Maybe if they make a cheaper version of MBP like they are iPhone they will sell more computers.

When they didn't put a better screen on the 11" MBA they lost a sale to me. Making the batteries last longer was not what I wanted. I would have gladly given up the extra battery power for a retina screen. Call it a MBA Pro to justify the price. I will buy it. I don't like waiting but I need OSX in the small form factor.

I will just have to wait (hopefully only one more year).

i'm not surprise

apple really is screwing up new products like new Mac Pro
There is nothing Pro about it its just very fast mac mini with out being able to upgrade this unit its no longer a pro package
more people will look for alternatives that will be easily upgradable with drives and processor options in one package
with out multiple boxes on your desk. need to add 3 drives it looks like you will need to add 3 boxes on your desk
apple please wake up

As was stated on 9to5 Mac, other companies count their windoze tablets in their PC number, Apple's are not.

It doesn't make any sense that Apple would be lagging the overall market for these products!

Apple can't be expected to increase sales when they have so little to sell. For example;

No up-to-date full-tower, mid-tower or mini-tower computers, at all.

One of the mini's most talked about issues is the lack GPU power. OK, so the mini will remain a laptop in a box with an embedded GPU. There are none available with Haswell, HD4600, Iris or Iris Pro. What informed buyer would purchase a new mini right now?

The iMacs have been compromised down to buy it, use it and throw it away, especially the 21.5 inch. Sure people buy them but the more enthusiastic users who want to add storage and RAM my choose something else.

No one is sure whether there will be a Haswell MacBook Pro, meaning the ones with optical drives, replaceable RAM, replaceable storage and a real Ethernet port. There are however Haswell W8 laptops available right now with all of those things and more.

Besides high cost the video power issue keeps coming up for the MacBook Pros with Retina just like for the minis. The 13 in rMBP really needs Iris. Since they're not here there is nothing to buy right now.

I agree. These aren't boom years, people don't have anywhere near as much money to spend on premium computers. Apple's prices have been gradually rising, especially so since they axed the cheaper plastic MacBook. We seem to have had less price cuts under Cook. The Air is great that it's so thin and portable, the entry level £849 price is good for a ultrabook, but that's not what the masses want, they don't really care about the thickness, they care about the price. A thicker plastic MacBook would be significantly cheaper to make.

It's all very well saying Apple makes the most profit, which might be true in the phone arena, but here I'm not so sure, if the volume decreases enough then even Apple's 50% margins won't keep the overall profits going up. They've got 10 times the profit buffer of other PC manufacturers, and in times of austerity, cheap things sell, expensive don't. The perceived value of the Mac isn't quite what it was either, imo, more reason to reduce margins and increase sales.

Says the guy with a 15" MBP Thunderbolt, A Retina MBP, An AppleTV, a 24" iMac and iPad. All of which have little to no upgradability, but you gave Apple some nice cash to have them. Your post is hypocritical against your own purchasing interests. :p

...

People arent convinced they dont need a dvd drive yet and those that are buy ipads
