The iWatch is actually going to be announced as the next generation of "iPod".

iPod is simply evolving into a wearable wrist device.

Hence why U2 will be present to unveil it.

Sounds very much like the majority of music nowadays, regardless of the medium :D

There's a lot of good music about today, and like all good music it doesn't sell massive stadium tours or get played on "hits" radio.

U2 are popular music, their fans would be listening to Beiber and the like if they were kids today...U2 were our generations "safe but slightly edgy" music choice.

U2 are for lazy people who want the radio hits and can't be bothered to dig any deeper, just like all the pap that's played on the radio today.

LOL. Growing up I really did not like U2. I was more of a Depeche Mode/New Order/Sisters of Mercy guy. I hated the Beatles and the Stones with a passion. Obviously as I got older that changed thankfully.

On a separate note:

Nice to see some else on this board sharing similar tastes in music back when I was in college.

Should be a great event regardless of U2 or skinny girls on a catwalk - just didn’t think apple was the type of company that needed a big top to showcase their products.

We don't even know what the event is going to be like yet. And musicians playing music at Apple events isn't something new.

I had the same thought. And it makes sense; the standalone music player form factor is kinda played out. The wearable device will be called iPod.

Wow! I finally caught up to the end of this thread.

My 2 cents: U2 is popular with those who grew up listening to them during their teens/young adulthood and that is normal. Today's younger generation think they are senior citizens and the real senior citizens grew up on Beatles, Stones and Doors, not U2.

Personally I never cared much for U2. Every generation has their popular bands, but when you mature yet remain emotionally attached to a group that you grew up with, you fail to keep an open mind about how good or bad the music might be. I grew up listening to the Beatles, but today I can't stand to listen to most of their stuff because it isn't the kind of music that stands the test of time. There are a few worthy pieces but in general mostly pop junk.

Today, most of the music I like is by bands/singer song writers that I have never heard of before.

Not a huge fan of U2 but respect most of their early stuff.

Suprised they don't have Calvin Harris / Zedd or some since edc seems to be so popular with the young people they are trying to gain on.

If I had my choice Tool would be playing there but that's just me haha.

Specifically, they said they're not playing at Apple's iPhone event. Evasive wording - my guess is they see it as playing Apple's iPod event. Either way, I do believe their more substantial relevance here is that their new album will be available in high quality audio. And maybe something about Project Red or other donations/charities?

U2 is an iconic band, I am really surprised so may here have no appreciation for them.

Go listen to Boy or War, or The Joshua Tree...

They ARE iconic. Those ARE amazing albums. But that's not the point. They haven't made interesting music in decades. Few do so late in life. If the Rolling Stones showed up and played tracks from Their Satanic Majesty's Request I'd shiitake a brick. And if they showed up and played Steel Wheels? I'd ask someone to pummel me with a brick.

The same with U2. If they play Zoo TV or earlier, I'm in. But that won't happen. They're gonna play some boring ass new shiitake and WHAT IM HOPING FOR IS AMAZING PRODUCTS, NOT A FUUUCKIN ALBUM PROMOTION.

Now, I bet that's why you "hate" U2, because you're just bitter and cynical

No, I hate them because Bono is too damn full of himself and because their music is annoyingly pretentious. It keeps giving me the feeling of them constantly nudging me and saying "Hey mate, isn't that such an intelligent deep meaningful song?"

I am a tree-hugging liberal socialist who eats organic food. My musical tastes formed in the eighties. I actually bring up topics like "world hunger" in casual conversations. I like guitar-based pop/rock music. I should LOVE U2. But no. No. Really no. They did something good for the world. Great. Thank you. But still no.

But enough whining. My TV has a mute button for a reason.

U2 IS the most overrated band in the world and altough I like only a handful of the music they made from time to time, I dislike Bono. However instead of whining if we focus on the article there's an important point we're missing. It says u2 will be used for an unveiling of the device. My guess is the wearable. So could it be like while the band plays we get to see their vitals on the giant screen and what the iWatch is capable of whilst performing? U2 benefits from the hype and coverage and Apple show a real world application of the product.

However it would make more sense if they did the same thing with athletes instead of musiciand and that construction was a gym of some sort. Btw although that construction being a mini home for home automation demo purposes make sense, I don't understand why Apple would put such an emphasis on home automation at the keynote. Especially when other companies like Nest and Phillips are making products for it, Apple is just providing the kit.

Historic announcement: Apple are buying out Microsoft and will release a whole range of affordable laptops.

Imagine that.
