** UPDATED POST KEYNOTE **

So here we are again, the time of year we start off by feeling more than happy with our current phones with no pressing need to upgrade, but by the time you've read through the first 10 posts you're ready to throw your money at Apple!

Still a little vague on dates and names (the awful sounding Pro Max!) but that won't stop us getting to 1000 posts before the keynote!

I'll update this with more accurate information as it comes in.

(Times and prices etc will be BST and in Pounds (£) respectively.)

Please consider checking the FAQ section at the bottom of this thread before asking a question. I’ll keep it updated with the most popular questions so that the answers are quick and easy to find.

Latest news

Looking forward to seeing the regulars back on here! You can use this thread to discuss the UK price points, pre-orders and dispatch of the new iPhones, unlocked from Apple and through UK network carriers.

When the time comes please post to let everyone know if you were able to get your pre-order through to Apple, and if you had any problems. Let us know when your online order status changes - e.g. Order Processing, Preparing for Shipment, Dispatched and eventually Delivered. Last year it was useful for people to update their signatures to display their current status to avoid the endless posts asking for 'whats your status?'

Feel free to discuss cases and accessories too!

FAQs

When is the Keynote?

The 2019 keynote will be Tuesday 10th September 12 at 18:00(BST) @ the Steve Jobs Theater at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California.

Where can I watch the Keynote?

The Keynote can be streamed online on apple.com here.
The event will also be live streamed on YouTube

Where can I watch a replay of the keynote?

The replay of the keynote can be watched online

There is also a spoiler free link to the replay here. I usually bookmark this page to go directly to later on in the day to watch the announcement without hearing/reading anything else.

What time do pre-orders start?

** Please note there's a change to the pre-order launch **

Pre-orders usually start the friday following the keynote, so that would assume be either:
  • Friday, September 13th at 13:00(BST)

When is the official launch?

When there are no delays in production etc, models are usually available one week after pre-orders start. If this continues to be the case then it wold be:
  • Friday, September 20th
Should I pre-order from the desktop store, or mobile app?
Historically the app is has been more stable when pre-orders first start, compared to the desktop store. Honestly I've never had much luck in the last few years of ordering to get the first batch of phones.. I've given up trying to guess!

How do I pre-order and join iPhone Upgrade Programme?

You will have 2 options, either as an existing member or new.

Existing Members
as an existing member you can check if you are eligible to upgrade and if so, go ahead and reserve.

New Members
You can reserve, if available, the phone of your choice

you will not have to pay or use a card during this process as it is a reservation for an instore appointment. Remember that acceptance onto IUP is subject to application and credit check etc.

the following are screen showing the order flow from the iPhone 11 launch.

and then the store followed by the time (out of what is available)

then its a case of turning up, checking and taking the appropriate ID needed and going through the application!

there is also a join now link from the main IUP page: https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program

Can I reserve for collection in store?

With previous launches there has ben an option to reserve for in-store pickup. After the official release day there has also been an option to check stock at individual stores and reserve.

How do I know if stores have certain stock available?

iStockNow also have great tracking and notifications for stock and also cover non-apple retailers.

Will my iPhone order be delivered on the Launch Date?

This will all depend on any stock constraints. If you are lucky to get in a pre-order and the estimated delivery shows for the launch date, then you will get your phone on that day. If the shipping dates start to push out then you will have to unfortunately wait. Apple's estimated delivery dates are pretty accurate but they have had recent history in bringing forward some orders which has missed the initial launch day release

Is there a limit to how many iPhones I can order?

Apple typically imposes a limit of ordering 2 iPhones per Apple ID.

Will my order be delayed if I order a case/Apple Care with the iPhone?

In the past, people have experienced delays in receiving their orders if they order any accessories along with the phone. It is recommended that you order the iPhone separate to any accessories to avoid the potential delay.

Once I pre-ordered, Apple placed a hold on the funds in my account but released it a few days later without taking the money. Is there something wrong with my order?

When you pre-order from Apple and pay by credit or debit card, Apple will at some point place a ‘hold’ on the amount with your card company. This checks you've got the funds, and stops you spending them. However, a hold only lasts a few days, after which time your card company will automatically make the funds available to you to spend again. When you see this happen, it is nothing to worry about, it DOES NOT mean Apple has cancelled your order. Apple will not take the money out of your account until the day of shipping.

Apple has taken funds buy my order still shows 'preparing for dispatch'?
Pre-orders which are due for launch day delivery will usually see a change of order status to dispatched the day before delivery. Launch day stock is typically sitting at Apple's logistics partner, Syncreon, in Hinkley. The devices are handed over to a local courier (DPD or UKMail) from around the afternoon onwards on the day before. From this point your tracking would become active.

What courier will my order be delivered by?

On past releases, people who have been lucky enough to snag a launch day pre-order are likely to have their orders shipped from Syncreon in Hinkley. These deliveries and then usually handled by UK Mail and UPS.
Orders which have missed the launch date typically come direct from factory via UPS.

My order has been shipped with UPS, how can I track it?

On your order page there will be a tracking number starting with ‘1Z’, simply copy and paste it into the tracking box on the UPS website and it should display your tracking results. Please note that tracking numbers may take some time to become active.

My order has been shipped with UK Mail, how can I track it?

If your tracking number starts with '309', enter it into the UK Mail Tracking Page. Entering your post code is not required, however if you do enter it then you'll be able to change your delivery date or select to pick your order up at your nearest depot. If your tracking number doesn't start with '309', select the 'Customer reference' option and then enter your tracking details along with your post code. UK Mail should text you with a one hour delivery window, and you can view delivery progress online.

My order has been shipped with Syncreon, how can I track it?

Enter your 'Delivery Number' in the 'Order No/Delivery No' box on the Syncreon tracking page, and your Apple order number (starts with W) in the ‘’Web Order No’’ box. If your tracking number starts with '309' you will then be able to track it to delivery on the UK Mail Tracking Page. Please note that tracking numbers may take some time to become active.

What is iPhone Fast Charging?

The science behind it

  • Watt (W): Total power and capacity of either a battery or an adapter.
  • Amps (A): The current at which power can flow between a charger and a battery.
  • Voltage (V): The amount of power being pushed from an adapter.
When you charge an iPad, iPhone, or computer, you're resupplying its battery (measured in watt-hours) from a power source like a wall outlet, usually via an adapter. That adapter controls how much power you can get (volts) from that outlet, and the speed at which you get it (amps). Those two factors multiplied result in the adapter's total available power.

Remember it's not about total watts — it's all about the amps and voltage. Modern iPhones and iPads support charging up to a current of 2.4A at 5V, while older devices charge around 1A at 5V. To get the best adapter for your device, you want one that charges at the appropriate amps (1-2.4A) while supplying the right amount of voltage.

A 5W iPhone adapter will pull just 1 amp at 5V, for instance, while USB ports on a computer can deliver 0.5-2 amps, and the 12W iPad adapter can deliver up to 2.4 amps.

The new 29W USB-C Adapter is special because it supports 5V charging at 2.4A (~12W), but it also supports USB Power Delivery for compatible devices, which allows them to charge at a much higher voltage (14.5V) and lower amps (2A). Because the amps are lower while the voltage is higher, it's more efficient from an electrical standpoint andoffers more power to devices that can take advantage of the technology.

What do I need for the iPhone?

To get the Optimum Charging times for your iPhone you will need the 29W USB-C charger and a USB-C to lighting Cable.

Its likely that 3rd party chargers and cables would work too.

Wireless Charging

What is iPhone Wireless Charging?

iPhones support wireless charging using the Qi (chee) standard. Qi wireless charging uses inductive charging technology, which involves two coils of copper wire (with a core of iron) - one in the device you are charging (or in a caseattached to that device) and one in a pad or mat on which you lie the device. When you put the two coils next to each other an electromagnetic field is created and that allows electricity to be passed between the two coils. While the two devices need to be touching or within very close proximity, the coils can be sealed within the devices.

The iPhone supports up to 7.5W for fast charging, but the latest Qi 1.2 standard actually offers up to 15W.

A suitable wireless charging device would need:

  • Qi - sounds obvious but it needs to support Qi
  • 7.5W of power. Some devices out there support less
  • Wall adapter - make sure the wall adapter you use with the wireless pad supports the speed you are after. A 7.5W pad with a 5W wall adapter will only charge at 5W.
  • Future Proof - the current Qi standard (1.2) supports charging at 15W. Interesting to see if this years iPhone will support charging above 7.5W You might want to buy a wireless pod that supports this in case.

Would a higher powered Charger damage non fast charge devices?
The short answer is no. Modern devices are built to only accept specific amp levels, so even if you plug your iPhone into an unsupported adapter, you'll only get the bare minimum the adapter supports (either the 5V/1A or 12V/2.4A charging spec).

[doublepost=1565867409][/doublepost]how are people set for this years iPhone? disgusted by the big square camera bump? Not bothered and will stick with what you've got?

Personally being on the upgrade program, its a bit of a no brainer for me to change.. I'm not expecting prices to differ this year. Also feel that pre-orders should be plentiful again.

I'm not overly fussed by the need for 3x optical zoom.. I'd love to see an equivalent of the Pixels Night Sight and see the improvements in low light.

I've never gone for the plus/max sized phone before. Tempted this year but maybe stick to the devil I know?!
I was the same but I'm glad I went with the Xs Max. I'm used to the size and it's not that big after some time.

I have a Max and at the same price point, they need to deliver the goods for me to buy a new Max. And I don't see it. That's the trap they have created for themselves. I understand trading volume for profit margin but when you charge an ultra premium price you need to make it worthwhile for the customer. And they aren't close in my book.

Hopefully Apple have a few surprises to make me want to upgrade my XS Max on IUP. ATM just tempted to see out the remaining IUP payments and start again next year

Nice work Jinjin and I am back but not that I have ever been away.
Every year I say that i won't upgrade but I always do and join the fun of the 8am UK pre-orders known as "Frantic chaos". So I shall be with you guys all the way.

Will be reluctantly upgrading my 7 this year.

Meh line up, no 128GB base and still shipping with a 5V charger.

Personally, I’ve tried many times over the years to adjust to the plus size (back in the days of the sexy jet black scratch magnet of the 6+) to the Xs Max last year. I returned it within a week and went back to the smaller sibling.

Not a one handed phone for me and always conscious of dropping in when I tried to use it as one. Have ended up putting it in case too which adds to the weight/size.

The Xs size is perfect for me, and Xr size oled would have worked too if it ever came out

Hoping it will be released 20th September as that’s when my annual upgrade will be free by then on EE...

Top thread as always

I’m thinking this will be a breathtaking camera...it better be if it’s the main features for the upgrade.

Mentioned it above but I’d love to see a pixel night sight mode for low light shot. Think we’re getting more optical zoom instead

Recent rumour doing the rounds suggests 128GB will in fact be the base storage this year.
I will be very surprised if that’s the case becoz it will hurt sales of the 256GB upgrade option.
128GB is a sweet spot while 64GB is rather small so most would of paid the extra for the mid tier option last year

Good to see this thread starting again. Thanks to @Jinjin for taking the time to set it up. I won’t be participating in the fun this year as my XS Max should be good for another 3-4 years - never kept a phone so long, but never paid so much for one either! None of the rumoured upgrades are of interest to me, although if the camera upgrade was at least 10x zoom I might have been rather tempted. Anyway good luck to all who preorder.

Like most years I’ve been saying I wouldn’t upgrade this time and would stick with my Max. However I’m seriously considering opting for the 11R (or whatever it’s called). Always found the XS Max a little too unwieldy and could reduce my monthly payments significantly.

Ultimately I’ll probably depend on the camera. Hopefully it gets the same ultra wide angle and improved sensor rather than a telephoto.
