My initial first impressions of the hands on & a few opinions...
Hardware:
Both the silver and gold look better in 12 Pro Max form than 12 Pro. That silver polished band looks unreal and just pops in the larger size. I am still going with the gold colour as it looks so premium but I did have to second look silver! The larger scale definitely adds more wow factor for both of those two colours.
Pacific blue will likely be the most popular choice as it's new and looks just as stunning in Max form as on the 12/12 Pro. Classy colour.
Graphite also looks superb in the larger size, something about the stealth look that appeals.
Size-wise the Max definitely doesn't look too big although I'm used to Android monsters!
Excited about the new Max cameras, especially the larger sensor to see how Apple have improved the already great photo and video experience. Especially for night photos! Also curious to see what LiDAR will actually bring.
Battery on the Max will easily provide the best life out of all 4 12's and that's important for camera video use, media viewing, gaming etc. Hopefully it's inline with the 11 Pro Max battery life which was stellar.
The Mini form will really appeal to those wanting close to the old 5/5S form factor again, it will draw in buyers wanting an old school phone size at a great price.
MagSafe is cool and will appeal to the masses to get them into wireless charging but I'll personally wait for the V2 version or Apple to release it's own watch/iPhone wireless charger.
Whether you opt for Mini or Max today the new industrial design is arguably the best that Apple has ever given us.
Software:
Apple royally nailed the iPhone hardware this year. Apple iOS software is a bit of a negative from my view. Arriving back from the Android world over this last year, I would have liked to see Apple optimise iOS for all 6.7 inches of Max screen real estate. This would allow for more icons, multi-tasking, split-screen analysis and running two apps at once etc. Basically more diversity with Apple iOS software is now required.
In fact the iOS could or should be optimised across all three screens - the Mini, 12/12 Pro & 12 Pro Max.
I know Auto Layout adjusts for all apps coherently on each screen and adapts for a consistent user experience but Apple could definitely do better with their iOS software design. The reviews on Monday may consider this as a flaw on the Max compared to Android equivalents.
Also 120hz screen refresh rate or minimum 90hz instead of standard 60hz should definitely be default this year on all 12's. iOS does a grand job of smoothing but, yeah, I'm gonna miss my 90hz refresh rate I'm now used to.
But, for me, I reckon the new camera software will make up for iOS user/screen deficiencies so really hoping Apple's software utilises the larger sensor on the Max etc. LiDAR software will be interesting too, hopefully not a gimmick.
Personally really excited about AppleRaw & Dolby HDR video recording ability. By all intents and purposes, the new Max camera with software should out class the Google Pixel this year, even for those night and night sky shots.
