My issue with Apple Care+ for the iPhone is doesn’t cover scuffs and scrapes iirc? You can get the front glass or back replaced if they get smashed I believe with Apple Care but in all honesty they are probably the hardest bits on the phone (at least I think they are?).
“Oops, I seem to have dropped my phone from my loft, down onto my concrete drive, 3 stories down”

If you use contactless, don‘t you get charged the Oyster rates anyway?

I think so. I think it’s more about having so many extra transactions appear on my account history and statements as they’re individual daily payments. When you use an Oyster card at least for me it’s one transaction a month as I take out a monthly pass for zone 4 to 2.

Everyone is careful with their new phones though, but accidents happen and that’s where AppleCare + comes in.

Convenience, speedy repairs and low repair costs win out for some people.
Never damaged any of my previous iPhones (going back all the way to the original). Since iPhone 6 onwards however, I’ve always used a case though so perhaps that’s why I’ve not needed it.

For me it’s another £249 on top of the device cost (which Apple have increased this time round as well) for something I’m unlikely to need. I’m not against the idea of Apple Care as I’ve got it for my iPad Air but £249 (plus the charge for each incident/damage) seems too high imo. The iPad Air at £69 is reasonable (different devices/tech etc. I know).

I remember an incident a few years back when I was on a trip to Paris. My phone went off in the middle of the night. When I went to grab it I knocked the lamp over and it fell on my phone creating a tiny crack in the screen ( I didn’t have a screen protector on ).

Luckily I had Apple Care Plus. I called Apple the next day and they express shipped me a new phone and then after I got it and set it up I sent the old phone back to them. It’s that kind of piece of mind that makes Apple Care Plus worth it to me even if I never end up using it.

Apple employee already put the exchange in motion on his side, and he told me that for an exchange, it couldn't happen in an Apple store, because they would refund me and I would have to order again (so basically an iPhone on October...).

UPS has to give me a proof I handed the phone (I guess he scans the ticket and give me a copy or something), so I will ask the driver before handing anything to him. I hope it will be OK!

UPS guy came and took my parcel. Now, we wait.... Really hope Apple will send the new phone before October !

I got Apple Care+ this year, normally never get it. Not so much worried about smashes or even theft it’s more about hardware failure.

I had a major hardware failure on the 13 pro max through no fault of mine. Phone literally just stopped working. Apple replaced the circuit board and repaired it within the standard 12 month warranty but I question what would have happened if it was outside warranty?

Same people who damage their phones probably the same type to lose them along with their wallet/keys. Careless.

Exactly, without that, you would be screwed (no phone) and worrying about a repair bill for your new £1000+ device.

I’m risk averse and use my phone for business, so AppleCare+ is a no brainier for me.

I think the apple care with theft and loss is good value. I used to have mobile phone insurance with my bank account but changed bank and no longer have it. If you look at separate mobile phone insurance I’m sure it would be at least a tenner a month. Well apples version is barely any more than that and you get an apples service for accidental damage too. It’s a no brainier for me, even if I haven’t claimed on phone insurance for probably 10 years, I have broken an screen in the distant past

Then take iPhone payments which lowers the month payments and you can still sell the phone to pay Barclays off

For me IUP is kinda pointless when they do the 24 interest free credit
you can also sign up to Barclays online whereas you have to go in a store for IUP as far as I know. Not sure why they still run IUP tbh!

I had never broke an iPhone (or lost my keys or wallet) since I started with the 5S but after 8 flawless years my 12PM slipped through my hand and smashed the back.

I've also been to a lot of gigs, festivals and large cities where pickpocketing and theft is common and luckily never been a victim but it only takes one time.

Having an accident through your own fault or not once in a while doesn't make you careless.

Exactly. I baby my stuff and have had an iPhone since the 3G. All I have handed down to my wife in perfect condition apart from once when I knocked my 6S off my desk and it fell onto my computer desk leg and the screen cracked at the bottom.

Doesn’t matter how careful or protective you are of your stuff, accidents do happen.

Using both of your examples, you have broken one phone in say 5+ years. If you had been paying Apple Care at say £249 every year for that period then that’s £1245, which you could’ve used to buy a new iPhone to replace the one you smashed (if that does indeed unfortunately occur).

It’s like when I was paying for an extended warranty with BMW on my car for several years at nearly 1k annually, not using it and realising I could’ve just set that money aside in my bank account to use if a big car repair bill cropped up.

I think the main benefit of Apple Care is the quick replacement especially if you use your phone for business and hassle free customer service from Apple so for some people it’s totally worth it (or if you’re really clumsy and break phones regularly 😳).

I went for Applecare (with Theft and Loss cover) again this year as I go to a lot of gigs / festivals where pickpocketing is rife. A few years ago I had my phone robbed by one of the kids cycling round in North London and had to go through my insurer (Protect My Bubble), which was a faff and they delayed and delayed processing my claim for as long as possible. That experience has led me to go AC in recent years.

AC+ is like an extended warranty - you can either pay it and you get the benefit of a fast recovery or not pay and use the savings (if you actually put the money aside) and just get a repair or a new phone.

The scan and shop terminal at my local Extra just yesterday threw a "contactless limit exceeded" error when trying to use ApplePay for about £190. Fortunately had physical card in my Apple Wallet for chip 'n PIN. Worst is Morrisons, their tills often don't work at all with AmEx and Apple Pay (despite displaying the Apple Pay and AmEx logos). Best implementation of course is Waitrose, faultless since the launch of ApplePay.
M&S have a faultless Apple Pay too. One of the launch retailers.

I have a 1TB 14 Pro Max so yes I have AppleCare+, it would be quite a few accident free years without it to save the cost of one accident.
Well you did go around 7 years without an accident already 😉😛

I think when you’ve spent that much on the phone then yeah an extra £249 is probably less relevant but when Apple Care is nearly a quarter of the price of the phone (such as a base spec Pro), it seems high imo.

No I didn’t get the payment yesterday. They sent the bounced email about an hour after dropping off about 5 of us are in the same boat now, waiting for Tuesday.

Im in the same boat, dropped off my iphone 12 pro max at a smart kiosk at lunchtime on Saturday and got a bounced payment email. I triple checked my bank details and theres no issue my side. Everything is correct so I have updated my details again just to be sure. I spoke to live chat and emailed them. Going to try Live chat again tomorrow morning to check what is going on.

If you check Trust Pilot and filter by smart Kiosk theres a load of reviews on there from Saturday and before who have had bounced payments. Apparently some say it takes weeks before they get payment so I am a little bit concerned. But hopefully they send us all payment quickly. Do keep us all updated those who had bounced payments and let us know if you get payment. Ill update too.
