I wonder (I have no knowledge) if, seeing as all the actual networks have the ability to offer eSIMs, there isn’t a technically simple way to transfer that ability over?

Like I said, I have no idea whatsoever what is required to be installed/implemented to be able to offer eSIMs.

From what I understand it is quite a change technically for the networks. They also need to decide the kind of distribution of the eSims. That would be the job of the MVNO and not the host network.

I’ve been out of telecoms for 10 years, but I did work on a lot of the core infrastructure.

From a network point of view, you’re interested in things like the IMSI and encryption keys and you probably don’t care too much whether it’s stored on a SIM or in the secure area if the device. Managing that and getting that data into the device securely is a matter of your mediation services that sit between your customer management platforms and the network and that’s just IT.

You might want to allocate different IMSI ranges to each MVNO to make moving them easier if they decide to switch from (say) EE to O2 as Virgin did. But otherwise on the network side, I think it’s just going to be different APNs, probably a more limited set of bearer services if you’re not allowing 5G access and really not that hard to manage because it’s just different data in a very big and fast database.

I think it all depends on how much of the customer integration side the MVNOs do and how much they pass off onto the network operators to manage for them. If they’re running a very light weight customer service solution, the MVNOs may not have the ability to integrate to the standard required by the network operators.

Not biting with the esims just yet u less forced too. Pop old sim into new phone and not worry about for a year - works fine for me.

I can’t see UK or the EU moving to to esim only iPhones unless Apple has done the prep work with the networks (physical and virtual) already and they’re all prepped to offer esim.. just seen zero evidence that’s the case.

Anyone know if the US switch to esim last year excluded any networks out there from offering their service on iPhones?

I’m sure there’ll also be some obscure EU directive restricting this

So this year I have a dilemma.

I am not kidding myself I am going to pre order the iPhone 15 Pro Max (if that is it's name)

But I have a £400 Curry's voucher burning a hole in my pocket and I'm tempted to go there instead of direct with Apple this year. Trouble is I have heard horror stories from the past couple of years of them not delivering on pre orders.
I’ve preordered via Curry’s the last 2 years and both years got my phone delivered by dpd on launch day.
I’m doing the same this year (if I upgrade)
Only thing that will stop me upgrading this year is if the 15 is esim only as I’m now on Voxi.

Anyone bought from John Lewis? I have £150 JL vouchers so would be nice to buy from them. Anyone who did, did you get it on launch day?

I’d say that’s the exception, rather then the rule.

Every year, we advise people not to do it and every year people get let down.

Check out

Has details of the different retailers. John Lewis you can only order on launch day and if your local store is lucky to have them in stock you can collect.

Think we’ve been able to do pre pre orders late on in the evening of keynote

It was late in the day after the keynote. Can’t tell if the time stamp is BST or where I currently am which is 3 hours ahead

I guess I could have been awake catching up on all the posts on the thread!

The event was on the 7th so this was next day - 8th. Or maybe delayed email as just saw it say 1am.

I thought it was next day.

Have been reading more around the interwebby and there are lots of rumours of France and modes that are despatched in France which are most of Europe and UK would be eSim only for iPhone 15.

Reading some Reddit threads Apple didn’t care whether the MVNOs supported it or not. That was down to the MNOs allowing the MVNOs to use the technology. If it is because the MNOs won’t allow it in the UK I am sure that the CMA will get involved.

LycaMobile are MVNO using EE with full eSim support however they don’t have Wi-Fi calling or visual voicemail. I expect they are limited by either EE or just to keep prices low.

This news could be bad unless Vodafone roll out eSIM to Voxi quick sharp. Looks like 3 has no intention to roll it out to Smarty.

I’m with VOXI and really happy with my deal and use visual voicemail and WiFi calling. I also like the option of taking out a physical sim to use in another phone.

Same here I'm on Voxi, everything unlimited for £10 a month, I'd be happy to move to eSIM for it if Voxi supported it.
Looking on Three, I’d not get a better deal than I’m currently on and it looks like they only offer eSIM on a limited range of tariffs.
