But he will be stuck in a very expensive 24 month agreement so not exactly a win for them in my opinion.

Yep Precisely that.

Ofcourse, he is stuck with a long 24 month 'Loan Repayment' and there is other ways of getting a 'cheaper loan' of 890..... but hey, not everyone thinks the same way!

A lot of these people are either committing fraud (e.g. taking out a contract using a stolen identity and then flogging the phone) or have other incentives, such as getting a work phone they don't want or need.

People buying are mad: if seller stops the payments you're screwed, and there is no guarantee it will arrive on time.

The RRP is £1149, also if they already have an EE Sim only deal they just saved money.
