The £35/ month plan more than covers my usage. I might even put one of my phones on a simplicity plan and *save* money (even after having to buy an iPhone 4 at PAYG prices).
What is a simplicity plan?

Any carriers still doing unlimited data

Hi, I've had O2 since the original iphone came out and now I'm out of contract and getting ready to get the new iphone.

I recently moved flat and in my new place I can't get much signal inside -- it's in Central London and I have good bars and 3G standing right outside and then zero signal standing right inside -- probably due to construction materials (prefab). I was considering vodafone because you can get that signal multiplier thing for at home but was concerned about the limited data plan.

Is there any way you can tell how much data you usually use on 02? Are there any carriers who will be left still doing unlimited data? Any other good options -- ie is Orange/TMobile better indoors?

Thanks.

Rebecca

Get used to this folks....

...say goodbye to unlimited plans. Thanks to all those 2%'s who hogged all the bandwidth.

Silly Europeans... We AMERICANS had our data plans castrated WEEKS AGO... Welcome to the party... :D

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I hate how AT&T gets dictate how the rest of the world useS thier iPhones! Screw this! If thier lousy network is ancient why should the rest of the world suffer?!

I suppose it makes sense

Do we get unlimited plans from our...

  • Electric Utility?
  • Gas Utility?
  • Water Utility?
  • food store?
  • gas for our cars?

No....resources are limited....and it's not fair to those who consume less. The same is true for bandwidth.

500MB really isn't that much, especially when you consider tethering. Back when the benm tethering unlock still worked I was pushing 1.7-1.8GB on AT&T. It sucks for all the carriers to ditch the unlimited plans but it is surely understandable.

I think the UK/Europe will handle this better than the US, since you are used to pay-as-you-go being a legitimate phone service (and pretty effective in my 3 months living in London.)

..Also what about this 20p MMS!

MMS used to be inclusive with text allowance (MMS=3 texts). Are they now scrapping that and charging for contract users? That would add a lot to my bill! I'd have to use Ping or Whatsapp, which aren't great. I want to use my phone without thinking 'that'll cost 20p' or 'am I going over my data allowance'. Not at £35+ at any rate! Bad move O2. Prices should be going down, not up!

Bye bye O2

Me too. No upgrade either, I'm keeping my 3GS contract which ende Dec. 2010 then go on simplicity. When iPhone 5 comes out I will sell my 3GS and go from there.

o2 have really screwed us over on this one, I don't care about their 'priority list' either :p

I'm currently with O2 on a contract that ends next month.
This has little impact on me, as I am expecting to move to Orange anyway.
Their coverage is so much better in the UK!

Is anybody actually planning on staying with O2? Speak up! :p

Well I'm downgrading my tariff from £45 > £40 this month as a direct result, then down to £35 - the missus has an iphone on simplicity £20 so she can have the contract and I'll move to Orange.

I'll also sell my 3GS for roughly £250 on O2recycle so I'm even better off! ;)

I've spreadsheet'd it and it works out £5 a month better off with better coverage, better data allowance.

Job done.

And also have the worst network and worst Indian Call centre of all the networks!

I just recently switched back to 3 and this seems to have improved a great deal recently, both from what people have been saying and my own experiences.

Though to be fair, the only way was up: last time I used them (~3yrs ago? just before the first iPhone) the call centre certainly couldn't have gotten any worse. But they must've realised as it's been a widely noted improvement.

I'll probably only pick contract as a last resort or if it's actually a good deal. Recently I've found that I don't use the phone for voice/text nearly enough to make it value for money, and 24 months at the current pace of development is far too long. I'd prefer to upgrade each new iPhone, rather than every other.
And they probably do still squirm if you try to leave - best advice there is to just send a recorded letter as phoning them will get you nowhere.

Very pleased that it's coming to 3 - up North it's pretty much the only provider that has 3G. Followed by Orange, T-Mobile, Vodavone, O2 in approximately that order of 3G density. I shan't miss O2.

Rebecca

If you go to My O2 online, it will tell you how much data you have used in a month.

I just checked now and I have used 350MB. How, I don't know and I don't do anything heavy duty using 3G. I always try and use WiFi.

I always thought I was a light user for 3G data, so I can imagine this 500MB limit will screw a lot of people over.

Good news from O2 though (I've just been on the phone to them) - if you're on the original "iPhone Simplicity 20" tariff (£20/m, 600 mins, 1200 texts, unlimited 3G data and wifi) they are not changing or restricting existing tariffs.

Just waiting now for PAYG prices to be released...

Its crazy to think before multitasking we had unlimited data plans and now when we finally get multitasking we get unlimited data pulled from under us and in a big way. What is 500mb O2, come on. You could have at least gone with say 1gb as the lowest!

Its terrible that we now have to think before we use our phone for data use, when the unlimited data is what made us all just use the phone as it was meant to be used, I think apple had some part to play in the unlimited data when first launched. (Maybe the contract was, you give everyone unlimited data else you don't get the iPhone on your network. We want people to have the full experience without being hindered by the network data limits)

It’s a shame that I will now have to look at all options and networks to try and come out with the best of a bad situation on data limits from all networks!

How can 3 years ago (even 4 or 5 with T-Mobile) having unlimited data, and now in 2010 we go backwards in a big way!!! Surely we all don't use that much data even when we have unlimited plans.... we pay enough in the contract and outlay for the phone.

While this is in some ways a valid argument, one has to remember that O2 offered unlimited data for pretty much the entire life of the iPhone thus far. Taking it away is gonna be a big hit to anyone who became reliant on their mobile device.

If they never offered unlimited in the first place I doubt there'd be anywhere near the same amount of whinging and I totally understand everyone who is unhappy about it. I'm one of them.

How big of an issue is we'll see in the next few months as people say they are leaving O2 but lets wait out and see how many do.

I will as I'm headed to Canada for a year so I can't comment on what the service will be like.

Personally, I could still live with the cap although I much prefer the thought of having an uncapped service even if I'm never likely to reach the cap anyway.

What is p***ing me off is the other stuff, like charging for MMS where we used to get it out of our free texts bundle.

Yes, before any says it, I know O2 is a business not a charity etc etc, We had it good for so long but now corporate greed seems to be winning over again. What can we squeeze out of people next? Before, I was still giving you a good whack of money every month, but at least I felt I was getting a good deal in return. Doesn't look that way with these new tariffs and I strongly suspect that the tariffs of the other UK providers (probably now all breathing a sigh of relief that O2 have set the precedent) are going to be identical.

As a matter of fact, yes. And, as a more relevant factor, for wired broadband.

As soon as there is a local water shortage, that will change :)

Also, wired broadband is priced in tiers based on local loop speed, so it is not really 'unlimited'. It is metered.
