Who cares about o2. They are a truly awful network in MY opinion.

Can’t way to move, whatever it costs me. Was going to go Orange but now it may be back to T-Mob. I just wonder if they will have visual voicemail?

Yes, I do. We can't get a good internet connection where I live. 512kbps max during the day, drops to 256kb during midday-5pm. Goes off from 5-7pm. So I swear by mobile data.

Get tethering, it offers more data. Or even better buy a MiFi or something.

Haha hilarious that Brits are getting pwned now. I remember in all ATT bashing threads a lot of them were saying how great their UK carriers are. $25 for 200+ minutes, unlimited data plan. (somewhere in that ballpark. I just remember it was 1000x better value for money when they described it)

Oi.. we're still sore over the Boston tea party.. not to mention a certain british company peeing the US paddling pool at the moment..

I've been waiting for O2 costs and I'll be doing my sums tonight. I bought a 3GS as PAYG with an unlimited data bolt on - I feel satisified spending little on calls, SMS or MMS and using 657MB of data over the entire year..

So let me see the value of spending £15/20 each month for a mass of data capacity I won't use and minutes/SMS/MMS that never get hammered either..

I used to have 400 minutes for £17 a month on a 12 month contract. Prior to my iPhone i had a £35 contract with 1200 minutes. Now I'm going to struggle to keep onto my current iPhone contract!

Governments really need to step in and put some regulations on cell phone companies. They're doing their best to rape their customers wherever and whenever they can! And we just sit idly by and let it happen because we depend on these devices so much!

Not defending O2 as their coverage is s***e anyway (lucky if you can find a signal often enough to manage to download 250MB in a month never mind 500!) but was it actually "unlimited"? Usually they say that, but have a "fair usage policy" of about the same as the average cap anyway. Same with ISPs.

Do we get unlimited plans from our...

  • Electric Utility?
  • Gas Utility?
  • Water Utility?
  • food store?
  • gas for our cars?

No....resources are limited....and it's not fair to those who consume less. The same is true for bandwidth.

Okay but when you go .5kw over on your electric usage, or 20g over on your water usage are you zonked with an abusively high 'overage fee' _OR_ do you just pay a FAIR price per gallon or watt or gas or whatever and there's no such thing as 'going over'? Like ... for example if you used 55g of gas are you automatically charged to 100 since you went over the 50g 'cap'?

Three should offer wicked data plans. :p

My Three contract will be finished just about with iPhone 5 is released, which is good.

Only 12 more months of HTC Hero despair.

It still won't fix Three's rather poor coverage in some areas - I have difficulty keeping a 3G signal at home (London) and on the train through to London Bridge. Sometimes it falls back to Orange's network as they have a sharing scheme.

Good news from O2 though (I've just been on the phone to them) - if you're on the original "iPhone Simplicity 20" tariff (£20/m, 600 mins, 1200 texts, unlimited 3G data and wifi) they are not changing or restricting existing tariffs.

Just waiting now for PAYG prices to be released...

this is what i wanted to hear!:D

i think the pay and go will be more than the 3GS though:(

Cools so I can just take out my sim and stick it in the new iphone and I'm away....cept doesnt the new iphone use micro sim????

MMS used to be inclusive with text allowance (MMS=3 texts). Are they now scrapping that and charging for contract users? That would add a lot to my bill! I'd have to use Ping or Whatsapp, which aren't great. I want to use my phone without thinking 'that'll cost 20p' or 'am I going over my data allowance'. Not at £35+ at any rate! Bad move O2. Prices should be going down, not up!

I was thinking the same. I would rather have 500 SMS a month and if you send a MMS that will be 4 SMS used, than unlimited SMS and charge 4p per MMS sent.

I also use Ping! 2 and WhatsApp as well as other apps that need to be connected but thought used little data. Now I have to be wary how long I'm on them for.

O2 have gone completely backwards with this.

O2 had a choice here:

1. To be able to proudly say "we offer our customers one of the best iPhone tariffs anywhere in the World, users in other countries can only look on in envy"

or

2. To think "hey, how come operators in other countries are able to screw their customers more than we thought we could? If they can get away with it then let's start shafting ours now as well"

Very sad.

Wow...way to screw it up O2! But I have a nasty feeling that the other companies will fall in. I'm currently with T-mobile, and was going to switch to O2 before I found out that they were carrying the iPhone 4 (though the upgrade team did allude to that when they called me last month). Now I'm gonna stay with T-mobile, and hope that they continue with the unlimited data, though I'm not holding my breath considering their merge with Orange. Possibly my 3+ years of custom might be able to swing me a £5/month discount or data upgrade...We'll see.

NoExpectations - data usage (not bandwidth) is not a physical, unsustainable commodity. As long as we're paying for network maintainence then we should be able to use the bandwidth as much as we like, regardless of our price plan. I imagine that the profit margins on phone contracts are rediculous - this is not a move to safeguard the network, its to line the shareholders pockets more. Welcome to capitalism!

Oh, and I don't know about you, but I pay a fixed rate for 'unlimited' water, as well as one for home broadband!

Google micro sim cutters... they are cheap and provided you are careful easy enough to use.

As soon as there is a local water shortage, that will change :)

Heh, perhaps. Or maybe there will just be hosepipe bans...

Also, wired broadband is priced in tiers based on local loop speed, so it is not really 'unlimited'. It is metered.

We're with Virgin, on their cheapest broadband package. It's [up to] 10Mbps, throttled during peak times to 2.5Mbps (still faster than the 2Mbps we were getting for the same price a year ago) if you use more than a certain amount of data in one 8-hour throttling period (about the same as O2's monthly iPhone limit), but absolutely no data limit.

are unlocked iphone sold in the UK? or do they all have contracts?

i live in germany and dont know where i can get one unlocked to use with my current service.

Existing customers? Are we going to lose our plans too - check O2's press release:

http://news.o2.co.uk/Press-Releases/O2-introduces-new-mobile-data-pricing-model-2a3.aspx

New and upgrading customers will continue to receive unlimited data as a promotion until 1 October. From that date, they will be able to buy additional data Bolt Ons which include 500MB for £5 or 1GB for £10 and O2 will ensure customers have the ability to easily monitor their use by sending them regular text messages.

Existing customers will continue under their present terms, unlimited data usage with an Excessive Use Policy.

Hold on a sec...

I'm currently paying £45 per month for an 18 month contract with 1200 minutes and unlimited data yet if I 'upgrade' then instead I'd only get 900 minutes and 750MB of web use for the same length and cost of contract.

Something doesn't add up. Looks like I may have to stick out the last 6 months of my contract and then look at the competitor networks - shame though because I've been with O2 for ten years.

This has me worried for those of us on O2 Ireland. We've always looked on in envy at O2 UK's far more generous tariffs.

Not sure if any are sold factory unlocked.

But O2 do unlock phones with a fee of £15 for pay and and go customers which, as you want to use in Germany is your only option.

Is it not illegal to lock phones in France? Could that not be an option?

In my experience London Bridge is a challenge for all the networks - but I've found 3 to handle it better than most!

Nice knowing you O2.... I lived with the crap signal at home for the unlimited data but not you've got the lowest amount included thats me gone!
