To be fair though, the last launches did not have the "Ships by" stuff

AS a matter of fact pre-orders were exactly the same last year, with the 'Ships By' date being the same date that the iPhone 4 launched in the shops. Indeed, we had precisely the same debate then.

Stop worrying people. If pre-orders did not mean getting the new product on day 1, many people would not bother with them, and Apple are well aware of that.

Yes, i know ! haha - like groundhog day, i wonder what public uproar will be like antennagate this year?

Sirii listened to my phone calls and logged my conversations?
Find my freinds tracked my location ( duh )

just rang vodafone and assured me that i can collect mine
on friday or saturday:D

I just mailed them (contactus.uk@euro.apple.com) :

Good afternoon,

Last week I placed two orders for iPhone 4s', order numbers blah and blah, I do not live in the UK but I will be there on Friday the 14th to pick them up. I was assured on the phone by a sales rep that the phones would be arriving to the shipping address on the 14th or earlier, which is fine, however it's Monday the 10th and I am not seeing any progress in my orders which has left me wondering whether they will arrive on time or not.

I will be leaving the UK on Monday the 17th and I would like to get confirmation from you that the phones will be arriving on schedule (on the 14th or earlier) since otherwise I need to cancel my order.

Hope to hear soon from you.

Kind regards,

blah.

Erm, nope. They said "Delivers on" for the Iphone 4. Quite different to "Ships by". Sorry, not deliberately trying to be a tw*t, just trying to be as factually correct with info as I can. Still hoping for 14th regardless :)

I may be wrong here, but didn't the iPhone 4S preorder screen also say "delivers by" last week?

I'm not sure, but if you had asked me I'd have said it did.

Everyone relax!

If you ordered before the shipping estimates went up to 1-2 weeks then you'll get your phone on the 14th October.

"Ships by:" means that you'll receive the phone on the 14th at the latest. "Shipping" (with Apple at least) doesn't mean that they will start shipping on the date they give, it means the phone will be sent
and delivered to you by the date given.

It's still early to see any activity on the Apple site. Apple sends their products with next day delivery, so it's going to be quick. If you haven't seen any activity by Wednesday/Thursday then you can start to worry.

Again, don't worry if you got your order in before shipping estimates went up. You'll receive your iPhone on the 13th/14th.

I've heard the same whispers. UK pre-orders will not be delivered until after October 14th.

Whispers. Rumors.

Apple will deliver the iPhones to those who ordered early enough on the 14th. They managed it with the original iPad and the iPhone 4. I see the 4S being no exception.

The Apple retail stores will have the phone in on the 14th, and so will carrier stores. Why should online customers be any different? It's not like they are having trouble getting iPhones into the UK.

in the absense of actually having my grubby hands on my new 4S this endless usless speculation will at least keep me going until Friday

on the other hand my new white leather case arrives tomorrow so I can at least play with that :p

I'am also waiting to take delivery of a white leather case :) My screen protectors have already arrived. Once my case arrives, just the phone itself!

Mmm, hopefully. Odd that they would choose one convention for US ("delivers by") and another for us. US customers are seeing dispatch notices already. I hope you're right though.

We have one source of info that is not "rumours and speculation" here- Apple. They're saying no to Oct 14th delivery

Yep that's what I'm hearing. UK customers are being told products will be dispatched on the launch date and delivered next week. US customers are being told products will deliver on the launch date. It's sounding as if Apple has prioritised production runs to meet demand in the US for the launch day, resulting in delayed supplies for other parts of the world.

You misunderstand me and you are confusing the pre-orders page (which you show an image of) and the order status in your account history.

The pre-orders page on the Apple website naturally showed the delivery date promised.

Order status last year showed the same situation as this: i.e. Ships by... (same date as product available in store).

This is nothing new. We had the same worry last year and it proved to be unfounded.

There is another thread over here where people are describing their order status as "Processing, Dispatched" so unless they are walking it over from China there will be some deliveries on Friday :)

Unfortunately, that is a thread where some people have got confused. The status hasn't changed since Friday and it actually says:

"Processing Items Dispatched: Ships by October 14th"

i.e. Processing the order and it will ship by October 14th. I was a bit concerned on Friday when I misread it the same way when I was trying to cancel my duplicate orders. For a second I thought I was too late.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean it will be sent out ON the 14th. It'll be sent out tomorrow, tuesday or wedesday and arrive on the 13th/14th.

I think we'll start seeing movement by tomorrow.

Having just spoken to Apple customer services I am not holding by breath for getting hold of the phone on Friday :(

This was their response:

"Shipping will occur on Friday at the earliest due to the amount of orders that were placed on Friday. We found out earlier it topped a million pre orders in a single day. So keep an eye on your emails for shipping notification from Friday on."

Yes, ships BY, not ON.

As for whether we see movement tomorrow, I think it depends on how they are doing it. The suggestion that UK shipments are all coming together and then labelled up when here makes sense. If that's the case then we may not see anything until the end of the week.

I wonder whether they are doing UK deliveries differently this time, as we do seem to get early deliveries quite often. Perhaps they don't want them in the couriers hands until Thursday to avoid that happening.

That doesn't really make any sense. The million includes pre-orders for delivery in 1-2 weeks. They knew how much inventory they had to meet demand for launch day. They don't have any more orders for launch day than they thought they could cope with in the first place. Even if they had cocked up and taken more orders than they do have stock for, it doesn't mean they would delay shipping the ones they do have.

yes
the 1 million pre-orders are global and have no bearing on shipping in the UK.

further information that the call centre know NOTHING about what is happening this week except the information on their screen (which is the same thing we see on the internet)

the pre-orders for delivery/shipping by the 14th are FOR the 14th (shipped or delivered, whatever)
This was reserved stock. All orders over this are still taken and contribute to the 1 million but are for later delivery.

Its all what it says on your order status!

I'm sure the original iPad 1 had exactly same "ships by" and it ended up coming on delivery date. The Apple call centre are kept a lot in the dark.

Again, I think it depends on where they are being shipped from.

If they are being dispatched direct from China then it is possible that they have identified that they aren't going to get them all dispatched in time, and have prioritized US shipments. If that is the case then maybe we will have to wait a bit.

If they are being bulk shipped to the UK and then labelled up here then it seems a bit early to be admitting that they won't get them out by Thursday, unless there has been a delay in them arriving in the UK. You would have thought they would try to get as many out for launch day as possible, even if pure volume means they won't all be.

It does look like expectation management to me, but I have to say that the signs of a possible delay do seem to be a bit stronger this time than I've seen before.

Actually, many came a day early.
