hooray! mines switched to shipped
and I got UPS - the tracking is working (says that UPS is still to pick up from Apple's depot)
my original order confirmation was October 7th at 10:25am

That's what the Delivery App on my iPhone says, but on their website under status, its asking me to give them a call

If its still on prepared to ship, then you'll likely get:
A UPS shipping label has been created. Once the shipment arrives at our facility, the tracking status--including the scheduled delivery date--will be updated.
What iPhone did you get? Mines is 32gb white and still not shipped. Hope it's UPS for me too!

EDIT: Called them, no issues. It's being held in their depot for a delivery tomorrow. Apparently when there is no status update their website says "Please Call".

Likewise... first time I've decided to save myself the "hassle" of queueing at an Apple Store. Think I made the wrong choice.
Mine has shipped via TNT, destination Bristol. White 64GB ordered on Friday around 9am from Apple.

Nope, with my order number, I got below notice.
UPS could not locate the shipment details for your request. Please verify your information and try again later.
The last time I saw a status page like that there was a customs fee to pay.
I'd call them.

There seems to be quite a few people who've got order statuses of SHIPPED on the Apple site and on the UPS site:

Some of these people are saying they've got delivery dates of tomorrow, but mine still says "On or before 17th" on the Apple site and I can't see any other date anywhere else. Where are people getting their delivery dates from?

got my date from my shipment email from apple and also from the shipment page after you click 'track shipment' on the apple order page
