If the sim free iphone 4s will be £499 starting price in the UK will it be cheaper for me to buy it in the US?

Possibly.

In the past, I believe that the unlocked price has been $649. But remember - that doesn't include sales tax, which depends on which state you buy.

Let's say you buy in New York, where sales tax is roughly 8%. That's $701.
Assuming you wouldn't bother with legal niceties like VAT and import duty, and also assuming you could get today's market level exchange rates, you're looking at £458.

So you've saved yourself £41, but your warranty will be US only - so if anything goes wrong with your phone, you'll have to head back to the States just to take it to the genius bar.

I think you're better off buying it here.

Not always the case - I remember quite a lot of us in the UK on here last year with the iPhone 4 launch had got pre-orders in within the first few minutes which had gone through fine and we got an estimated delivery date of launch day. But then a couple of days before launch, we got these:

Revised Delivery Date

Thank you for purchasing the new Apple iPhone 4.

We are currently preparing your Order for shipment.

Your delivery address is in an area where our carrier transit times are slightly longer. We expect to deliver your Order after the 24th June.

You will receive a Shipment Notification when your Order is dispatched, which will provide you with more specific tracking information.

And we weren't people living in the remote corners of the Scottish Highlands, most of us lived with 5-10 miles of large towns or cities; I think one person even lived in Manchester City Centre! In the end mine turned up on the Monday after the Friday launch, and went straight back as I'd been able to pick one up from the Apple Store on the Saturday.

What doesn't help with Friday launches is if you don't get it then, you've got at least 3 days to wait over the weekend.

I used the word usually. There will always be exceptions. ;)

I'm on 16 months of an 18 month iPhone 4 O2 tarrif, any idea what the best way of pre-ordering would be? (happy to pay for the extra 2 months at O2). Will O2 offer pre-ordering?

O2 will most likely only allow ordering directly on the actual day of release.

Your best bet would be to buy out your contract tomorrow. Your fast track upgrade will only be 1 months line rental, as you should get an early upgrade bonus of 1 month.

Then pre-order one for Apple store collection, and carry out your upgrade in store.

Great thanks for the advice!

Are you sure default Applecare is tied to the country? Extended applecare is international.

However, it doesnt look like you can get SIM free iPhone 4S from the USA on release. As i mentioned earlier in the thread. :)

I imagine they will be the same as the current iPhone 4 tarriffs. However, as the iPhone 4S is marginally cheaper than the iPhone 4, the subsidised handset prices might be a tiny bit lower.

yeah i meant pricing of handset haha still on my original iphone tariff from day one

So we all going for 8AM?

Going to wait till 12 just in cast, however, no announcement has been made on the Apple UK site like the Apple Support tech told me online. Think it will be 8am.

I think there are going to be millions of these things available for day of release. I would think Apple have been ramping the production of these things for months.

I'm pretty sure that Applecare was country based. Are you sure that Applecare+ is different? from the terms and conditions:

Hello everyone, i am going to get the iPhone 4s from 3 here in the UK. Will 3 be doing pre-orders or will it only be Apple themselves that allow pre-orders. Will i have to wait till the 14th. I don't want to order from Apple because i have found a contract that is right for me on 3. This is the first time i have brought an iPhone and i expected the pre-order process to be a little bit easier in terms of the providers actually telling you when you can pre order the iPhone or even just whether they will be doing pre-orders! Can anyone help?

Given we're only a few months off Xmas I think the exact same thing. Doubt the demand will be as high as the iPhone 4 too. Going to hold out for a few weeks though as I want to play around with a Nexus Prime before I fully commit.

I'm sure they will. Just pop into a 3 store whenever you can and see what they say, they may have already started.

I know Orange are starting their in store process tomorrow. £20 for a preorder, for new and upgrading customer, including people who want a early upgrade.

Don't worry about what Apple are doing directly, you will just end up getting really confused. Just concentrate on your service providers site etc.

I have bought lots of Apple stuff in the US and had the warranty honoured without question here in the UK.

I'm dying with anticipation here. 12:01 for you over there means 1AM here. Since I'm writing a paper, I'll be up then anyway. But then all that apparently won't matter anyway, because the consensus seems to be that it will be 8AM tomorrow... I'm curious to see if the servers will hold.

I just spoke to a 3 representative via the live chat feature on the 3 website and he told me that i won't be able to pre order the new iPhone from 3. Damn! The pre order system seems so much more simpler in the United States.

I'm an Orange contract customer but my upgrade isn't until December. Will they be charging £499 for the 16GB or will it be cheaper? So you pay £20 up front?

If you know, that'd be great!

Any idea on the tariffs? Same as iPhone 4?

For anyone selling their contract iPhone 4's, I managed to get mine factory unlocked by ringing the network (three in my case). £15 fee though. Easier to sell mind.

Yeah the pre-order is £20 and you get it back when the phone goes through the till!

You will still be able to pre-order but you will have to go through the new "early upgrade" process. Which is basically paying off your existing contract but you get a 30% discount on that. That's if you want it as quick as possible.

I would wait until 2/3 weeks before your upgrade is due before you preorder, by that time your phone will be in stock in time for your upgrade, and then you only have to pay for the phone If you go on a lower-end contract. I envisage the phone being free from £50 per month.

Prices for the PAYG variant haven't been released yet but I'd expect the same prices as the 4 e.g - £509 + £10 top-up.
