Orange are faffing about with it, I think they said something like 'we hope to have PAYG nano sims by Friday!' oh, you hope, do you? You'd better do more that just hope, or else we'll probably all migrate somewhere else.![]()
I've had an iPhone 3GS for 3 years so thought best to upgrade and buy the iPhone 5 directly from Apple having missing out the 4/4S. Hopefully it will arrive at my doorstep on Friday morning...
However I thought I'd share my recent experience along with many other GiffGaff members on how purchasing the iPhone 5 has resulted in them unable to potentially remain with GiffGaff in the short term. I'm a long standing GiffGaff user (I even have a special "founders" badge next to my avatar) but because they couldn't source nano sims fast enough, many people have decided to jump ship and try their luck elsewhere.
....
There is word in the GiffGaff forums that you maybe able to "cut" and "thin down" your current standard size and micro size sims down to a nano sim but no one has confirmed that this actually works with an iPhone 5 yet. If it does work then this maybe a short term fix until GiffGaff can get their supply of nano sims.
So I'll wait to hear whether this very crude hack works, otherwise I should have my Three nano sim ready to go with my number being ported next week...
Hope this helps for fellow GiffGaff members and people that are looking to get some cashback from Quidco on Three Nano Sims
On Three I can confirm you CAN tether on the cheaper plans and PAYG. I started on PAYG and moved to a 30 day plan.
On other networks the iPhone tethering is blocked so you cant even enable it. You just get a message telling you to contact them on xxxxx.
Three dont appear to have the software installed on their network which stops this. It works with no restrictions.
They do use something called TrafficSense which sees how you are using the network. If they see you using excessive amounts of data on one of their all you can eat plans then they start asking questions. The only plan which officially allows tethering is the One plan but all other plans allow it.
I have heard of Android users having problems in that they tether but when they view a web page on the tethered device it tells them they need a bundle but I have never had a problem with other iPhones or iPads connecting to my personal hotspot.
I am on Three's £12 a month plan (the older one with 300 mins and 1GB of data). It's also worth pointing out that Three do not charge you for going over your allowance, its on their website, take a look. They do however send you annoying texts when you are near your limit. Hence my 1GB instead of 500mb. Just to stop the nagging. I dont even have the option to add a tethering bundle in MyThree.
Three's network currently supports HSPA+ and from what I understand DC-HSDPA at some point although this was delayed. I often get 5mbps+ on my iPhone 4 so hoping for better on the 5.
EE is out for me, its orange and t-mobile. This year I left orange and the wife left t-mobile. Good coverage but piss poor speed and awful customer service. Went with Three as data is what we need more than calls and their plans just had the best rates. So far very happy. Also EE are saying you need to sign a new minimum term contract to switch from T-Mob or orange. So im guessing your 24 month contract could suddenly turn into a 30 month one.
The question for most is... Is your 3G too slow and warrants a 4G network?
Downside of Three. Called 333 to get a nano sim. It came the next day, but it was pre-activated even though they said it wouldnt be so my current SIM stopped working. Had to take a trip to a 3 store to pickup an adapter just to get back up and running. They also tried to charge me £5.11 but I said that on their @ThreeUK twitter they said it was free so the nice chap in India dropped the charge.
Check out the 3 blog, they have a couple of good articles on their network speeds, what they support and plans etc. They also say they support HD/Wideband audio but no details if it is compatible with the iP5.
My advice for those with tethering, drop it and save yourself £120 over 2 years.
The T-Mobile rep I spoke to laughed at me when I asked If I would be receiving the phone on friday.![]()
She said it would ship after they receive their inventory which is on the 21st.
Keeping my hopes up for the 21st...
anybody got a shipping email yet? it appears many US customers have already got tracking details..........I feel left out!![]()

Just signed up after having been lurking.
I've been insterestedin what folks have been saying about deliveries and Orange so I called them up. I preordered (upgrade) over the phone at about 08.20 last Friday. As we know, Orange had all sorts of problems processing the orders, eventually being able to do it by adding the cost of the upgrade to my bill. I then paid the same amount to my bill from my cc.
Anyhoo, I called them today to see if I could get them to tell UK Mail to leave it next door if I wasn't in. I probably won't be. The woman on the upgrades team reckoned that no orders could go anywhere but the billing address and that Apple have said that they're not allowed to change this. So I asked if mine was going to deliver on Friday 21st, to which she said none of the phone operators would be able to deliver on Friday as they're only released on Friday!! She then suggested that Orange deliveries would be the Monday at the earliest! I told her that other operators are claiming to be delivering on the Friday to which she retorted that this was impossible as they could only send them out on the Friday!!
I reckon she's probably talking balls, but she said that I'd get a text from UK Mail once they had the package to arrange a choice if 3 delivery days, starting on the 24th, ffs..
She also said that the nano sim would come with the phone, which I suppose is something. Ah well, here's hoping it comes on Friday anyway, although chances are nobody will be in.
Anyone heard different from Orange? I assume it's the same as T-Mobile being under the EE banner together.
I've just had a phone call direct from Apple saying that due to a "logistics issue" my iPhone will not be delivered on the 21st. It will be Monday or Tuesday. They apologise for the unexpected issue and are trying to contact all those affected.
For those who are curious I ordered a 32gb Black iPhone 5 and had the confirmation email at 8.29am

T-Mobile are now saying on Twitter that you can pick up sims in store on Friday, not great but better than the rumours they wouldn't have any until the start of October. Just hope my phone isn't delivered too late now so the store is still open.
How do you find Tesco as a Network mate? They have a pretty good offer I'm tempted on......
250 mins (work offshore, so don't need a lot of minutes)
5000 texts
1GB data
1 month contract.
For £12.50 a month......
I'm on an O2 PAYG card at the moment.......
Stuart.

No...mine's been at "preparing for shipment" since Saturday. What's there to prepare? Why don't they be a little more honest and have a status "stalling until nearer the release date"?

Who knows, they might be here now and we wont get shipping email until the day before when they are actually with the home depot......but i enjoy watching it come all the way around the world!
