Apparently it is cheaper to buy on contract (depending on your requirements and choice of network, of course) but a lot of people are definitely turning their back on two year contracts - particularly as many of the posters on this thread will be replacing their iPhone 5 in 12 months' time anyway!
Whenever I've worked it out its cheaper to go contract/Sim free if you plan on upgrading every 12 months or possibly switching networks. I have sim only plan with 600 mins plan. Getting the 64GB for £700, plus 12 x £15.50 a month will be £886 over the year, while getting it on 12mth contract with VF it's £439 up front for the handset and £41 a month for 600 min plan so £931 in total. Not a massive saving, but its £45 and its not locked to any network.

You're in the same predicament I was in, Hated 18 months and 24 months which is 2 years (as some like to hide that fact) is way too long considering you pay for the phone over that time and over inflated tariffs compared to sim only. I went the Apple route.

Many will get into debt just to have latest iPhone, I bought mine and got a great sim only deal which proves to me that a contract is a rip off.

For some it's the only way but me personally I can not be mugged. Ps I'll probably keep this for 2 years, I never bought it to change yearly but to avoid the extortionate prices the UK companies are asking for considering they cost peanuts.

Have to agree.

I saved for the phone when the rumours started about when it could come out. If you can afford to buy it outright then the money you save on a contract is worth it. I'm on a rolling 30 day contract for £10.50. Even if I keep that same deal for 2 years I think I worked out I'm saving about £300. At least.

A couple of people thought I was mad when they'd paid under a £100 and got tied up to a two year contract at £40 a month. They didn't think I was that stupid when I told them how much it worked out at and how much more they were paying lol.

Thanks for that. Looks as though the majority are 24 months which I do not want.

Could I ask what contract you're on and what's included?

I'm guessing you've seen the 'offer' from O2? 6 months early upgrade for a meagre £63 per month for 24 months. That's over £1500

All I need in terms of a tariff is a lot of texts & a GB of data. Who's best to go with, O2?

I went with Vodafone as I love their CS, I got Unlimited minutes
1GB internet Unlimited texts for £18.50 as i was a loyal/present customer. They gave me extra 1GB of internet. So i can now tether my iPad when out and not be charged unless i go over my allowances, Which is great

Yes there are cheaper deals with say Gif gaff etc Which are good if i'm honest i can't run to three for all you can eat due too very poor CS As i've been told by my mates that they have very poor with customer service . Something I value, Seen on this thread how T mobile and Orange are treating their customers.

LOL. Yeah most don't look at bigger picture, They see you pay in full and are shocked cos they are paying monthly but when they add up their expensive contract they then see who is the smart one lol.

Nothing wrong with contracts just that they are rip off and because they know people want the iPhone they take advantage, Not with me though. I'm out.

Yeah, it's Vodafone. Unlimited texts and I think unlimited calls (didn't take much notice as don't call much at all) with 100mb of data. Not enough data for some but plenty for me so I was pretty chuffed with that. It's only £15 to go up to 500mb so not a huge stretch if you need the extra data.

Certainly for lower price contracts, the first 12 months of a 24 month contract is a similar price to buying the phone outright and going with someone like giffgaff or three. And then of course you have £10-£30 per month for the next 12 months after then, and the option to upgrade if you'd like/have the money.

Turns out mine has a little dot showing through silver on the edge near the headphone jack on my black 5.

Called customer service today as I'd decided I no longer was happy to put up with a defect on a product I've paid a lot of money for.

Customer service were brilliant, apologised, offered a refund or exchange. Was tempted with the refund but have taken the exchange. Apparently exchanges have priority so a driver will call me within 48 hrs to arrange when is convenient to deliver me a new boxed unit and collect my old one.

Fingers crossed this one is perfect. If not I'll be taking a refund and going back to the trusty s2.

And don't forget the resale value of an unlocked phone is higher than a locked one.

Got a white 32gb here bought from apple an on the three £12.90 ayce one month sim only deal, I priced it against 24 month deals as I plan on keeping this phone for two years and it works out at £908 over two year. Was with giffgaff which would have brought that down to £839 over two years but due to ongoing O2 network issues I decided it was time to move on.

Didn't want to take out a 12/24m deal as I didn't want to be tied to one provider for that duration. With this deal I can switch as and when I wish.

“@Orangeuk: We're sorry that a few customers have had problems with their iPhone delivery - we’re resolving this now and iPhones are being sent out ASAP”

This tweet from orange. I'll take it with a pinch of salt. I've been told every day since last Friday 'it'll be with you tomorrow'. Just more lies after lies.

Carphone Warehouse SIM Free - Apparently NOT!

Anybody assuming the iPhones bought from Carphone Warehouse as SIM Free may be in for a surprise. I found this handy tidbit hidden away at the bottom of the page:

http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/iphone-5?intcmp=HP_iPh5

"iPhone will lock itself to the network of the first SIM card that is used in the phone. Subsequently attempting to use it on any other network, for example by replacing the SIM card, may mean it becomes permanently unusable. SIM free iPhones can only be used with a UK-network SIM card, and will not accept foreign SIM cards."

I shall be calling up and cancelling my order. Talk about mis-selling!

We bought our phones outright and opted for O2 simplicity. Gives us the freedom of not, being tied into 18-24 month contracts.

Anyone know if any UK Apple Stores have the Lightning to USB cable in stock? I want to buy 2 for myself and one for my dad, wondering if I could pop in tomorrow and buy them?

would that mean you cant upgrade to 4g on EE..... wont EE be issuing new sims to orange and t-mobile customers which would then cripple your iphone.

received my replacement black 32GB today, other than a couple of tiny marks its perfect :D

Hope everyone has similar results.. :apple:

Orange UK

I ordered my upgrade to the iphone 5 black 32GB on the morning of the 14th, the 1st day. They've taken my money and I still have no idea when I can expect delivery.

I assume at least some people have started receiving their iphones via Orange?

The woman on the phone yesterday told me I was high up on the pre-order list so would not have to wait the full 30 days. Wish I knew a ball park date especially after taking my money!

So great news my iphone 5 arrived today, so quite a quick turnaround with 11 days from the date of 1st preorders.

Bad news is that it arrived damaged!!!!!

I have 1 chip on the corner, and 2 dents on the ridge of the frame, called orange and it seems I'm the 1st person to get a damaged iphone5, wow. Now I have to send it back to them and wait for a replacement!

Could I take it straight to an Apple store and get a replacement there in the shop?

Ha lets see how quick "ASAP" is..?

I too am not a fan of the 24 months contracts but with Orange I get a great deal:

The offer early upgrades with a 25% discount, for example I was in the 11th month of my iPhone 4S 24m contract. They allowed me to buy out at £236 plus £109 for the 5 that's a total of £345 however they offered to recycle my 4s for £300 meaning my total outlay was £45 for the latest and greatest. To top it all off they also offered me the £36pm plan for £26pm as loyality. My only mistake is I should have taken the £42 tariff and got an extra 1gb and the phone for cheaper.

Overall I am happy.

Has anyone been able to make a online iphone 5 reserveration today?

I've been trying all day from work, but kept getting the error "server unreachable" after I click the last submit button.

So what's the general consensus here, are the majority buying their phones outright & using with their tariff of choice?

I find the 24 month contracts far too long. I dislike having an 18 month at the minute, let alone 24 :D

I was thinking of buying the phone & getting an O2 simplicity contract of some sort.

I guess what I'm trying to say is what's the cheapest overall option?

Thats what I do.
I have the O2 Simplicity contract - £15.50 per month.

I then buy my phones sim free (32GB versions) for £600.
I sold my 4s for £450, so only paid £150 for the new one overall, and keep my cheap tariff!

Bear in mind although I dont use a case on my phones I keep them absolutely mint. In own pocket without anything else etc. The box is kept with all accessories unused etc. So when I come to sell its like a brand new package - keeps the value right up.
