Ok so no midnight launch so we looking at 8am here in the UK? i hope its not at 3am like others have been saying..

Damn, I remember this happened with the iPhone 4 pre orders, I managed to get a pre-order down a little after 8am the next day, so that is what I shall try to do here.

Alright, hands up who frantically checked to see if the iPhone was available to pre-order when we already know full well it won't be up until 8:01? *Raises hand*.

There's no requirement they be backwards compatible at all. Networks will still stock standard and micro SIMs for other devices.

I'm sitting here right now with a (Three) Nano sim in my iPhone 4
Using the little plastic adaptor they gave me.

Nano sim =£5.11
Adaptor =£0
Number transfer from Micro to Nano done in store and transferred 2 hours later.

I'm ready!

Moseley is a notorious black hole for a signal. No way I could live with Voda/Orange having no signal. O2 is passable here but only one giving me full signal is Three.

I used to work in Wolves and everyone had issues getting a signal with Orange (who had the work contract) but Three was always strong.

I'm travelling from Snow Hill to London tomorrow so I'll no doubt be eating my words after that! ;)

Hopefully you won't mate! I'm now starting to wonder whether my iPhone has antenna issues which is why I've faced so many signal problems.

No midnight launch?

It's expected to be a worldwide launch when it is midnight in Cupertino (though I didn't see anything in the news reports mention anything but US start time, so there is a chance we are all making the wrong assumption, but I think that is unlikely).

Based on my past experience it will mean the site crashes before any of us manage to checkout, and then the UK store will stay down for hours and hours (while they wait for the US traffic to calm down). But, I'm a pessimist. Maybe this year they will actually be ready for us...

With the iPhone 4 I pre ordered online to collect in apple store.

Was that option available for 4S? and do you know if its available this time round?

Thanks

*Sheepishly looks round* ermm *refreshes Apple Store again just in case*, *raises hand*

:p

So why have no contract been announced yet? Just don't understand.

It's the same every year. I think it is because the carriers are all jerks. That or afraid if they announce first their competitors will undercut them by a tiny amount, winning those of us willing to switch.

Going for a dual wield when pre-orders open. Will have the Apple Store open on my computer in one hand and the Apple Store App up on my phone in the other. One of them has to make surely!? ;)

No, it was just a really terrible attempt at a joke which made you look like an idiot.

Sorry. Humour fail.

Maybe I can make up for it with some info that might help people.

1. If you're preordering, then I'm 99.9% confident that they will (be supposed to) happen at 8 am tomorrow morning.

2. They probably won't start at exactly 8 am. They haven't the past couple of launches.

3. The servers will probably struggle when preorders do go live. Keep trying though and you'll get through eventually.

4. If I remember correctly from the iPhone 4 launch, preorders up until about mid-morning were shipped on launch day, and later preorders had to wait 3-5 days after launch until shipping.

5. Sim-free iPhones should work with any network's sims.

6. Contract phones work out about the same cost overall as a contract-free phone on the cheapest tariff over the same length of time. I found that the best option for me was to go contract-free with a rolling monthly contract on Tesco Mobile. That gave me the freedom of not being locked into a contract and upgrading when the 4S came out (although I decided not to).

7. Deliveries on launch day might be problematic for some. My iPhone 4 didn't arrive until the Monday after launch. Apple typically choose a couple of courier firms to deliver the iPhones and YMMV depending on the courier.

Hope that helps some people, although I'm sure most of you know all of this already. Apologies again for my strange sense of humour.
