I'm actually torn between upgrading to the 5s and getting a galaxy s4 mini. I don't like massive screens. So the full fat S4 is a no go for me.

I know the s4 mini would be a downgrade but cash is right right now so would save me £300 over the year.

I have an iPhone 5. It's discontinued and I don't know 100% if apple will continue to support it. Some say yes, some say no. Until I hear from apple themselves I can't be sure. I could sell this and buy the mini outright and use a £10 sim only. I know android isn't supported for any great length of time. But it's a lot less cash to spend.

But, I like the iPhone. I like iOS. I like the simplicity of the iPhone. That its reliable and just works.

So do I shell out the extra and stick with apple or save the cash and go android.

The 5c utilises the same hardware as the 5, so there should be no issues in supporting the 5.

Apple has discontinued items before and continued to support them, for example the 3rd generation iPad, they pulled that from their site as soon as the 4th was released yet it still can run iOS 7 (It came with iOS 5).

What you need to think about is have you invested into the apple eco-system? I have, I have bought so many apps and games that I rely on, on a daily basis, not to mention I own an iPad and a Mac that all work harmoniously together. Add up all these apps that need replacing and it starts to become expensive to move to the "cheaper" alternatives

Why would Apple discontinue support?

You want to save money on one hand yet want to spend money to upgrade on the other... The phone will be supported for the next couple of years so that is a non-issue so unless you really want the £300 i would say stick with the 5.

Lol ah but I like new gadgets lol. And I have some money set aside to upgrade with.

I have an iPad and iPod. So the apps will still be used. And most apps I use are free on android.

I just don't know if I could get on with android.

I'll stick with the 5 for a few months and decide. I'm hoping once I see the 5s and ios7 it'll be much easier to make my mind up.

Giffgaff runs on the O2 network so if you have an O2 signal it will work with Giffgaff too.

I thought this to. We tried them after we tried 3 but had the same outcome. It did puzzle me as to why considering O2 works fine.

No. It will be terminated 1 month after you successfully use the PAC code

Not quite correct, the PAC is valid for 30 days, and counts as notice. If you were to use it the day you receive it, it will terminate the line immediately, but the account will still be billed for 30 days. If you were to use it on day 29, you would be billed for one extra day.

The line terminates immediately on use of PAC, but you are still liable for paying for the 30 day notice period is the easiest way to describe it.

Cheers for that...

Then O2 screwed me last year, when they only started the 30 day notice when the PAC was activated when i sent it to Orange.

I'm on o2 pay as you go, so I'm just going to loose a few £ really. When I request the code, the o2 network will still work until I use the Three network with the PAC code, right?

That is, could I request the code next Wednesday, receive iPhone on the following Monday and still use the o2 phone? I understand that once I turn on the new iPhone, Three may take upto one business day to complete the transfer.

Obviously we have to wait to see what 5S contracts look like, but the evidence from the 4S, the 5 and the 5C suggests that regardless of carrier, the cheapest option over 12 months, and in most cases 24 months, is to buy the iphone sim-free from Apple, and take out a SIM-only contract with the carrier that gives you the best signal at home/work.

I may have to create a big spreadsheet with all the tariffs, and total costs to be sure, but it's certainly looking that way to me...

If you do please share!

Not all in one place, but Three's website has a good coverage map, which from my experience is pretty accurate http://www.three.co.uk/Support/Coverage

Can only cite my own experiences, but the coverage map on the 3 website shows my neighbourhood as having 'excellent indoor & outdoor' coverage for their flavour of 'superfast intenet'.

In reality, I get no signal at all indoors, ever, and have to walk approx. 300 meters down the road to pick up anything even resembling 'superfast'. I keep a payg sim from 3 handy so I can check coverage occasionally. I'm still on an ancient O2 'iphone simplicity 20' tariff (30 day rolling contract, unlimited data) with an additional small discount (so it's £19 per month), which is great value compared to most of what's available today.

If I ever actually get good signal from them, I'm more than happy to sign up. Fat chance of that anytime in the near or even distant future though, methinks.

O2 'retentions' just told me that there'll be no good 'deals' for existing customers for a 5S. The chap was refreshingly honest, which is a nice change.

He said there won't be 'deals' (for existing customers or anyone due a 'free upgrade') until the demand/hype has receded. He couldn't comment on handset prices but said the tariff would be £37pm for 3G or £47pm for 4G. He also said that they will only have the 16gb version of the 5S, which I wouldn't want anyway.

He agreed/said that my existing tariff was millions of times better than anything else they can offer these days so I should just buy a phone sim-free and stay with the ancient tariff, the likes of which they will never offer again.

I'm just gonna skip the 5S altogether I think. 4G is just hype to me at the moment anyway.

Having said all that, I'd love to know if other people get the same story from 'retentions'!

EE have an offer on their sim-only deals, which makes them look a lot more attractive!

£16pm for 1GB until 27th Sept. Still not 'amazing' but it's a a lot more enticing than £26! Or £21 for 3gb which seems pretty good.

They are better, but still expensive compared to Three. Sure three don't have 4G coverage yet, but when they do, they aren't upping prices. £15 for unlimited data 300 minutes and 3000 texts will not be matched.

Indeed. Sadly where I live though, there is no useful coverage on 3. I might get a 30 day EE sim and test them out, if it works well I could still sign up at the discounted rate (I won't be left feeling toooo screwed over at £21 for 3gb) before the offer ends.

Removing 3 from the equation for a moment, these EE 'offers' seem to be the best value for a 4G tariff. Or even compared to 3G ones.

That's a very good idea; buying the sim before prices go up, I might do the same! My Three coverage is good, the same as EE, but 4G is a whole new story. (neither offer it in my area yet but my town isn't listed for 2014 either)

Whoa. Just checked Three's plan for my area (N.E Lincs) and it won't be until 2015!

http://www.4g.co.uk/operators/three-4g-wont-be-available-in-16-cities-till-2015_30014059

EE on the other hand, are looking to cover 98% of the UK by 2014!!!

I think EE are the way to go now. Thanks for pointing that deal out.

No worries! I think I've come to the same conclusion as you too. It's worth a try on a 30 day sim.

So, midnight, then?

No. One minute past midnight.;)
