I've been to the Bromley store a few times now early over the past few days and they only have space grey iPhones. And when I call Regent Street, they only seem to have space grey coming in.

What's happened to silver and gold?

More space grey are being made them gold or silver so shops are bound to get more deliverys of them.

Where do u live?

What's happened to silver and gold?

I suspect (and this is pure speculation) that they were making a larger percentage of space grey initially. They probably had to increase the silver/golds because of demand (there were reports that they had increased production of gold) but the majority of the silver/gold production has been used to fulfil online orders and third party retailers.

I'm in the London area and some of the stores I've been to have said that they have not had much or any gold in the last few weeks. Some have indicated that they have received some silver models but I've not managed to get one. Space greys have been available when I have been in store on several occasions.

Interestingly, one of the London stores said to me today that they only had stock for contracts today which struck me as a little odd as I thought all Apple stock is unlocked - he said that all the stock coming in had been locked to networks. I'm a bit suspicious of this and suspect that they have been told to sell more contracts as how would they know which networks they are likely to sell most of? First time I have been told this.

I've been told the same thing at a couple of stores - that stock has been pre-allocated to be sold as either SIM free or to be sold as part of a contract.

I guessed that this might be because of all the scalpers taking so much of the stock.

Whilst I understand that this may reduce the scalpers and increase their margins through commission via the networks, they could've done this at the beginning when the scalpers were out in full force.

It seemed to me that Apple were happy to shift the stock asap each day so the store returned to normal. However, by doing this, there is little interaction with the customer. It doesn't create a want (I wanted the phone anyway) but it does create frustration and disappointment.

I must've visit the stores over 20 times over the last few weeks (I'm in London so have a few to choose from). I purchased two iPhones at different times from different stores (first phone was returned as it was unwanted). The Apple website and phone lines tell you that they will help you find the right contract and help you set it up but on neither occasion was I asked if I wanted a contract, if I wanted the phone setup or if I wanted any accessories.

If Apple had a reservations system operating this year, or a buy and collect service (as they have done in the US this year), they could have planned their service better to enable more interaction to those customers who wanted the interaction. Apple says it wants more people to buy their products from their stores. Well they need to offer something different to what other stores offer (including online stores) and a good customer experience, i.e. hassle-free purchase of the phone with all the assistance required.
