and what happens if its got chips/scratches/dead pixels, do i have to return it via UPS or can i just take it into an apple store and get a new one?

If you want a reatail unit ( brand new phone and accessories ) u call apple and they send one out a new one and send ups to pick up the old.

If you dont mind a service unit which may or may not be refurbished then u can do genius bar.

Hopefully u get perfect one out the box

Returns have to be to the point of purchase so if you buy on the Apple Online Store then it has to be returned to them (via UPS or TNT with prior agreement from Apple). I believe Apple retail and Apple online store currently function separately so that may be the reason for this. Things could change next year when both retail and online store operations are merged under Angela Ahrendts.

If you do have a problem contact aftersales and they will issue a replacement and set up the return. You will get an RMA number from Apple and then the TNT/UPS will contact you to arrange the return. Apple should let you keep the original phone until the replacement arrives. Read my posts in this thread for more info.

If you really want to return the phone to store you can do, but this would mean getting an AppleCare warranty replacement. In this case they simply replace the handset. Note that the replacement could well be a refurbished unit.

Hope this helps but equally hope you don't run into a problem in the first place!

Just tried that mate

Got a 4th Gen iPad and iPhone 5S and nothing :(

Got it on both my 4s and 5s. It reported the update as soon as I connected to iTunes.

My 4th Gen iPad is showing it as available OTA, but I prefer to update on my PC, so it'll wait until I have time.

tomorrow (October orderers) is the 24th! the start of the next batch of shipping. hoping my 16GB gold will get of 'Processing' and to 'Preparing for dispatch'. got from 24th-28th though..

The Apple website and phone lines tell you that they will help you find the right contract and help you set it up but on neither occasion was I asked if I wanted a contract, if I wanted the phone setup or if I wanted any accessories.

Apple UK stores don't offer any contracts, never have and probably never will. That's a US only thing.

Apple stores are never pushy, they sell you stuff if you want it, if you don't they don't suggest it, as they sell the stock regardless. Some may deem it as forcing extras onto you if they were to push cases, protectors and what not. :)

Apple Stores in the UK do offer contracts, they have done so for as long as I can remember

*retail and *you. It amazes me how people on the internet cannot spell! After all, you have a spell checker!

That's utter rubbish. I don't think you have a clue about anything to do with Apple Retail!

You are correct, in fact they've offered contracts ever since the launch of the original iPhone. Back then it was only O2, but they have always offered contracts.

I wonder where oVerboost is that he thinks they don't?

Yup, second all of this.

My phone arrived on Monday with one of the mics being faulty to the effect that folk cannot hear me on the phone when I hold it to my ear and speak; I have to use speakerphone or the headphones.

Organised with Apple Distribution Int. on Monday afternoon a replacement handset. You keep your handset until the new one comes, as you say Scottish, and I managed to talk him into throwing a free handset into the mix too. If others are looking for replacement models, make sure you speak to these guys. Much more willing to help than the UK/Ireland call centres.

Dispatched today as well which was quite impressive. It's been a slog and I'm still really peeved that I get a broken phone after all that wait but I suppose their replacement service has been pretty efficient.
