I'm wondering what are my chances like to buy a 5S unlocked at the Buchanan Street store in Glasgow if I arrive at around 7:45am?

The only queueing I've done before was outside the Covent Garden store in London for an iPad 4, and the queue for that was very small (although I expect for the 5C/5S it'll be much larger)

I walked down Buchanan Street last year, on the morning of the 5 release (I was in Glasgow for a meeting) about 8am.. and the queue was 200+.. enormous.. snaking around tensa-barriers..

I think you'll need to get there earlier! Plus be prepared to spend half the morning there.

----------

Question 1 - will I be able to use this contract with a 5s to access the 4G network or would it be limited to 3G only?

Question 2 - if I purchase the handset sim-free from the US, will it work on our UK networks' 4G bands?

Question 3 - is the only way for me to get 4G access in the UK to have to switch to an iPhone-specific 4G contract or are there any other more advisable contracts out there?
1 - no. 3G only.
2 - no definite answer on this yet. The technical specs suggest it might, but mobile phone spectrums are more complicated than just the frequency.
3 - yes; not that I know of.

----------

I'll be in Singapore on launch day. Looking at prices, I can get the 64 gig 5s for about £649, and the Singapore model looks like it has all the UK LTE bands and more. Any downsides to buying abroad, such as warranty?
Don't forget the 20% VAT you'll pay on the phone when bringing it back into the UK.
Oh, and be careful with where you buy, and what you buy... lots of stories of buying phones in Singapore, only to find out they're a fake/copy.

So I have an iPhone 5 on O2 on one of the old 1 month rolling Simplicity deals that has unlimited data, 1200 texts, 600 mins for like £20 per month.

You will need to be on a 4G specific tariff in order to get 4G Internet access. Otherwise you will only be able to benefit 3G speeds only.

Likewise, there for the F1, and saw the overlap and was considering the same thing. I'm presuming iPhones from an apple store in singapore would be unlocked.

Was also considering getting a friend to buy one for me from the USA as well. As far as I can tell it means losing out on LTE band 7 (2600) which wouldn't be a problem if I sign up with 3 (see http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2013/02/ofcom-announces-winners-of-the-4g-mobile-auction/) , but gains a lot more international bands, which would be useful for travel.

Thanks for the replies guys. Might have to switch out from the old Simplicity deal after all if I want to get the 5s then. May not bother and continue with the 5 for now in that case unless I can get a decent amount for it. Anybody want a 32GB black iPhone5 in great condition? lol

Well that sucks.

I swear this happened last year for the 5 as well with O2. O2 said 4G was coming, then it didn't, then it did but wasn't available for iPhone... I stayed on my Simplpicity contract back then because of that, and now a year later, another product later, and still no progress at launch? Disappointing.

Does anyone know if you can pre order the 5C from anywhere else other than Apple tomorrow?

Or whether it will be from Midnight here too?

I've seen in the US you can preorder from a couple of places from midnight (not sure what Apple are doing) so wondered if anyone knew whether it would be the same here.

Think you can pre-order from the carriers themselves too.

I would have thought you could pre-order from carrier websites too, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able too... Although I've not seen any info as of yet about pre-ordering it on any major carrier website.

Apple Warranty Information said:
IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.
Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.

I'd be careful - although the 'may' suggests that they could still honour it in other countries.

Does anyone know of any upgrade schemes on Orange? I upgraded to iPhone 5 on release day and would love to get the 5S but not sure how I could work it!

Yup F1 as well ;)

Can't see any Apple stores but there's a premium reseller listed on Apple's site in the shops at Marina Bay Sands where I'm staying. I'm presuming if they're listed on Apple's website then they're legit and there's some cover to avoid buying some dodgy fake.

Singapore Apple store page says they're unlocked. http://store.apple.com/sg/buy-iphone/iphone5s

VAT wouldn't be an issue as I'd just have it in my pocket as my normal phone, so how would they know...

So as we can see .... they didnt do "a cheaper" option and a normal iPhone... the trick is that they will now sell us a plastic for the price of the normal iphone from last year and a more expensive one....

Can someone compare the O2 prices the days that iPhone 4s came out and iPhone 5?? What is the difference?

I remember getting my 4S the first day with Three, 500Min..... 1Gb... and 49Pounds only with 2yearCont.

The link is still working. Here's the main bit on prices (16GB only):

iPhone 5s 16GB

Unlimited texts, unlimited minutes & 1GB 3G data: £37 a month with a £119.99 upfront cost

Unlimited texts, unlimited minutes & 5GB 4G data: £47 a month with a £119.99 upfront cost

iPhone 5c 16GB

Unlimited texts, 600 minutes & 750MB 3G data: £32 a month with a £49.99 upfront cost

Unlimited texts, unlimited minutes & 5GB 4G data: £42 a month with a £99.99 upfront cost

VAT wouldn't be an issue as I'd just have it in my pocket as my normal phone, so how would they know...

Ah, I didn't realise breaking the law by tax evasion was actually okay if you don't get caught.

call it tax minimisation then, rich people & big business get away with it by calling it that and so why shouldn't 'we'. nothing wrong with what he's suggesting at all, even if it is technically in breach of tax rules...

Hey fellas,

I've got a 1 month old iPhone 5 locked to EE and looking to sell to fund for a 5s.

Where's the best place I can sell it?

I was thinking eBay but they have. 10% sellers fee don't they?

I'd be very happy if I could get £320 or so for it.

Still got 2 month warranty (as it was a replacement) and not a scratch.

EE will take it in part -ex and you pay a set fee to upgrade, cost will depend on
Your tariff.

So anyone planning to buy from Apple Stores in Central London?

Just went to the Covent Garden store and the staff said expect chaos and they had no idea if in-store pickup would be available for online orders. Can anyone else ask an Apple Store?

I'm working and don't have the luxury of taking the day off so I'm just going to try my luck online. If I do t manage to get it ordered on launch day ill just have to keep trying my luck.

It'll probably be worth your while getting it unlocked first before selling...

Not sure if this has been mentioned earlier in this thread....
But if you check out 3 they are bringing 4G for FREE with all tariffs from December. Also roaming in certain countries will now be part of your allowance!
I'm
Paying £18 on a 30 day rolling plan... Sell my 5 for £400 and buy a 5S for £709. If you get a low tariff pop a bit of money into a savings account each month, then your not tied into a 24 month contract @ £45 per month!

Also, buying an iPhone from ape is better than getting it from another company, as they just fob you off when you have a problem, apple don't.

It's a fairly random selection of countries though but a positive move, hopefully it will be extended: Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Republic of Ireland and Sweden

Also you can take a faulty iPhone back to Apple regardless of where you buy it from.

Yeah i know, just in time for my trip to Oz at christmas!

Yeah, i'm aware of that too, but i'd guess that at times depending on certain issues they bat you back to each other..... Signal issues at a guess... You also get a 2 year warranty if you buy from the apple store, I dont think you get that through a carrier. I could be wrong on that one tho.

Where will you be selling your iPhone?

The problem with 3 is that people in my building don't get reception when in do and we sit right next to each other ...

cheers for that but I can't unlock as I bought it new from a orange customer.

I can't wait to get off O2 and away from their data rates. With 3 around, how can they justify £6 for 1GB?
Not sure the best way to get the 5S at the moment, considering I want to use it on 3, but with a month left on O2.
