EE have just told me that they sell all their phones unlocked.
However when you insert a sim, the phone will then lock to that carrier - even if I put a Vodafone sim in, the phone would then lock to Vodafone.

Is that correct?

Who then would be responsible for unlocking the phone? EE suggested it would be Apple.

Contract phones? EE staff don't know anything, don't put stock in what they say.

Apple can in theory unlock the phone, but probably won't. The original network would have to do the unlock themselves. EE also charge just over £20 for the privilege, assuming you are 6 months into your contract and fully up to date with your monthly payments.

EE are ****.

Well, I asked two different people and they both said the same, so I have risked buying an EE model and gonna try my Tesco sim.

Tesco should then in theory unlock it straight away as I've been with them for ages.

Hey guys,

I'm planning of getting an iphone 6. Is Apple online store UK shipping from China or are they from December shipping from the UK?

It's that I want a phone with MLC nand and not with poor quality TLC inside it :)

They're all made in China. They will have them in stock but all will have came from China.

EE should be responsible for unlocking the handset. They will have the IMEI registered.

I had this issue awhile back. I bought a handset from Carphone Warehouse, full price, and it got locked to EE after inserting sim.

They refused to take responsibility for it and Apple claimed they could not unlock it. I instantly lost hundreds on the handset. It was an iPhone 5.

Nobody seems to take this on board and often don't explain the reality of when you buy a phone.

If the handset is on contract though, the network will unlock it for you but there might be a 3 month wait.

Yeah if you want to pay twice the current price for the privilege!? I'm afraid we are already balancing procareously on the quality vs cost line. Things won't get any better in future I feel.

It will soon be cheaper to make things in the USA than China.

You don't think Apple moved Mac Pro production to the U.S. for moral reasons do you? It's cheaper to make it in the USA.

EE are responsible.

EE also hire useless idiots who don't know **** and will fob of the problem to Apple so they could move onto the next customer that'll make them commission.

Turns out EE did lie - the phone doesn't lock to the first sim at all.

I tried to get a sim from them in store but they wanted to charge £5 (PAYG) as I would need this to unlock the phone.

However, after arguing with them (and them shirking their customer service team lies), they said if I had an unlock code then I could pop in store and use one of their store sims to unlock the phone.

Out of interest:

1) Can any one give me a quick run down of the unlock procedure?

2) Can any one recommend any websites I could use if EE won't let me (non-contract holder) unlock the phone?

If you bought it from a carrier phone, it will be locked to that carrier. It will lock to the first SIM temporarily, until you connect it to iTunes and it gets the new lock status. This is because the lock isn't applied until the phone is registered on the sale, and this is often done in batches on the backend, so until this has been done, your phone doesn't know what it is and defaults to "first sim" mode.

If you buy from anywhere other than Apple or a carrier, it will always be "locked to first sim" mode.

EE's unlocking page is here. http://ee.co.uk/help/getting-started/joining-ee/unlocking-your-phone

It depends on your service type (PAYG is £20), contract they will only unlock the original handset.

Considering swapping my iPhone 6 for the 6 Plus.
None of my (somewhat) local Apple stores currently have any of the model I'd in stock. :(

Will be going to Buchanan Street store on Tuesday to visit the Genuis Bar - so will check the 6 Plus out there (haven't handled one yet) and if I decide I'd like one, then I'll see what stock levels are there and in Edinburgh and try and pick one up.

If not will just need to order online and wait haha.

Am I right in saying that if I take the iPhone out of the box and a few days later I decide the phone is too big for me, I can take it back for a full refund? (should no damage come to the phone etc.)

Yes, you can just return it for a full refund. I had the 6 for a week then took it back.. Got a plus but only 16gb. Tried that for a week before stopping for a 128gb. No problems. Didn't even ask why.

Thanks!

I'll have a play with a Plus in store before I decide to buy - but it's always good knowing I can return it if I decide I prefer the 6 once I've had a more thorough use of it at home. :D

I ordered a 6 Plus on Boxing Day but cancelled today.

Worried about the lack of RAM and resolution being only 1080p, both of which really shouldn't be an issue nowadays, as well as the size which I thought might bug me. I will wait for the next crop of Android phones but it'll be interesting to see what happens next September. Sticking with my N5 for now.

Unbelievable. You really shouldn't buy these on paper specifications. Worried about the RAM and resolution? You plonker.

I do think size is a weird one. I don't think you can appreciate how small and usable the 6+ is by seeing it in the shop. When I got mine at first I was like oh **** what have I done it is huge. Now three months in, I do anything that a woman can do in a tampax advert activity wise and don't really notice it. When I upgraded my daughters 4 and 5 I was more like oh dear these are tiny toys.
