It should be available to pre-order on the Carphone Warehouse website later today - although from the press office people I spoke to they said they'll have lots of every model available on launch day - won't be anywhere near as bad as the shortages last time.

That was from the press office though, so take that with a pinch of salt.

It won't be anywhere near as bad because nobody will buy one with an 87% price increase!

I'm swinging towards the PAYG option here. Think that way Ill pay more now but at least I won't have this sh*t again in 12 months time. Will be cheaper in the long run if I do want to upgrade again next year.

Just hope O2 don't get stupid(er) and start refusing to sell iPhones on PAYG if stock is limited. They have done that before now.

After a few calculations(and coming to my senses), ive decided that im going with the PAYG option. I took the early upgrade option last July on my contract as O2 showed loyalty to their current customers. This year they are not showing loyalty to their current customers(fair enough), so I wont be showing any either. Once my contract comes to an end in December, I will be just sticking with my PAYG sim....These long term contracts were starting to annoy me anyway:mad:

Also I feel that for next years iPhone, O2 wont be the only provider...So i will be contract fee and free to choose

O2 are going to lose a lot of contract customers because of their greed - and serves them right. Your right PAYG is now much more attractive.

Certainly looks like iPhone 3GS model is going to have to pass me by - but then again the 'real' upgrade will be in June/July 2010 - at which point Apple has hopefully told O2 to get lost, and all the other carriers for that matter - and just sell the phone to whoever wants it.

I've set up a blog to register my disgust with O2's behaviour:
o2iphone.blogspot.com

If you buy PAYG and then get SIM only contract (or use your exisiting one) you're giving O2 its money back faster. They earn interest on it instead of you!

Depends how much you hate them :p

Not really. I am buying mine from CPW, or Apple direct, depending on who has it first. I can't imagine as much goes to O2 that way as if you are buying it direct from them.

Upgrade from 2G to 3GS

Has anyone else been told by O2 customer services that they cannot upgrade from their original iPhone 2G to the 3GS without having to pay off the remaining contract. My 18 month contract expires in September and I was hoping that as the original iPhone was not subsidised by O2 we would be in a position to upgrade (and extend our contracts) without having to buy ourselves out of contract.

Anyone else been told this?

Only if you buy it from Apple direct do you not give money back to O2/CPW. Otherwise they've already paid Apple the £500/whatever and on contract you pay them back slowly over time.

It's a silly point but find accounting jokes funny you'll laugh, or make some kind of movement of the face.

For all the messages being posted about upgrading, i dont think i have saw any like yours. Considering people were offered early upgrades last year for the 3G, then by rights, O2 should offer you the early upgrade now from your original as you paid for that in full. I dont see why they wouldnt but who knows these days. Why dont you ask on the O2 twitter page?

That does suck.

The reason O2 has been (rightly) giving for making early upgraders pay their contact in full is because the 3G was subsidised. Yet they say the reason you could update from the 2G to the 3G without penalty was because the phone wasn't subsidised.

It doesn't make sense?

Apparently the 2G to 3G upgrade was a "special promotion" and as I didnt take them up on their offer at the time im not able to now. The person I spoke to wasnt particularly helpful, maybe I'll try my luck with someone else.

Yeah they did say that at the time. I think it was something like a two month window where you could upgrade.

Even so, does seem a bit mean in view of your situation.

im in the exact same situation, contract runs out in september and i cant upgrade my 2g now. Unfortunately my 2g has broken and im still playing with the idea of whether or not to get it fixed (i would have to pay). O2 said they wouldnt fix it because i didnt have the insurance. Which is fair enough. But im annoyed that im now paying for an iphone contract for a phone that sits on my desk doing nothing. I have the sim card in a sony ericsson that has no decent internet to speak of. I wish i had upgraded to the 3g with the special promotion. Then my contract would be expiring nearer the release of the next generation. Oh well looks like i have to put up with it till august. Id just like to be able to use an iphone again.

You have a warranty for the length of the contract though? What's exactly wrong with it?

The warranty is only a year long apparently. The screen displays as normal but the bottom part of the touch screen doesn't work. So id be able to see i had received a text message but would have no way of replying to it.

Whoever told you that was wrong. I used to work in an o2 store - and legally they have to provide a warranty for as long as you have the contract with them. They might argue otherwise, but trust me kick up a small fuss and they're relent.

Really thats interesting. The o2 store i went to is useless might take it to a different one seeing as the store i originally purchased it in has closed.

Even if its fixed for just 2 months till i upgrade i know my brother will be delighted to have it.

Thanks very much. I'll get down to an O2 store as soon as possible. :)

Give them a call. The guys in the call centre tend to know a lot more, and have more power to actually do things about it!

One option

I have a 3g Iphone with 6months to go of contract, but my wife is using my original iphone on her (non iphone) o2 £35 contract having given her free Samsung to our daughter. This contract is ended in a months time.
If we were to get an upgrade to the most expensive free phone and sell it and the original iphone we could raisethe best part of a PAYG iphone 3Gs. Yes she will be in a new 18 month contract, but my 3g iphone contract will end in January and leave me free to get the new, new iphone 4Gti next year.

Complicated, i know, but sounds like a plan.

Probably because O2 dont know whats going on themselves. Everyone I have spoken to gives me a different answer. Not that I care. Even if it was a £100 - walk out with a new contract I wouldnt get it, lol :) Its shocking if you cant get the deal that 3G early adopters got, there is no good reason for that at all.

Spoken to both O2 and the CarphoneWarehouse, both gave the same reply that it doesnt matter that the orginal iPhone wasnt subsidised they wont let customers upgrade early - I missed the boat.

Is anyone going to be getting the 3GS next Friday?!
