Huh, literally every time but the time I called to cancel I had to wait 10 minutes in a queue :(

But on the bright side you can get awesome 30 day rolling contracts now. I only know 2 people who're using an iPhone with the iPhone contract, the rest bought PAYGs and use simplicity plans. I don't ever want to go on a fixed term contract again.

That is kind of what I did, but since my company phone was on O2 I just bought a PAYG, and then stuck my company card in after I got them to get me a new 3g one, as mine was over 10 years old and still said cellnet :)

Is it just me, or cant we just put our 3g sim in the new 3gs phone? Spoke to o2 and they said it will work fine.

That way we can just continue on our current 18month contract in the new phone?

Someone tell me if im missing something, cz that seems waaaaaay too obvious to me....?

Thanks

Yes that's correct - I don't think anybody's missing anything, it's more the case that you'll need to shell out £440 minimum for a 16G 3GS.

so if im on contract, all i have to do is buy the new handset, and pop my 3g sim in to it, and im good to go? rite?

Im now wondering wether just to shell out that bit extra on a pay as you go phone, put in my contract sim, which will be up in Jan 2010. Then when NEXT summe rolls around, im free to take up whatever deals they offer without worrying but as this will be a yearly problem, that only helps for 2010 not 2011..maybe i will be sick of iphone by then?

Its so confusing, what to do, how to do it AAARRGHHHH

"it's more the case that you'll need to shell out £440 minimum for a 16G 3GS."

is the £440 for payg?

You can't buy a pay-monthly phone without signing up for a new contract (18-month minimum).

dont you sort all of the tariff stuff out on itunes, once you get the phone and are activating it, rather than when purchasing? or does it have to be done when pre ordering/ordering the phone?

Not when I bought my 3G no. The price for pay-monthly phones is lower as the contract is subsidising the cost. So you can't get the lower cost without the contract.

****... i thought my idea was too good to be tru! lol

Yes, but that's the only way you'll be able to get the 3GS and "just pop your current SIM in". If you buy a contract 3GS then you will be starting up a new contract, so if you are still in contract already then you will end up with two contracts (unless you buy out your current contract and upgrade).

For example my position is that I bought the iPhone 3G 16GB last July on the £35 tariff and have 6 months left on my 18 month contract and my options for getting the iPhone 3GS 16GB are:

  • Get onto lowest iPhone tariff (£29.36), buy out remaining contract and then upgrade to 3GS on new contract (6monthsx£29.36 = £176.16 + £184.98 = £361.14). This may be subject to reduction if you spend more than £50 / month (O2 Priority List offers allow early upgrades for high enough monthly spending customers).
  • Buy iPhone 3GS 16GB PAYG (£440.40) and use my current SIM in that and then I can either put the PAYG SIM in my 3G iPhone and give to friend/family or sell the 3G to offset the cost of the iPhone 3GS. In January when my original 18 month contract ends I can then either let it continue on a monthly basis or switch to something like Simplicity for £20/month for the equivalent benefits (less visual voicemail).
Hope that clarifies things a bit.

In any case I'm going to hold on and hope that O2/Apple come to their senses and see quite how ridiculous their 3GS pricing is (and I'm not even talking about the upgrade from 3G situation here). My dad is currently after a new phone so he may want my 3G if I were to get the 3GS on PAYG or buyout & upgrade.

That's how it worked for the original iPhone (you just bought the iPhone and took it hope to activate which is when the contract was started), but with the 3G they changed that and in some cases insisted on activating it in store with you, or at the very least made you sign up to a new contract and left the activating to you (but in either case you would have ended up with starting a new 18 month contract). The 3GS will be exactly the same as the 3G in this regard I'm sure.

It's still just about cheaper to buyout & upgrade than get it on PAYG (at least for those with just 6 months to go), but depending on your usage and how far into your contract you are it may be cheaper in the long run to go the PAYG route and downgrade to simplicity after your contract ends.

Now what we really want to know is the price of a phone without PAYG sim card, ie without the years worth of data plan.

I'm swinging towards the PAYG option here. Think that way Ill pay more now but at least I won't have this sh*t again in 12 months time. Will be cheaper in the long run if I do want to upgrade again next year.

Just hope O2 don't get stupid(er) and start refusing to sell iPhones on PAYG if stock is limited. They have done that before now.

O2 Twitter has just replied to someone & said pre orders wont be available.

I dont know any other way to take that!

Interesting!

O2 Priority List upgrade benefits are subject to the following Terms and Conditions:

* Silver customers are eligible for one month early upgrade, Gold customers are eligible for three months early upgrade, and Platinum customers are eligible for six months early upgrade

I'm on silver, at 35ppm tariff, that is 12 months in.

Do you think they will let us upgrade our tariff to platinum now and then let us upgrade to the 3Gs straight away ?

Just called and asked....and the answer is no. apparently, platinum customers are picked at random, and not everyone who spends over £80 a month is automatically put on the list.

I just phoned the O2 iPhone dept to ask why there isnt pre ordering this time, seriously wondered wether she even wanted to talk to me, i couldnt get a proper response, finally managed to get the info that I would have to go to a shop on the day of release!!!

Seems totally backward to me. I hate going to shops, i prefer online ordering for most things.

I have spoken to 4 O2 reps today & only one of them was helpful

I do sympathise with you guys that are desperate to upgrade but from where I'm sitting I see no reason to get rid of my 3G, I was pleased at yesterdays announcement, it's just a slight upgrade, the real follow up will hopefully be next year, I'll sit tight with OS 3.0 and wait, I won't even upgrade in December when I'm eligible. Maybe it's just me but I don't think the 3G is slow at all and I'm not bothered about the camera.

On the other hand I could kill O2 for the pricing they've put on tethering.

Has anybody asked O2 how MMS will work, is it one MMS equals two SMS?
