Hey guys! I'm torn on size and feel like I can pull both off. 38 is lighter and cheaper, but the 42mm screen is much better to interact with in person. Which one would you recommend? Thanks, and apologies for the dirty mirror

you can pull off either, but I like the 42.

I was going to wait until the second gen to get the SS version, but I liked my 38mm sport so much I decided to upgrade to the 38mm SS. Yeah yeah, I know, "way too small."

This is a good example of how much better it is to see how the watches look when the "big picture" is viewed and not just a wrist. I quite often prefer 42 mm, but this looks good on you and not too small IMO.

Tough call, both work, but you do pull the 42 off with room to spare. What's your wrist size?

Circumference 165mm, width 55m. One thing going for the 42mm is that I am in LOVE with the leather loop. Looks classy, is extremely comfortable to wear and lightweight. It's my favorite Apple watch band by far.

Wow, no kidding! I think I'm about 167 and was concerned about the 42 being too big. I think yours is the first set of pictures where the watch doesn't look way bigger than it does in real life.

I am now convinced, like the OP described, that the wrist width plays a bigger role on perceived size than circumference. The circumference is more helpful for picking out band sizes (you'd want to get the S/M versions if you're about the same size as me)

Thank you! I think I'll go with the 42 for $50 plus a few more (agonizing) days of waiting. The 38 isn't tiny by any means and probably gives a much more understated look, but the leather loop and additional screen real estate swayed me towards the 42.

No question in my opinion. 42mm is a better fit on you.
The 38mm (specialy the milanese loop) really look small on you.

What a great guide, thank you so much for making it! :)

I will probably break down and get one this summer, and I've been going back and forth on size until I read this. I'm a B, with 50-yr-old eyes and a love for good battery life! :p

42 looks better on you!

Welp, I went for my 4th try-on last night and I'm now convinced that the 42 is the right one for me. The 38 on my wrist just looks too small and the 42 is kind of in the sweet spot. Large, but not honking huge. I was surprised because I always felt I had slender wrists (about 167mm around, and in the low 50's in width).

The Apple store employee felt the 42 was right for me too, and this lovely middle-aged black lady came over and chimed in. She even stepped back a few feet to take a farther-away view and liked the 42 more. She also tossed in this advice "If I was your wife or girlfriend, I'd tell you to go with this band" pointing at the Classic Buckle, which was my favorite of the bunch, anyway. I think I'll still want the blue leather loop for more casual times and probably the Milanese for really formal occasions. Maybe, maybe, the white sports band for hiking/working out.

Thanks for everybody's input. My only issue now is how to get one of these in my hands!

I think both look good on you. The one with the Milanese Loop caught my eye as looking particularly good. I have the 38 and am a senior citizen and have no problem at all with seeing or reading anything on the watch. I had the 42 for a while and was hesitant to switch for that reason but battery life and ease of use are about the same for the two sizes.

Good to see a senior into the latest tech gadgets! Now senior, does that mean 65 plus?

Up here in upstate NY you can live in a lot of the senior place starting at 55. I'm 52, so not quite there yet! By the the way, I am also enjoying my 38mm!

Very seldom do I like the looks of the 42 on these peoples wrist but this guy is an exception for me, he can definitely pull of the 42.

Thank you! I decided to go with the 42mm and ordered the SS Milanese Loop. Between the Milanese, a black leather loop and a black sport band, I'm going to be a very happy camper come June :)

Yep, I am in my mid 60s!! (YIKES!) Still working full time though. I am very lucky that I have kept up with technology and like to have the latest Apple innovation. 60 is the new 40 .. haven't you heard! :p

Good for you!
I've always loved computers and anything related to technology. I'm in my 60s too (can't wait for Medicare :p). I retired when I was 54 so I've had a lot of time for (technology) "toys" :D
I really like my 38 mm Sports Gray Apple Watch and, now, don't know what I did without it. But, I say the same thing about my iPhone, iPad iMac . . . and the list goes on ;)

Another >60 here ... I still can't quite get used to calling myself a "senior" - helps when getting the sr. discount at the movies though :) I work FT in tech support, and love gadgets.

I got used to being a senior while still in my fifties :p
I, too, love the senior discount thing. The thing I find irritating about a lot of seniors, though, is their sedentary lifestyle. I don't see this stage of life as a wind down but more of a rev it up and step it up a notch stage :p
I can tell that you probably like your job . . . a lot :)

In almost all cases 38 mm looks better.

Imo, 38 is hands down the best option regardless of wrist size.

That's fact, I express opinion.

Everyone here asking 'which looks better?' would get the 38 mm answer from me.

If I only look at the watch without a wrist, the 42mm is for sure the one which looks better.
One very important point: bigger height/with of the watch with the same thickness makes the watch thinner.

See to me the 38mm is more impressive because its the same technology all squeezed into an even more compact package.

I get what you're saying about the thickness ratio though, and I thought the thickness would bother me (on both sizes) judging by the press photos, but its really turned out to be a non issue for me in actual use.

Yes photos on apple website show the watch much thicker. For me its not really important to get thinner.
The thickness is ok for a watch. Maybe in some years 1 or max 2mm thinner but not more.
I know what you mean with the little size with same technology and you are right. But compared to all other smartwatches even the 42 has a small body what is very cool. The two day battery life of the 42mm is very nice. Today i endes with 70%. Switched it to power reserve over night and it will last for the day tomorrow too, what is very cool, as I am on a vacation right now and in our hotel romm are only three free power plugs #
Not enough for two iphones one ipad and one watch #
