ok i just want to say this before i hit the sheets. I want everyone to look at their iphones and see if you can see your sensors on the top of the phone. (look good!!!) Is it possible that u can't see the camera also. Those commercials they shot in HI, LA, and NYC have to be to illustrate the capability of video calling around the nation. i see apple breaking the news of video capability in early july. I'm probably wrong, but this is a forum. goodnite

Let it go guys. It's not going to happen. There has been no evidence at all to support a front camera at all, no rumors, nothing beyond pure over the top speculation generated on the Internet. This feature is in the same category as the Mac Tablet, PowerBook G5, and unicorns.

Here are my theories:

1. There is no front-facing camera.

2. There was a front-facing camera and the people who had hands-on time didn't notice it. (because it didnt have the white circle around it like the back camera)

3. There is a front-facing camera, but the model that was demo'ed at the conference didnt have one to keep it a secret until Apple can properly announce it right before launch.

4. The iPhone leaked photo we saw was an earlier prototype version. It's not hard to believe that there are probably a dozon of earlier incarnations of the 3G iPhone before Steve Jobs finally thought it was perfect. The front-facing camera was on an earlier proto-type and then removed for the final release.

I saw a unicorn running down I-85 South this morning! so.... its possible!

I am hoping we see a new get together with Apple like on March 6th to cover the launch. At the launch they will of course cover the current 3G phone and unveil a new 3G phone with front camera and 32Gb for 499. I would buy it in a second. That folks, I believe is the only hope we have. I don't see Apple making fake iPhones just to hide the camera on the display models that everyone played with.

I feel so let down that we don't have iChat with camera. I don't know why since nothing was official, but between the patents and the killer mock-ups of the "leaked" iPhone the iChat was a must for me.

If they don't I was able to pick-up the last 16Gb iPhone from my local AT&T store. They were harsh about selling it to me, but I played the game of I broke my other one so the guy gave me a break.

I would love for this to be the case .. but I'm not betting anything on it. I will still upgrade on July 11th either way. The extra stuff would be icing on the cake ..

These things, however unlikely, would be great.

I just want to mention that it is easy to always wish there was more. I just read the Engadget hands on article, and the last paragraph is what caught my attention above all else.

"It looks like they took an amazing device and made it significantly better. If the battery life is as good as they claim, we think this will steamroll the competition in the enterprise space. And even if it doesn't, at $199 it's going to be extremely hard for people to resist"

I just think that we sometimes get a little carried away with wanting things, and then hating a company for not giving them. I know there are certain missing features that should have never been missing, but they are. We can continue to gripe about it, or we can quietly hope Apple releases them in the future and enjoy what is good about the device now.

Apple is a slow to release company. They aren't the type to drop all of their major eggs into one basket. Just because there was no video recording, MMS, cut/paste, etc; today, doesn't mean it will never come. If they refuse to do it themselves, there is always the possibility of 3rd party solutions as well.

I also know this thread was about the camera above all else, and I am ranting off in a new direction, so I do apologize for that....

I like this thread, It's nice to see one that is full of hope instead of a bunch of us bitching and moaning over everything... (and yes i said us.. I do it too!)

I've been thinking the same thing. I wonder if there's anyone at WWDC that would actually look close in good light, etc.

Those cases, etc. were real IMO. And so much chatter on it. I'm holding out hope. Oh - and the patents! Are they really going to wait a year before it's unleashed?

one thing I think we can all agree on is that, even if it isn't a second camera, we will see a few more really exciting features before the 11th rolls around.. I for one am really excited!

Well, I was the one that had a Genius point to the upper right hand corner of the iPhone and say "that's where the front camera for video iChat will go!" He stood right beside me as I watched the Keynote. No one else was around us as we blasted the Keynote over the Mac Pro w/30" Apple Cinema Display and Bose Sound System. We had this one Genius come over and turn the volume down, (kinda' rude on his part, I guess the "noise" as he called it, was interfering with his "sale," I mean the MBA pretty much sells itself and I think a curious monkey can sell at least 10 a day! LOL). Anyway, when the Keynote was over I looked at him and said "maybe next year?" and he replied "maybe sooner than we think!" He was pretty adamant about the front camera and we were the only two persons within whispering distance. I say the front camera is a go, and video iChat is a shoe-in NLT July 11th, 2008! IMHO. "Bring It!" I'm not backing down on this, if I go to my grave before I see a front camera/video iChat, then so be it! :p

I think that had more to do with the fact that he didn't want the crowd to react to a non-upgraded 2MP camera. Apple.com lists the iPhone as a 2MP camera. Gizmodo took some photos and didn't see any improvement in the camera.

It's a CELLPHONE. Plenty of other companies are still making phones with 1.3MP camera. Of all the things to nitpick, why the camera? It's not like Apple has any Cybershot-esque branding going on.

As the one who began this speculation, let me say that in no way am I creating this hype because I'm disappointed with what Apple's offering. The only thing I was disappointed about is the one month wait, but I can assure you, front-facing camera or not, I'll be one of the first people to pick one up in early July.

It just occurred to me that everything about those leaked case specs seemed to be accurate with the exception of a third sensor. Maybe there never was a third sensor. Maybe they removed it halfway through the design. Maybe they didn't put it in the display models they had today (it's not like it'd be hard to build 10 phones without the front-facing camera and comment out the code for it for the display models). Who knows?

I'm optimistic as much as the next guy, but I'm also realistic in thinking it might just be a pipe dream. It sure would be cool though.

"Geniuses" don't know what they're talking about with unannounced products any more than the average consumer. Store managers didn't even know a thing about the new iPhone until today. Retail employees get NO inside info. He's probably just some guy who reads these rumor sites too. A lot of people on here were convinced there'd be a video-conferencing camera, he could have been one of them.

That is a great theory. and it makes sense. i hope its true. how long do you think it would take apple to edit the ad since they were shot a few weeks ago. might point to an announcement date.

just one last thing to add to this speculation, but did anyone else feel like the iphone part of the keynote was a bit rushed? I mean apple has to know how much hype surrounded this phone since even before the last one was released.. and it kind of took a back seat to everything today. Maybe this calls for a more grander something or other later on? just more speculation

Its the "One More Thing"

The reason it was not mentioned was because Apple was still working on several technical issues related to the video conferencing hand-over. The LA/NYC commercials were to introduce the Loopt feature and combine it with the Video Conference feature. The Video Conference feature was supposed to be WWDC 2008's "One more thing..." but it will have to wait until just before launch.

Not long at all.
The one they aired today was shot 10 days ago.

how do you know that?

They shut down the 5th Avenue Store to film a commercial and onlookers claimed to have seen two men in suits and dark glasses with earpieces in..."secret service" types, if you will.

Matches the description of the ad we saw today pretty well I think.
